Coming from devs of companies whose open world design have become stagnantly complacent, their criticism of Elden Ring's UX & quest design and deeming Elden Ring not worth its level of critical success is hilarious. Some of the criticism is valid, but the way they lambast the game's score and success comes across as petty. Amazing what can happen when a company cares more about its players base instead of fucking everyone over to make the most money. This game didn’t release with over a hundred game breaking bugs, it didn’t make any false promises, it had every single thing that was showcased in trailers, and it had an update less than three weeks after launch that fixed 90% of any bugs it had and balanced all the things that were too op.

I mean to me this is not surprising. People and gamers have been rabidly defending devs from any sort of critics or bad looks from poor game launchers or broken and unfished titles, that now devs have grown cocky enough to say bitter whiny victims rants now and worst part is...some people will shrug it off! Already some people in this section saying that there big bad business suit overlords forced and ruined there hard work...when no. Majority of the time Developers are just bad at Their job and are poor at making sure the game works or have very uninspired ideas with no innovation. @MaryArts
@MaryArts 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. It makes you want to find out more. Or you are like my boyfriend and say: "Dude, that sounds like a chore. Imma go do my thing" Kills NPC. 😂 In Elden Ring you can decide what you want to do and what are your motivations on becoming the Elden Ring. I serisously don't know any other game that does that. You might be invested in the story like in The Witcher, but you will never feel like you as a player are a living being, a part of the story, like in Elden Ring.

It can be frustrating to the new comers of Souls games and it's a bit of a hassle because unlike Dark Souls or Sekiro, Elden Ring is an open world. That said, does it make the game bad? Hell no.
@Khtras
@Khtras Жыл бұрын
But for the most part, the questing gives you no information at all on where to go. Having no markers (aside from the Volcano Manor assassination targets) is nice and feels more real, but we should be able to have more clues on where to go to continue the character's journey. Look at Millicent, she goes to multiple spots on the map and somewhat randomly, before you can finish the quest

This game is a fucking masterpiece in regard to level design, game play, and art. I think what cements this open world is that From used the dark souls paradigm and just ran with it. But From Soft makes games- they don't ask "how do we make bank" when they start the design process, they ask "how can we give the players an experience they will remember for years to come?" Do they intend to make money? Of course! Do they rip out chunks of content and gameplay to hide it behind a DLC paywall to make even bigger bucks? Even now with the latest patch that allows you to complete Nepheli and Kenneth Haight's quest there is absolutely no indication or clues they would show up where they did. Elden ring is the first time i’ve been truly sucked into a game since Breath of the Wild, this game is just everything I’ve ever loved about videogames in one gigantic package. I had complaints about the UX in my first 8-10ish hours, but those went away once I began understanding the game better, and soon as I had that realization the game all clicked together and I’ve had an overwhelmingly positive experience since. When you take the time to understand the game’s combat and progression mechanics, it actually works and feels infinitely better and more meaningful than the bs open world design of other games

I'm in the same basket, never played games like this, thought it wouldn't be for me, I was dead wrong. Possibly the best game I've ever played, but I have to say I still do think the controls could be so much better. There's loads of quality of life improvements they could make, and PC gamers were neglected, not even talking about performance issues right now, but they didn't even bother making the UI/UX elements display the PC controls, so you had to guess what button it is on the keyboard. I play with a controller right now, and it displays the keyboard buttons. Surely they can detect you're using a controller and display the appropriate keys. Next, whether you're using keyboard or controller, shifting between weapons/flasks/sorceries/incantations is quite inconvenient, using arrows, really? That should be an easy fix, whichever way they do it, they chose about the worst way of going about it. Either allow custom keybinds for every weapons/spell/flask or make a little wheel that allows quick switch, or both. Other than that, I agree, this is actually the first game that actually feels like open world. I don't have to do anything in any particular order. For all the small complaints I have about the game, I absolutely love it despite all the shortcomings.

Another thing to be said about Elden Ring is this initial period of discovery. We're all learning the game by trial and error and sharing our experiences. Despite being a single player game for the most part it never really feels like you're playing it alone. The community is always there to give you tips and tricks and tecniques, and if you're stuck in one part or a boss, there is a high chance that other people are struggling as well. one thing I love about elden ring is you keep finding reason to go back to the starting areas or old areas to unlock new content over and over gain, and you keep finding stuff in places you thought were complete. its incredible and overwhelming, its like you never run out of stuff to do and if you ever find yourself stuck I recommend one thing, use your map markers, place a marker into an area you think you should come back or has an interesting npc, farming spot or treasure you havent unlocked. it will help you a lot with navigation, my only grudges right now are performance issues and maybe been able to add text or notes in game.

