On the question should you release videos randomly or on a schedule. When someone's video notifications stop showing up in my feed; I'll search them out if I expect them. If they come out whenever - I'll assume that they haven't been made and won't think about them. Monday evening sounds good.

Thank you for the video, Vera! And I love the Fifteenth Doctor's new cosplay! About being experimental: I do not necessarily expect entire episodes, but, at the concept/idea level, I am totally for it. The experimental episodes work better when they are rare, unique and outliers. About being whimsical: YES! I want dumb but fun episodes! Doctor Who definitely should have serious and dark moments, but it should not forget about being fun and entertaining. About being dark: as Vera mentioned in some videos about the Chris Chibnall's era, one of the big problems with the Thirteenth Doctor's run is the unquestioned cruelty. Even if the Doctor is incapable, they still must try to save everybody. Yes, sometimes, people will die and the Doctor will fail, but they must try to be kind. One of the reasons why I love so much the episodes "The Empty Child"/"The Doctor Dances" is Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor being able to say at the end: "Everybody lives, Rose! Just this once - everybody lives!". That is Who the Doctor must aim to be.

If there was a decent gap between RTD to Chibnall and RTD's latest run, I might feel different about it. There isn't though, this is a straight continuation and it would be the same without any Disney involvement. So for myself it will still be classic ('63 to movie) and modern (RTD to Chibnall and beyond). Not sure what I'll do about the season numbering though. I'm not a fan of calling it season 1 (again) for the reason I stated but as that's what it's officially called, and what most will be using, I will likely go along with it. Otherwise it will just get confusing.

the best episode to show what you meant about the doctor being around gives hope that everything is going to be ok is "The Doctor Dances"....in the first part "The Empty Child" there was an air of doom that every was turning into a half human have thing melded with a gas mask and a one track mind of trying to find their mommy.....at the end the Doctor turned on the light of hope by doing what they always do, use things around them to find the solution, in the case of "The Doctor Dances" they upgraded the nanites with the proper human template and cured everyone, "For just this once, Rose, EVERYBODY LIVES!"

Not just the line, but Eccleston's perfect delivery. Because, after SO many adventures where someone died, this time, just once, he saved everyone involved in this incident. Including some who were basically already dead when he arrived. Not just in the revived series, but all the way back to the earliest stories in classic Who. Okay, this was the genesis of Moffat's odd tradition of negative death tolls in stories, but this time is still an awesome moment.

Big swings, sense of whimsy, gets dark but doesn't circumb to darkness - you're basically hopping for a Rob Shearman season. And in fact, I won't be too surprised if RTD would adapt another one of Shearman's audio plays, like he did with Jubilee.

The biggest crime that Chibnall did, in my humblest of opinions, was turning every Time Lord into Cybermen. It did add some interesting tension having them being able to regenerate, but it's the same problem I had with Gallifrey being destroyed in the Time War. While I made peace with that (and with Moffat bringing it back by Deus ex Machina because he hates it when anybody dies), I think The Doctor needs them as a foil. If we could retcon that somehow, or fix it, I'd be a happy nerd. Happy Free Comic Book Day, everybody! I hope you all went out and supported your LCS!

I like what you say on the darkness in the show. For me, the darkest place they went to was Midnight (no pun intended) because of how the episode ended, when Donna repeated what the doctor said and he fixes her with that serious stare and simply says "no, dont do that. Don't". If we can get one or two episodes that come close to Midnight, Blink, Dalek, The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, Silence In the Library/Forest of the Dead, Human Nature/Family of Blood I'll be impressed. Also agree with you on bringing back old enemies. I'm happy to go a coupla years without the Master, Daleks, Cybermen. Also agree on the doctor/companion relationship and their having this link of not knowing where they come from promising some solid emotional beats without the romance whilst also, for the doctors character, being the best way to move forward from the timeless child. Let's hope for some great scripts, performances, and who knows, maybe the start of another golden era of Doctor Who.

In spite of Chibnall's issues, I'd say that he did the best interpretation of the Daleks, the Cybermen, and the Master. A Dalek without its casing, hijacking a human to do its bidding. A partially converted Cyberman, gripping onto the last few remnants of his humanity (funnily enough this concept was previously done by Chibnall in the Torchwood episode Cyberwoman). An incarnation of the Master who embraces his evil acts because it's his whole reason for existing. It's brilliant.

Okay, maybe I’m a bad Doctor Who fan, but I started from the earliest episodes I could find streaming of classic Doctor Who, watched everything that was available, including Torchwood. Jodie Whittaker’s 13th Doctor and the Timeless Child were some of my favorite parts. Through smashing a bit of lore, they managed to open up a whole world of possibility to write about forgotten past lives that shaped The Doctor into Who they are today, and gave them an infinite horizon to explore. It’s like adding a window to a historic house. Potentially devastating if done wrong, but illuminating in new and beautiful ways if done with adequate care.

