A flying robot with flapping wings that can dart through the air like an insect has been unveiled by scientists. It can hovver, dart left or right and even do a loop the loop or barrel roll. Like a real insect, the wings beat at 17 times per second to provide lift and can speed along at over 15 miles an hour. Developed by Dutch scientists, DelFly Nimble is based on the fruit fly and promises to revolutionise drone design and our understanding of insect flight. The first autonomous, free-flying and agile flapping-wing robot was developed by TU Delft researchers from the Micro Air Vehicle Laboratory (MAVLab), in collaboration with Wageningen University & Research.

Is it possible to make a larger version of that for a human to use?

it is easy for small flyers to flap their wings at 20-30 Hz. thats 20-30 flapping cycles per second. because their wings do not weigh much. imagine the power you would need for large, heavy wings to flap at that frequency.

Consider the body weight to wing area ratio: A bee weighs 0.1g. The wings are about 1cm². That is 10cm²/g. For a person of 60000g (60kg) that would be 600000cm² (60m²).

Ok ik this is really old, and ive been wondering this myself, so, i asked my brother about this and he said that a light weighted material to shape the wings like cellophane (it needs structure so put something to make it still.) Create a wing (like the size of an arm but a little bit bigger, then we would need to make it flap like beetle wings, so it lifts our HEAVY ASSES off the ground, but we would need atleast 4 of these wings on each side so its better, then maybe in the future we will have better mechanisms that makes it flap really fast, and also we would need aerodynamic, so think with me, we would need to lean our torso frontwards for the wings to pull the wind below us, so you could just jump and Lean forward, and you wouldnt also be able to stand flying easily because of your aerodynamic, so thats it.

makes you wonder what fuels a real fly to do this movement?

for example a hummingbird has to feed ~1.5 times of its bodyweight daily. and thats all sugar. the equivalent of a human that weighs 50kg eating 75kg of sugar daily. they feed off plants, 5-8 times every hour.

CL Melonshark pretty much. Genes code proteins, proteins make up chemical signals that control the insects movement via simple hydraulics
