I need to correct myself here; each Mk.II .303 MG had a belt of 300 rounds loaded, for a total of 2400 rounds. Even so, this was only about 15 seconds of firing at the more than 1000 (some sources give 1150) rounds per minute rate of the gun. Oh, and the conical flash eliminator was NOT on the Spitfire/Hurricane wing installation. It was found instead on early Bomber Command aircraft.

My grandad was a marksman machine gunner.. D Day to Berlin...never wore patches...mainly BREN..South West Borderer Rgt.(The Welsh regiment from Rourkes Drift) and he was a Lambeth/Londoner!!.vickers for suppression and BREN for huge accuracy. Many funny stories told but not the horror...He hated killing but you had to kill or be killed. I've fired the BREN on Vegas ranges (Sten and Lee Enfield rifle) Sten a bit of a pig 🐖..but the other two awesome to shoot. Thanks to that generation we have our lives.

He should know that a charger and a clip are not the same. With a clip, the entire contents have to be loaded. With a charger, the magazine can be topped up with as many rounds as will fit. That's why it's referred to as a charger. Also, the Lee Enfield range were well known for having probably the smoothest and fastest operating bolt action of any rifle of its type then in existence thus being able to retain a very high rate of fire.

Em although some people say the sten mk2 from November 1941. The smle and bren are really good personal or squad infantry weapons. There is a theory that a British army infantry squad had as much firepower as a German one. The mg42 being an area denial weapon rather than a squad lmg.

It isn`t a legend that the Bren was "too accurate". It has virtually no beaten zone , so the last round of a burst will follow the path of the first round. There was a skill at arms competition for gun teams which consisted of firing from 600yds with a belt of 50. When the targets fall, the gunner makes safe with the number two`s belt and the team run to the 500yds firing point and the process is repeated till those targets fall and the number two makes safe with the number one`s belt and so on to the one hundred yard point.Highest score in the shortest time wins. It is a test of weapons skill, fitness and shooting ability and we would practice for ages before a competition. We`d rock up with our GPMGs and the Gurkhas with Brens. We lost every time ! Bren (or L4 as it became) was much loved by Royal Marines because of it`s light weight compared to the GPMG, (18 pounds compared to 26) . Used on patrols in Ulster and ski patrols in arctic Norway where we wired a snow shoe to the bipod to stop it sinking in the snow. It`s so-called replacement, the Light Support Weapon variant of SA 80, was a bag of shite in comparison.

"Too accurate" to be a good area suppression weapon. Fine if you wanted to hit something you could see, rather than make a mob of the enemy to keep their heads down - that's a job for a German GPMG.