The "quest design" these other developers would subject you to is like a carnival ride. They strap you in and take you along a ride (whether or not you really want to go along), in FromSoft's case I feel the design is more immersive because it leaves you with only the tools your character has (i.e., their surroundings, inventory, map, etc.). Especially when you consider that this is an RPG, you shouldn't be hearing your character mutter solutions or ideas to themselves, you should BE the character.

Ubisoft games…. Capture this outpost. Climb this tower. Do it with a gun. Do it with a gun in A different environment with a higher numeric title. Now do it with a sword. Do it with a sword in a different environment with a new word after the title. Now annualize, and monetize. Aren’t we good at this? Oh, rainbow six siege is making money, let’s make the same game but against aliens with less content, slap a new title on it and watch the idiots pay for it. The last good assassins creed was Black Flag, the last good Far Cry was 2, maybe 3. The last good Rainbow Six was hands down Vegas 2. A creatively bankrupt company, clinging to the same IPs that once made them great, while instituting changes ONLY with money in mind. Not creativity or fun. Once a company experiences success, they all seem to follow the same path, or get bought up by someone who will force them down the same path. They need to remember they were once a small studio making quality games with talented individuals, just like From Soft. Instead of crapping on them, maybe take notes. If I spent all my money on McDonald’s and cigarettes, but got mad at the dude who saved and bought a house… is the dude who saved the idiot because I refused to change my ways? Nope. Not to anyone who isn’t an imbecile. Want to know why people buy annualized games? Because they’re bored to tears of your game a year later. Elden Ring will be being enjoyed for many years to come,with hundreds of hours of genuine diversity in playthroughs and builds, new discoveries, and ACTUAL entertaining gameplay. Ghost recon used to be a hard game, so did rainbow six, now it’s an arcade game. Elden Ring is difficult, almost like it’s intentionally catering to adults who have jobs and can spend money, not petulant children who use mom and dads credit cards to get a new hat in the game. Get a clue. Rant over.

That's actually really nice to know. There are a few points where the game could improve on clarity of UI. For example there still is no option to compare armor/weapons in the store with currently your equipped armor/weapon, a staple for the RPG genre that has been around for decades. It's also not obvious that upgrading shields upgrades stability like it does in previous titles because many shields gain a fraction of a point of stability per upgrade level, meaning they often don't get an increase in stability until +2. I'll also say that for a same that has so *many* upgrade tiers, the game is really stingy about handing you upgrade mats, especially compared to DS 3 where they just showered you with titanite shards. Honestly kinda weird, you'd think they'd be more generous with upgrade mats due to how many weapons there are and how open world the game is.

Exactly: world design Which is what Devs tend to forget. You can lead a player without quests and narrow one way paths. Of course it requires a little intuition and experience on the player's side but Devs can create studies or ask beta testers if they have a good time finding their path through the world. Until you defeat Godrick, the path is super clear without being narrowed down. After that you can do whatever you like, while still being drawn to the bestest places, like seeing the Academy or the castles in the distance. You know what to do. Or getting to the destroyed bridge beside stormveil castle. You find a path and it leads you to the north. You didn't give up at the bridge and no one told you to go that path, but you thought: "Hmm, that platform looks like it leads somewhere I think. Lets look further into it" World Design is very veeeeery difficult and usually Devs tend to either make the world directionless or make you go through paths that are closed off in all but one direction. When the Devs critizise Elden Ring, they definitelly don't get what is making it great: Character and World Design.

As for the quest stuff i‘d agree to like a log of the ones you found with the hints the npcs gave you since there is so much going on in elden ring compared to ds. im also constantly finding more its hard to keep track. but other than that it’s a whole lot more interesting than all the linear quests you get usually in open world games.

One thing I absolutly love about Eldenring is the fact that there are (most of the time) more then just that one solution to a problem. So you want to get to this Boss? Well you can either try to fight on the obvious path, or look for a more hidden path and sneak by or maybe find a shortcut. Combine that with the UX not telling you anything and you got yourself a game where you can actually explore in a way you want to, instead of beeing baby sitted through. And the only time the game actually does drop you a clue is in form of grace traces that show you a vague direction. The rest is up to the player. I can't say much for PvP though, since I purely started playing Eldenring for the exploring part (while occasionally joining a friend in boss fights).