Slick cosplay! I don't mind waiting for a non-rushed review. I agree with your hope for things not to linger in darkness. This is a incarnation of the Doctor that's had time for therapy. Chatting about episode count, I think it's worth mentioning that Classic Who was 25min episodes with seasons with 24 or more episodes. I think it would be nice to have that sort of structure back. One, it encourages multi-episode stories, which I think are healthy for viewer retention and so on, and two, it means on a Saturday you can say, "What do I want to watch? Hm. Is there Doctor Who on today?" and be greeted with a Doctor Who episode more often. The amount of time between seasons can build hype, but it can also make people forget that DW is even on the air. You want casual viewers to be able to spend a good evening watching, which does of course mean that if there's a two- or three-parter, you need to be able to catch up somehow with parts 1 and 2 before you can watch 3. If Doctor Who runs from the end of April to the start of November, then thats going to be 28ish weeks or episodes. Then, you get a gap in the runup to Christmas and New Year's, with an episode over that period (maybe two!). You get the season send-off in November, then you get the boost of the Christmas Special where you can set up anything characterwise you want for the next season, or have the Doctor's regeneration either just have happened (we get a whirl with this new Doctor) or happen in the epidode (we get a swan song with this Doctor), and it keeps us going and gives us a pot of speculation to stir to our enjoyment til May rolls around.
@ThetaSigma-vu1sk

It's not possible to do that in today's age. For a yearly series with that amount of episodes, the cast and crew and would be constantly working. The writing quality would drop, the acting quality would drop because the actors would be overworked and bored to death of doing one project. The CGI and visual effects would be poorly edited and rushed because they'd have barely any time to get to get it done.

My hope is mainly the Doctor's characterization...which I'm of two minds about. On one hand, I want to get back to the palpable SORROW of the Doctor in the revival, that really added some much needed depth to him from the classic show and, I feel, was really a major part of what hooked the audience in the first place. On the other, it seems that part of this Doctor's theme is that he has finally "fixed" himself and thus should logically no longer suffer from that trauma, which means he (and future Docs) should be more like the classic Doctors...but I'm hoping they can do that, and STILL find ways to make them more dimensional than he often was back then. Television and viewers have come a long ways, and the straight-forwardly "HEROIC" figures of the past just don't quite cut it anymore...

My biggest hope is that RTD doesn't bite his tongue because a key part of the audience is 8 and it's going out on Disney+ in the US - I want more stuff like Turn Left. More stuff like the way the specials expressed the sentiment that as well as good humans have a great capacity for evil in The Giggle, or the throwaway line about hate travelling further than love in Wild Blue Yonder. Fully agree with your last one - That Doctor Who benefits from going dark, at least from time to time, but shouldn't linger in that darkness. The way I tend to think of it is that Doctor Who, no matter how dark it gets, should always retain a sense of _hope_ . If you've played - or read - Wanderhome, I think when Doctor Who goes dark it ideally should feel not too dissimilar from the way Wanderhome feels when you're playing up the darkness of that - You can play Wanderhome in this whimsical anthropomorphic animals helping out where they can as they pass through, sort of reminiscent of the sort of children's programming where the stakes are minimal - things like 'will the town be able to put on the fete' (and a lot of the AP videos of it were from preview copies right at the start of the pandemic where most of the people playing the game needed that sort of whimsical escape so a lot of coverage of the game focuses on that way of playing it)... Or you can play it with a lot of trauma as a group of homeless, anthropomorphic animals wander a world that just got out of a civil war and as such has a lot of trauma within the world and within the characters (I think most games probably fall in between those two tones) But when you play it in that second way? The game doesn't so much push against it - It explicitly supports it, there are a bunch of options in character creation that it signposts as being ideal for that second mode of play and not so good for the first mode of play - but it does push you towards playing that second option in a specific way - As being about _recovery_ from trauma, rather than _lingering_ in trauma. I'm not fussed about if you get reviews out on a fixed schedule or when you can get them done by, but if you do pick a fixed schedule for them? I'd rather you got them out on a fixed schedule that didn't require you to work on weekends. Even if that means they're out on Thursdays. If you pick a fixed day to put the reviews out, pick a day that means you're confident you'll have time to give them as much work they need to make them things you're happy about afterwards. But also... You probably need to compromise between that and algorithmic SEO nonsense.

To your point about not wanting Doctor Who to succumb to darkness; that's one reason why I already like Ncuti as the Doctor. In both episodes we've seen of him so far, he already brings that air of competence and safety. Like just being around him, you know everything is going to be ok. I look forward to seeing how he handles the darker episodes.

I can’t wait for the 2027 season of Doctor Who where we get 3 whole episodes this time. Each of these co-written my Russel t Davies, Steven Moffat and Marc Gatis. Can’t wait!

