Finally found a nice press to restore! This beautiful blacksmithing tool is used to bend, cut, drift and punch steel, but with different dies can assist in many other operations.
This press has a particular frame construction called "A-frame" that should be more rigid than other presses but restrict the operation because materials can be loaded in only from the front. Two weights at the bar ends are there to add momentum that help maintain the shaft in motion. It weights 57kg (125lbs) and measure 50x21cm by cm tall (20x8in wide by in tall) with the screw shaft 4cm (1.6in) in diameter.
Although very rusted and chipped the press was in great mechanical condition, seems like it has been well greased over time, all thread are still in perfect condition.
It came with a "FERRE" marking punch but I have no idea of what that is and I can't find any information about it. The word is very close to "ferro" italian name for iron.
Index of operation and materials:
Disassembled with the help of rubber mallet, wd40, heat and elbow grease.
6:33 Electrolysis: water and sodium carbonate solution, parts connected to negative side and steel sacrificial anodes to positive sice of a DC power supply (car battery charger). 2-3 hrs at 10amp.
9:44 Rust converter applied to clean steel for black patina. Resist very well rust if not scratched.
11:00 Generic paint stripper.
12:27 Dark green, hammered finish, paint
13:11 Assembled with grease and white mineral oil
Thank you a lot for watching. See you next week!

I like these tool restoration channels with no narration. Black Beard Projects, Will Matthews, Restore It, and Hand Tool Rescue all follow the same format. Slightly sped up work, with just the sound of work in the background. Sometimes with birds chirping and whatnot. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Used one when I was much younger doing a holiday job in an engineering works, and yes it hurts. If you use it often enough you sort of get in to a rhythm of putting the part in, spinning the handle and swaying out of the way.

You completed a very good restoration of the manual press with one exception, that being protecting the metal itself before you painted the body parts. The paint will easily dry out and begin to blister and eventually, the paint will start to pop off of the metal and once again you will have a partially painted press that will still need metal protection.

@BlackBeardProjects

I have no idea! :') Would like to test but I first need something sturdy and secure to use it. I guess it's easy to test with just a bathroom scale and mechanical advantage right?
@ManCrafting
@ManCrafting 6 жыл бұрын
Black Beard Projects only if the mechanical advantage reduces the pressure by a lot. You’ll just need to know the ratio of the reduction.
@nonjb3811
@nonjb3811 5 жыл бұрын
I would say about 2000kg . it is about 1:40 reduction, so 50kg with hands about 2t down. At least.
@MrKotBonifacy
@MrKotBonifacy 5 жыл бұрын
ManCrafting, Judging by the size of the main screw and "general dimensions" and comparing it with the two presses I own (3T and 5T) I'd put it around 3 tonnes (3000 kG) of FORCE, perhaps even 4T. 5T? Doubt it, but wouldn't bet against... And how much PRESSURE you can get trom this amount of FORCE depends on how concentrated it will be (as pressure is a ratio of force to area). For instance, even though a household sewing machine isn't all that powerfull, the sewing needle tip is very small - thus that rather small force the machine is exerting on the needle translates to pressure at the tip of the neddle in the range of 5000 - 6000 kG/cm2 (72 500 - 82 000 PSI). With industrial sewing machines it is substantially more - once I saw a needle going through a steel plate underneath (it is supposed to go through a small hole in the plate, but the operator pulled the fabric too much, the needle bent, and hit the steel). The plate the needle punctured was approx. 2 mm thick (0.08 in), made of HARDENED steel - and the needle tip got like 5 mm past it.

The handle is already bend. I’m sure it wasn’t enough at some point. Should have pushed the sleeve out and install a nice hydraulic cylinder while it was apart. Although that would not have the old time feeling. It would have been more practical
@chriscmoor
@chriscmoor 6 жыл бұрын
Nicely done. Outside of the pipe wrench faux pas, it was a well executed restoration. If you anticipate doing many of these kinds of restorations, however, you should really consider investing in a sand blaster and a cabinet. A few minutes with baking soda under high pressure can save you hours and hours of chemical soaks, rotary grinding, and hand brushing. Generally, media blasting is kinder to you, kinder to the environment, and much kinder to the tool.

Came here for this. Also it's not the best idea to use flat wrench to loosen stuck bolts, they can slip easily and round the sides. When working with stuck nuts'n'bolts its best to use hex socket, because it delivers the force equally to all the sides of a nut/bolt at once.