One example: Why the bloody hell do I have to use the piss poor rotating through my items like when using a controller instead of being able to bind my items to hotkeys. In short - they did a very poor job with the PC controlls. Instead of developing optimized controlls for mouse&keyboard and making use of all the advantages they have we are stuck with controlls that still feel like a f...ing controller. They should also integrate a comparison between equipment. Especially when in a shop there's no way to compare the items on offer to what you have and that's really annoying. That said - the game is awesome, its just that there's room for improvement.

I'd say one of elden rings strengths is that it feels more like an actual open world. Having quest trackers, having your map show recommended levels, enemies having markers indicating relative difficulty, makes it feel like you're being funneled down a specific path. Exploration isn't really encouraged in that way. In elden ring, when I was low level I stumbled into caelid, did my best to progress through it, made a decent way and eventually made the decision for myself to come back later. I COULD continue because while the enemies were hard they weren't impossible. But I realized I was out of my depth. I didn't look at a map and go "oh guess I shouldn't go there yet", or see skull markers over enemy names. It was in itself a form of discovery, and discovery is what makes the idea of an open world appealing.

That's because in Elden Ring there are reasons to explore. The game is hard and has all sorts of cool weapons, items and bosses. Exploring is the only way to find those. Why would you explore in a game like Far Cry when you can use every random machine gun to kill everyone? Good luck beating Elden Ring with early weapons and no upgrades. Or in Assassin's Creed Odyssey, where you can pick any random weapon and upgrade it to your current level, making most weapons feel the same. Also, there's no point in getting stronger because enemies scale with your character. There is no real progression except when devs want.

Since the franchise heavily relies on player skill and not just metrics, there's always room for improvements and countless "I did it!" moments for the players. Actually the quest design in Elden ring is flat out genius IMO. Before the game came out, I was worried about it, since it's Fromsoft's first open-world but man did they nailed it. It's crazy too, they managed to make things engaging and fun with the bare minimum of setup. As you mentioned, it's merely about paying attention to what the NPCs say, your surroundings, etc., but it works. At no point do I feel bored running around the world (and the same cannot be said for many open-world RPG, that's for sure). The choice of not holding the player's hand being a key ingredient to that. Because no markers are telling you where to go and because your character doesn't give you clues of what you're supposed to be doing, the player is encouraged to look around. Another thing that explains Elden ring success, I think, is the balancing of the game. Fromsoft have always been masters at balancing their games but their talent shines even brighter with Elden ring. If I take Forbidden west, for example, the game is amazing but the balancing is out of the window. The encounters are very chaotic, for the most part, with each enemy having essentially access to similar tools (close range, anti-flanking maneuver, long-range attacks...). The game is tactical thanks to the genius machine parts system but every encounter kinda feels the same (shoot the part you need, dodge the shot, roll a lot...). Fromsoft design their games in such a way that the difficulty comes from a million different directions. Once, you'll be fighting one tough enemy, next a swarm of tiny monsters easy to kill but deadly if they overwhelm you. Then you can be facing archers, or fall into a trap. Enemies can ambush you in many different ways, which reward players for paying attention to their surroundings, sometimes the environment itself is your enemy... The experience feels engaging and fresh all the way to the end and that's a huge advantage compared to many other games and a big factor that pushed this game to the top (deservingly so).

Its a challenging game, yes, but even that can be mitigated somewhat with grinding (if you choose to do so) and optimizing your items when you can. Before getting my ass blasted by the tree guardian that you have to fight to get the other crystals for the flask of mystique. The game didnt tell me a damn thing, where to go, what to do, because I havent even talked to the guy outside the catacombs yet, so far it was just me and exploration.

No matter where the camera is in the game, it looks like a perfect wallpaper. The only other game to make me amazed at the world and it's environment as much as this was Nier Automata, and honestly Elden Ring might even beat it in that compartment. I never played a Souls game besides Sekiro (which is also awesome), and Elden Ring easily allowed me to get into the world and progress. It's pathetic and hilarious how the people who make the most generic, bland and soulless (hehe) open world games out there are trying to diss something that actually poured in tons of talent and passion into something fantastic.