Great vid. Yeah, while I want story content and storylines to be different from his first era, I hope he keeps that same whimsy/tragedy balance. RTD excels with interpersonal drama, and people's emotions. My theory with 14 is defo not Valeyard haha. I think he has an extended chilled time with the nobles for a long time then eventually somehow dies then WOOOOSH he's just regeneration energy that goes weeeee back through time and 15 pops out of 14 at an earlier time than he's meant to. I think that because of 15's line about being fine/less burdened because 14 relaxes/stops, and 15 is technically after 14 fully, just Toymaker's machinations and the Doctor breaking the walls of reality (13th unable to stop the flux and 14th with the salt) means it all went weird.

I wish I had a cool lightsaber. Nice colour too! I'd love it if Mrs Flood interacts with a bit-part/cameo character played by Brian May. But that's just me being silly. Edit: I would focus on getting the episodes ready for monday. Monday isn't far enough from Saturday to miss the wave, but gives enough time for you to have a life and make the video good :)

Nice intro and good video. The things you talked about I agree like bringing in new villains will be great. As for schedule of the new episodes, I'm good either or, it just depends on your schedule. If you can get it out early great if not that is also fine. I will definitely be watching

You're gonna need a lot of costumes, I think... Dark Doctor Who has, indeed, given some of the best Doctor Who. For me the apex of that is... The Caves of Androzani. GEEZ, that one's lit well but it's DARK.

I love the concept and set up for the timeless child but the actual execution of it did NOT eat. 🤭 I would like to explore more of what the doctor was doing during past regenerations in a series thats set in the past rather than a present version of the doctor trying to remember the past

One of the darkest things people seem to forget about Torchwood is that it establishes that the canonically real afterlife in the Doctor Who universe is seemingly eternal consciousness, alone, in a state of sensory deprivation, with the feeling that something terrible is coming for you in the darkness. And people got mad at Moffat for "don't cremate me" lol.
@ThetaSigma-vu1sk

Torchwood is strange with the afterlife. Often, it does portray it as eternal darkness, but then with Random Shoes, it shows Eugene literally flying up to heaven. And there have been some contradictions to Torchwood's depressing depictions of death within Doctor Who itself. For example, in the TV movie, after Grace was killed and then resurrected by the TARDIS, she tells the Doctor that death is nothing to be afraid of. So what did she see when she died? And in series 2 of Torchwood, it is revealed that the thing in the darkness is Death, using the resurrection gauntlets. My theory is that you only face this afterlife if you have had a connection with the gauntlets, which is why they were thrown through the rift in the first place. So only the Torchwood team and anyone else who has come into contact with them would face this.

This is probably the best channel to ask this on, re: Issues of the Doctor's sexuality (which I'm a little surprised *didn't* really come up in the video). Now that the Doctor is finally being played by the first openly gay actor, how are we feeling about this being explored? If they DO build a romance between the Doc and Ruby, or better yet, another recurring character, would you be fine with him playing out a hetero relatioonship? Or would that make you feel uncomfortable, would you rather they portray the Doctor in a gay relationship? Or do you prefer they just go back to the classic standard, of him not having any urges at all, seemingly? Might that not come off as a bit cowardly, ie, "Oh, they let him get it on lots of times before, but now that a gay relationship is possible, *suddenly* he doesn't DO that sort of thing anymore??" I'd really like to know people's thoughts on this!

I don't really have as much of an opinion on this as you might assume because I emphatically don't want the Doctor getting romantic with anybody. I deeply do not care for any romantic leanings for the Doctor and never have. The only one I've given a pass to is River and that's because the logistics were interesting (even if the stories that fit into it didn't always work). If/when they go that direction (which I REALLY hope they never do) I'll actually have thoughts to share. But I don't want to go down the road of a hypothetical on something I don't want to happen at all.

@@CouncilofGeeks Fair enough There's speculation that the Regency episode might have a "Girl in the Fireplace" style romance with a historical nobleman, so I'll look forward to your thoughts on that, if true... I'll just add that, as I don't particularly mind the romance, I almost DO have the sort of reaction I described...only by race. If this were an American show, I would definitely find it sus that *suddenly* the Doctor is declared to have no romantic feelings as soon as that would make it interracial (yes, I'm STILL mad about what they did on Supergirl!😤)...but I'll give DW the benefit of the doubt that that's NOT why they're doing this here.

While I understand that the audience might want some romantic escapism I agree with Vera that the Doctor should not be involved in romantic relationships with his travelling companions. With the power dynamics involved it seems to me to be like someone taking a kid on a seaside trip then taking advantage of their admiration, or infatuation, to get a snog. Romantic complications between companions should still be on the table though, any flavour of that is fine by me.

The sexuality of the actor should be irrelevant to the sexuality of the character. Even if Ncuti Gatwa was straight, he could play a gay character, and vice versa.

Okay, so my farthing on new reviews for Season 1 of Ncuti Gatwa 's Doctor: I really appreciate your point of view, Vera, so for me, I am willing to wait for when you have something ready. I'm sure cases can be made for releasing on a particular day of the week or for getting a video out ASAP. However, for me... I appreciate your work, and I know that takes time as well as effort and brainpower. You do you. All the best.
