Cayenne is the capital of French Guiana, which is a French and European Union territory in South America and Amazonia. It is a real tropical rainforest with jungles full with jaguars, anacondas, caimans, monkeys, macaws, piranhas and uncontacted tribes of native americans.

Thanks! I thought the same, before coming here I've been looking for a simple walk around the streets to get the idea, but there was no much. When I got here I understood why some many people love it.

People very much swim in the sea in French Guiana, it did this all my childhood and never had any problems. It's perfectly safe... well as long as you know how to swim well. But yeah, the colour is not exactly appealing. As the dry season progresses, it usually gets a bit better though.

Other than the typical "don't mess with drugs" and "don't touch snakes if you don't know what you are doing" I can't think about anything specific. Probably the safest place other than Canada in the Americas.

I am American , learning French. My goal is to live in one of these French tropical departments. Reunion, Guadeloupe and Martinique are at the top of my list but I’ve never been. What made u choose French Guiana over reunion & Guadeloupe ?
@FarStrider
@FarStrider 6 ай бұрын
Hello there. I didn't really choose, but I may. It was just the next department on the list. Depending of what you are after, they may seem similar or very different from each other. As nature they are pretty diffetent. Guadeloupe has a lot of beaches, small lagoons, small mountain and some rainforest, but next to no terrestrial animals. Reunion has excellent mountain, epic views, one so-so beach with a so-so lagoon, but is infestad with sharks and again no terrestrial animals. French Guiane is kind of opposite case, no sea for swimming, no mountains, but huge virgen jungle full with amazing animals. People I asume are the same, as Reunion is a bit more European and developed.

@@FarStrider thank you for this answer. Which of those has the most extroverted locals and friendly people? Have u been to Martinique ?
@FarStrider
@FarStrider 6 ай бұрын
@@Kreolevybz To Martinique, just as a visitor, but as far as I can see and from what I've heard they are about the same. Reunion is by far the friendliest, also the most diverse and European-like, but this, the last one is not the cause of the former, it is just a coincidence. Also when I say "friendly" don't forget we are talking about France, which is notorious in that aspect, so "friendliest place in France" msy not be so friendly in the eyes of an US citizen.

@@FarStrider I understand. I want to choose one to expat and hope to build a family in one. But I want to choose the place most culturally compatible. I like countries where the culture is diverse, people value fun, leisure and family time.

Does Cayenne have a lot of opportunities,? and what about the living?
@FarStrider
@FarStrider Жыл бұрын
Hm, I can't really answer, the questions are way too general. Opportunities for what? For me personally yes, I have all the opportunities I need here for everything I want. Living, same. Only thing I miss here is the nice blue water which all other French overseas departments have. Everything else is very good for me personally.

Is there much crime? I want to eventually go to south America but the violence etc is very off putting. Brazil or Colombia.

This is a region in the European Union, although a bit more dangerous than the average West European country, it's still the safest place other than Canada in the Americas. For 1 year living here I am yet to see violence or serious crime, the worst I had was a stolen bike. Brazil and Colombia are on another level of violence and crime.

@@mrggy91281 Well when I was in Suriname the locals told met they wished it was run by the Dutch again. Since the Dutch left it’s been relatively unstable and a lot more poor and crime ridden.

@@zrIywcN8XJdHaY13K3tx I see. It's part of France and EU and in that regard it has rather average prices. It's situation is more akin to how are Hawaii and Alaska to USA, which are not part of the continuous USA, but have similar prices, etc
