Going up against Jack Nicholson in a tense courthouse scene would have been jumped on by critics as a young pretender failing to dethrone a king if it went badly for Cruise, but he rose to the occasion, as he did a few years earlier with Rain Man.

Tom cruise had his best performance in Rain Man. And Dustin Hoffman. You cant tell me Rain Man is one if not THE most thought out, well directed film. By the end of Rain Man, as a viewer I felt emotionally connected to Charlie and His brother Raymond's relationship.
