There's no reason to communicate in such a way that will pit really good games against each other. People can have preferences & respect what other games accomplish. This ex dev's take I think is far better put and I agree that Ubisoft especially needs to change up their open world design. Marvel's Guardian's Of The Galaxy was pretty awesone tho. Loved the game. I wish they'd had done Marvel's Avengers like the Spider-Man games. Open world, with the ability to play as all the Avengers from the movies, a few DLCs here & there, with none of that microtransaction bs.

@@J.B.1982 I think it needs to be a mix. Ubisoft makes open-world games that require little no no brain power, its mindless. From makes their side quests very vague and you have to beat your head up against a wall trying to find items, another npc, etc. once you're given little to no direction on how to continue. The main quest or flow of their games are very easy to follow though. Elden Ring needs a quest menu that lists all of the clues that you've found so far and a general direction or marker on the map to show the player the direction that you're supposed to head next like how the bonfires show you the guiding light. Like there are a reason why these quest tutorials for ER are accumulating views on YT. I can totally see why people think the quest design sucks, because I think it does too.

Ubisoft has been a joke for years now. Ghost of Tsushima showed them how the games they churn out are supposed to be, and Elden Ring showed how little thought they put on their open worlds. I notice so many people are used to just skipping through game dialogue because of games like Watchdogs, Assassin's Creed, The Division, even GTA and RDR.. a lot of the stories sound cool until you make people watch a 15 minute dialogue that doesn't actually matter because the quest markers and log will give you the TLDR. Fromsoft never makes you listen for more than a couple minutes, and they make what people say actually matter. IF you don't pay attention to what the NPCs say, of course you won't have a clue what is going on in their worlds.

Something like monster hunter would suck without some form of quest marker, in earlier games it was done by paint balls and in world the scout flies. That's a good piece of design because it has an in world explanation and requires some exploration first. Street racing games would be unplayable without them. The fact that this game has many flaws and yet is still critically acclaimed shows how amazing Elden Ring truly is. It’s a game that doesn’t hold your hand or pump micro transactions down your throat. People who never even played a souls type game or haven’t enjoyed the genre in the past love it. Why? cause it’s up to you how you wanna play it. To me this game is the easiest game in the souls genre. The reason why is because of the fact that it’s open world. You run into a brick wall you can just go explore elsewhere until you feel you are ready for that brick wall. I probably have a lot quests going on at the same time. Ill finish them as I explore. Which I love personally.

One thing I love about Elden Ring as opposed to other open worlds is that each section has its own identity. It’s own personality. Personally, that has made me much more attached to the game. Each city, area, dungeon is so unique that I can remember them so well. Who can forget climbing up the tree in the capital to fight Godfrey? Assassins Creed Valhalla (which I put over 100 hours into) every single city looks the exact same. Most of the areas look the exact same. You can’t even tell the settlements apart. Same with Ghosts of Tsushima to some extent. Every enemy camp and settlement all have the bland brown colored wood. Makes each area much less memorable and quite frankly without the HUD it would almost be impossible to get around due to the lack of relative location.

I bet 99.9% of the negative feedback from UBI devs is jealousy that they neither have the talent or company backing to do a game half as good as Elden Ring. When the main question in game development comes to “How am I going to make as much money as possible from this game?” then you know you’re f’ed as a developer and should resign out of respect to the industry. Game development is about pushing the envelop of making games. Gaining a community that supports you financially is part of that process but not the end goal.

I think it's because they slaved their working careers away, through crunch time and hardship only for their labors of love to be met with lukewarm reception while something with a completely alien design absolutely shatters all their accomplishments. It's a lot to make a video game, you don't leave that process dissatached to your product, it's a part of you. So to see this happen to their "baby" has got to be soul crushing and painful. My heart goes out to them honestly. But hopefully this marks a shift in game design moving forward.