5:59 You know it's very interesting that I have never felt lost in Elden Ring. And even when I find NPCs in the world.. I have heard the advice get a notebook so you can write stuff down but I find myself never being lost or taking forever to memorize a path, and I tend to remember where NPCs are and what they offer.. but in games like WoW it's like I always feel sooo lost and it takes me forever to memorize the layout of a city etc. I think all those question marks and way points and shit make things harder for you because it makes you lazy and then you just can't work as well as you could if you weren't relying on that.. It's the same way in real life with GPS. Since GPS came out on phones now nobody can get anywhere without using GPS a few times, and if it's a complicated route people still always have to use GPS to get there for fear that they will miss turns, get lost, etc. Oh you know what, I actually do get lost in Elden Ring, but ONLY when I'm being chased by a mob and I CANNOT OPEN THE MAP TO SEE WHERE I'M GOING. Another UX gripe.. Opening the map is not the same as traveling to a lost grace. You can disable traveling to lost graces but let the user open the map.

I could go on and on about this game but there's one thing I really just want to shout out to the void - one of my usual issues with open world games is that I never really feel any incentive to explore. I mean, that's supposed to be the whole fun of an open world game, right? But the world is usually so empty and all the activities in it are clearly marked so you can just go from A to B to C etc., and the formula is usually that all those activities are one of a handful of copy/paste encounters or collectibles or whatever. With Elden Ring nothing being clearly marked makes me actually want to explore and look for secrets and stuff - plus the world actually looks and feels like a fantasy world, for once. Elden Ring has remined me why I used to love this genre and given me an experience I haven't had since I first played Morrowind.

crunch has ruined game design entirely. AAA games cut corners so hard there's barely any corners left to cut, because they have to finish the games in time to please the shareholders. Elden Ring has apparently been in development since well before Sekiro, likely around six years total if I recall correctly. there's also a culture of refusal to reuse assets from prior projects. a bunch of people got upset when the Network Test came out because a couple of the door opening animations were reused from DS3. absolutely bizarre. if it works, if it's good, and if it saves you some time, why would you redo work you've already done?

As of now, I have 24 hours in the game, and I have barely even left the first area, Limgrave. This game is phenomenal. I haven’t even went online yet except for a few times to help my brother kill a boss, as he is new to these games. The game does NOT hold your hand, I had a chest I opened teleport me to an absolutely cursed mine that I was WAY under leveled for, and they wouldn’t let me fast travel out of there until I found another site of Grace. I was MAD, I lost 7,500 runes which was a lot of money at the time. Yet, I love that about these games. The idea of a genuine challenge, and a game that doesn’t hold your hand or spoon-feed you instructions. Instead, it says “Here’s the mountain. Climb it.” except they leave it up to you to find the gear you need, and to train yourself to gain the skill necessary to progress. The immersion is on a different level as well. “Immersive” does not mean “realistic”. Immersion is genuinely being afraid to die in the game, so much so that your hands are shaking. Immersion is riding your horse on a mountain trail, and noticing how beautiful the scenery is, and just stopping to stare at it. Immersion is fighting a king corrupt with power who has transformed into a massive abomination while a full orchestral soundtrack is playing, and you feel every swing of your weapon. Fromsoft have created one of the last few modern games that create that sense of wonder and awe I felt as a kid when I played the first Halo game. We’ll be playing this years to come. Just like how Bloodborne still has a massive following and player base despite being around 6 years old.

One thing I love about a little pixel game called hyper light drifter is that no matter what direction you go you're *always* making progress to your end goal. There is only one goal, defeat the bosses, raise the pillars, free Anubis. That's it. You can never be lost because no matter where you are you're doing that. That's how I feel about Elden ring and it's quests. I don't feel overwhelmed, there's no punishment for going wherever you want except reaching a skill ceiling you may not be at yet. But you're always making progress towards your next great rune and becoming Elden lord. This is my first fromsoft game and I've been really enjoying it

At this point honestly being TOLD fetch quest as a part of the main story isn't good. There's a few in Elden Ring for sure yet it normally gives you something. Hell the main quest is "Become the Elden Lord" now HOW you get there is on you. Are you a mage nukeing mobs from range? A sneaky bandit fixated on status effects? Or trying to be that warrior right in the middle of the fights? The game is SO open you can skip the tutorial outright. That's great design since a lot of people forget MAYBE just maybe some people don't want that tutorial slog everytime they start a new game.
