Taking care of my father when he got a cancer diagnosis of a few months was so hard to watch but was the greatest gift. Being able to be there for him and spend that time was priceless. Yes I had to leave my husband and kids and go states aways but it was worth every second. My mother died suddenly right before my fathers diagnosis so he was alone. Even though my brother lived next door he was too bothered to help him and "had a family". Smh. Like I didnt? It was shameful but I'm the one that recieved the gift of taking care of him and spending that special time. But I have to say even though it was priceless time i got to spend with him I dont know whats worse seeing you parent suffer or them dying suddenly like my mother. I wish I could have spoke with her and been there to hold her. So sadly I've seen it both ways.

My grandma taught me you shouldn’t really expect men to have a caregiving impulse. If they do, fine, but if not don’t hold it against them. You’re wasting your time and energy. I’ve always observed it to be true, like most things she taught me. I’m pretty sure I thought it was nonsense when she taught me. Also true of most of what she taught me.

Me either! I don't have any living grandparents or parents anymore and I am only 28... Oh what I would do to have them back even for just 1 day! My grandma on my mom's side lived to be 95 and all my life I went to spend the night with her and just hang out with her and I loved every minute of it! She told me all kinds of stories about every stage of her life and we played Yahtzee and she was an amazing southern cook! I would have never dreamed of thinking she was a burden!

My first job as a nurse aide was in 1988. We were advised to bring dementia patients "back to reality." In truth, doing so was cruel. These people were never going to get better. Fred Astaire's character had it right. His roommate was happy believing he was on his farm. He should be allowed to keep doing so. Thankfully, the standard of care for dementia patients later involved dealing with them within the framework of their reality. I can't imagine treating elderly people like idiot children the way Mike's parents were treated. However, that's the way it used to be done. The father probably would have complied with treatment better if he'd been allowed to do things he enjoyed with modifications rather than being told he couldn't do them at all. Sometimes people need to be moved to long-term care. Those folks shouldn't have been forced to move from their home. They just needed a little help. The movie does bring up a good point. The help needed is often difficult to afford. It shouldn't be that way. People like Mike's parents would benefit from a welfare check, a little help around the house, and help with transportation so they could continue living independently.