I personally love how Fromsoft do story telling in their games, I like the more minimalist style of UI NOT "Telling" me everything, i like the exploration aspect of their games, i love reading the lore of an item and noticing WHERE it was placed and coming to my own conclusion of what the story is. I also love that i don't have a Quest log filling up my screen, or showing me EXACTLY where to go. i like not feeling like i have to gather every dot on my map of collectables. I like having no DIRECT way i am forced to go in an open world, it really does feel like an open game experience. I am also very tired of "Witcher Sense" in modern games. being able to see enemy's through walls takes away a lot of the mystery of whats behind a door or a wall or around the corner. I still think traditional Open world style is still fun at times? sure, but it defiantly is a breath of fresh air to see something different for an open world.

It's nice to see games do different things. but not ever game is going to be for everyone. The Real takeaway from these kinda discussions is that gamers need to realise there are games out there you wont like how they do things, but other people do. this doesn't mean the game is bad its just different. and we dont need to always try and FORCE a game to be something it isnt. When a flopped game takes risks, the amount of people that only say it was bad, without elaborating how, is very high. I feel that this contributes to why many AAA studios go for the safe formulaic routes, because it would be preferable to be seen copy-pasting safe stuff that sells well, rather than take risk, fail, and be seen as people who don't know how to make a game and possibly suffer from lower sales.

Gaming companies look at backlash and think "there's nothing redeemable about this project, they hate it, let's go back to what we've been selling", but they fail to see the nuance in backlash, which might be for a mechanic that fails to work, or for glitches that break the game and make for a bad user experience. Gamers look at games and see the trees that make up the forest. Game companies see that gamers don't like one tree, and throw out the whole forest, and instead provide a meadow that's full of things we've seen a million times.

This games open world, and the entire game in general, has really been reminding me of Skyrim. The sheer vastness and complexity of the world is what I love. The hidden areas, the zones you get teleported to, all the fun ways they utilize the open world are great. For instance theres one chest you can find at the Tower of Return that takes you to Lyndell much earlier in the game, but only to a secret area that doesnt really connect with the rest of the city. This allows very early game players to see the beauty of Lyndell and the Erdtree before sinking hours into the game. You get a glimpse of a beautiful mid game area as a reward for exploring the early game area and I think things like that are just awesome and under appreciated.

Most AAA devs: "I spent a lot of time making this thing, I'm going to make sure everyone sees it. Players might not figure it out and complain about lack of content." From Software: "Let's put an entire zone behind a hidden wall that's behind another hidden wall! Someone will figure it out eventually and it'll be awesome!" The differing mindsets of these devs are pretty interesting. I get the impression those at From Software actually enjoy games and have respect for their customers while AAA devs care more about maximizing profits.

It's the kind of mentality that you used to see with older smaller devs like the early years of id Software. Developers who want to challenge their players, who enjoy messing with them and drawing them in deeper into the world. For From Software to hold onto that after being in this business for decades and essentially being a triple A company for a few years now, is downright heartwarming. Even now they never forgot who they were, or what made them famous in the first place.

"But at this moment the entire buffet is just one type of bread" is such an excellent line, that developer gets it. Not like the others that have no ounce of professionalism or clearly any idea what people actually want from their games. Its a great take on the stale and boring crap that those developers make, they've become too comfortable churning out the same shit under a different title and they're shocked when people respond so greatly to a game that breaks that mold. Its like they're jealous of the games success but personally, it feels like their insecurity is leaking through, "oh no now we have to actually come up with new ideas for our games? Gods no, fuck elden ring for forcing developers to come up with something creative." Just seems like they're feeling threatened and they're lashing out. For the longest time I thought that I was done with games, nothing gave me that satisfaction anymore. That is, until the souls games and more importantly elden ring that for the first time in so long, gave me that excitement and childish glee in exploring a new world. Its not quest after quest after quest after quest, its literally you get to do what you want and nothing is really gonna stop you. From soft gets the open world concept and nailed it. Its an open world, why would you want to force players into pursuing quests? Let them explore, its literally the name of the genre. I also love how theres no mini map, I'm 100% sure if they had one ill just be staring at it most of the time to see my location, and that distracts you from the game itself, its not just point a to b, sometimes along the way you see something that looks interesting and you go explore it. That's whats so immersive about the game, it unapologetically doesn't hold the player's hand and coddle them. The game speaks for itself.

