My grandfather, who was born in 1911, told me about his grandparents doing the traditional candles on the tree. It was always a tree cut that day and it pretty much took all day to get things set up. Then sometime in the evening the candles would be lit for a whopping five or ten minutes and were put out. Kinda easier with the lights we use now. Merry Christmas to you and your family Santee. Dude, I had no idea about Martin Luther! That was really cool! (Next year you folks might rustle up some early Hanukkah tales. Idk about Arizona, but there were Jewish congregations in California and Texas in the 1860s.)

I remember seeing an illustration long ago of a cowboy cutting stars out of tin cans for decorating his little Christmas tree. As I was told, my grandparents made their own decorations, too. My mom bought glass ornaments at the "5 & 10" (Woolworth's) a few years before I was born in 1955. My brother still has a few of these ornaments and they are still beautiful! Hope you all stayed warm during the big storm that swept across the USA. Merry Christmas from frigid Vermont!