Where you can just enter the world and wander into areas you were not meant to go into and be instantly punished by a much stronger enemy. Current open world game use scaling enemies, invisible walls, and blocked off areas to guide and players all while never letting them struggle too hard. To have a game that lets you make your own mistakes is frustrating but ultimately much more rewarding. Once youve climbed these hurdles it is gratifying to see how much stronger your character has become unlike other games..(looking at you Oblivion and Skyrim) where as soon as you find that good gear every bandit seems to also have it.

There's definitely valid Elden Ring criticism out there, but a lot of it feels like "I don't like the game so it's objectively bad" and "I disagree with the design choices of the Souls genre as a whole so it objectively sucks". If you're gonna criticize media you have to learn how to do it. Media critique is not just "I don't like it so it's bad", you have to consider what the people behind the production wanted to achieve and how they wanted to achieve it.

@@rickybobbyroode9814 I mean.. Dark Souls 1 had a lot of issues like magic 1 shotting people, twinking, infinite backstabs, teleporting backstabs, flat damage negation meant buffing or heavy weapons were the best things to use in pvp, stunlock chaining, the level design can easily make people stop playing if they wander into New Londo or the catacombs early, failure to keep your gear and character at the appropriate levels will also make people drop the game and it's unclear for newer players to know where to progress, I've personally played all the games blind but I know a lot of people even in Elden Ring play with a guide. These are fair complaints but the games overall are amongst my favorites so the issues don't get to me as much as others. I know someone who loves kingdom hearts but hates Nier:Automata. Whenever I ask why they don't give a good response, it's alright to not like something but it's dumb to just say it's bad, everyone has their own preferences. @@John-996 The open world is pretty good imo. Not too cluttered, good amount of waypoints (i.e. bonfires) to teleport to/from, dungeons or minibosses always include unique rewards and almost no part of the overworld is locked behind any boss, and side content isn't shoved in your face like in other open world games. You could explore around 70% of the map before beating any story-relevant bosses. The map itself is also very detailed and makes it pretty easy to find relevant/interesting structures if you're actively looking for them or study the map. The boss fights are pretty good, although there are some fights I personally dislike (which is to be expected from the sheer amount) and some that are reused. For playing all the souls games and now Elden Ring, I have to say that the that the game UX/UI is the best it's ever been. Personally I feel like scrolling through the tabs has been simplified especially for those wanting to know more about an item. For key and story essential items, they actually separate theses items into separate categories. Especially when it come to materials for upgrading weapons. They've even included an option to hold the (y/trigangle) button for more options and slots. Overall, for a returning player it's the best that it's ever been, but there are new players to acknowledge. So of course there would be some natural confusion, I hope most people see it as a plus more than overall a negative confusion. Don't get me wrong there could definitely be a little more slice of life things that could be added, but on how souls/borne games have been, this is great.

Las breath of real gaming ended a bit after the 7th gen consoles launch. Their early days had just as creative games that respected players, then we were hit with the COD ripoffs, DLC issues began etc. Then from 8th gen to now we're stuck w/awful open world games taking the place of the COD ripoffs then the even worse live service micro transactions replacing the DLC issues. Fromsoft's games feel like they're continuing what video games were tbh: true game design with hardware to support such visuals and world's.

"It just paves the road for an experience that feels ideal. Like it was exactly what the developers envisioned, like it was really made out of love and not out of greed." That right there is why Elden Ring has been so successful. The entire game is so incredibly well done (barring a few technical issues), with no monetization. That and the handholding in a lot of these games is pretty ridiculous. The immersion level that Elden Ring gives, by something as simple as literally not even being able to pause the game, is crazy.

So FromSoftware releases a game that their fans wanted them to make. The fans love the game. Then we have developers from other companies known for doing the opposite of what FromSoftware is doing giving backhanded criticism about a game they don't understand. How about you stay in your lane and keep running on that yearly release hamsterwheel shitshow. I was afraid after Sekiro when journalists and whoever demanded an easy mode that it would have some impact on their next game. Glad to see FromSoftware knows who they're making games for. I like From games and i still think their UI and UX is bad for no good reason, Sekiro did a much better job by comparison. Just hire an UX designer. Case and point, the "easy mode" is hidden behind a npc that you have to find by teleporting to a previous area, at night, after getting torrent(your horse), apparently you can miss this interaction. And you can only buy this bell item in the main hub shop till later on, in which case you'll have to know "x" brings up the explanation that tells you what summoning spirit ashes even mean(why not put "x to read description" right next to the item icon, a lot more people would see it). Finally you'll have to equip the ashes, not in your weapon, like the similarly named ashes of war or memorized like your spells, but rather it's treated as an items that doesn't require equipping the bell. Also, you can't equip items in the inventory screen despite being able to use them there, you'll have to go to the equipment screen to do that, then linearly scroll through all of your items in a single direction in real time to actually use them, but don't worry! there is a quick access pouch if you hold triangle, their is also a tutorial for it, but it doesn't tell you where to find it in your menu(how long did it take you to find it? I know it took some people a couple of days). Almost forgot, pay close attention to the tutorial pop-ups or you'll be really confused on why sometimes you can and sometimes you can't summon spirits. That's how you access "easy mode".

The quest design in Elden Ring is the most immersive I've played in a very long time. Getting into spoiler territory, joining Ranni's group is magnificent in its casual organic nature. The minimalistic UX adds to this, making you focus and absorb what's happening. Neither is a negative. By abandoning the checklist formula the game promotes going on adventures of the player's own making, and even blends major scripted events into that freedom, rather than have the main narrative clash with it. From beginning to end nearly everything feels optional, and the main story's importance confidently speaks for itself. Simply put, From figured it out. They cracked the open ended narrative code.

I feel the opposite. I joined the Ranni group, dude tells me to deliver something to someone I've never heard of before, without even telling me their location or general direction. 30 hours later, still haven't found that person, maybe she's dead by now. I think it was a she, don't really remember the name anymore, can't even check, because no quest logs, conversation logs. and the NPC won't repeat anything. I wanted to deliver the thing, but had no fucking clue on where to go, and the quest "ended" there for me, unless I look on the internet or find the person by fucking pure chance. That's not immersive AT ALL.

My only gripe is the quest design, the rest I love. Including the minimal map that you can use to find mines, encampments, churches, etc without someone telling you it's there. However, since it's an open world, I don't know if killing a boss or discovering a new area will break, or create new storylines/plot/quest/characters. And if I want to learn more about a character or, get something vital like the free invasion finger, I would need to travel around the map over and over to ensure that nothing has changed. In previous fromsoft games, as long as you were curious, and at worst, you walked around a bit, you were able to progress with quest by naturally playing the game. Here, if you miss the entrance of the blood church in this huge map, you just can't invade for free. OR, you are actually in the right place, but turns out you need to kill one specific boss for him to appear. So in your mind, the area that you cleared and considered as done? Now has the npc. Very nice. Just as an example. Of course it would feel great if I randomly found my favorite npc, which are all of them, in the overworld. But it just doesn't seem right that I need a guide to follow a questline.
@baconsir1159

Really? If anything it felt way more obscure to get certain events or abilities in old Fromsoft games. How many people totally missed The White Lady in DS1 and never got chaos spells or couldn't save Solaire? Or missed the painted world because they didn't roll off the elevator and pretend to be an egg? Didn't get the Uchigatana because they didn't kill the vendor? Etc. Meanwhile in Elden Ring you can still buy from vendors after they die because of the Bell Bearings, you often get certain necessary items to continue important stories even if you sequence break or important characters die. You can definitely still miss big things but that's the tradeoff for the lack of handholding yeah? The world is so huge, dense, and minimal in its handholding that missing things is basically inevitable. Which is a good thing imo, as it makes subsequent playthroughs more interesting.

Made it hard trying to get runes back in a boss fight when I had no idea where they were since the compass doesn't appear in boss fights, however you can turn that setting off and just have the U.I. constantly on. So for me I'm one sided on this saying I really don't have any problems with the U.I. at all since I'm used to it.
