Great Topic. I’ve done local History in my area and have surprised by the large number of legal cases on file in our Local Clerk of Court’s Office and especially the large number of Lawsuits filed. I never had any clue that in the previous 200 years that there was so much legal activity. Surely with land and property transactions I expected that to be the case but I was amazed at the personal lawsuits filed “long ago” for all kinds of reasons some that were pretty funny too. Lawyers, you can’t live without them.

So temple Huston was quit the character and left his mark even in my country. My brother inlaws family moved out here to the ranch in the late 1860s and at some point had some leagle issues that temple Houstonhelpedthem with. Apparently he was so inspiring to them that they named his great grandfather temple and his grandfather Huston. His dad was named Husty and now my nephew is named Martin houston both for Martin from the searchers and temple Houston lol.

Another excellent video, Santee! Don't have much to say about lawyers in the old west, or judges mentioned either, I only presume there weren't too many grievances my ancestor saw, or he wasn't allowed into bar-room to see what's going on. Way he saw it the sheriff was the law, the preacher was the defender of the faith and knowledge according to his writings. Well done again.

Study at an accredited law school then passing the Bar exam became the standard at or about the the turn of the century, even though there were still many practicing without a formal education.

Ruffian Santee another good video. Lawyers had lot of crimes to deal with, but on different level today. They dealt with stagecoach robberies, train robberies territorial land and lawlessness. A good book to read is “The Hashknife The early days of Aztec Land and cattle company limited” by Robert H. Carlock good research according to David Grasse.

Nice to see that the ladies could be lawyers in the Wild West. We have to understand that a 5th grader back in those days had reading-comprehension skills that are equivalent to today's college entry skills. (for example) Lawyers are an ancient profession, just like another ancient profession. A lot of times the results are still the same. Corruption also was rampant with some lawyers becoming very wealthy in the process. Then we have Wild West juries that could be 'packed' or bribed to find a guilty person innocent.

Another informative video. You almost make lawyers seem like good guys. Almost. On another note. You mentioned the lack of formal education to practice law back then. Where I grew up in the Commonwealth of Virginia, one did not need a law degree from an institution to apply to the Bar. Even in the 20th Century. The regulations said that one only needed to be "able to read for the law" in order to take the Bar exams. I don't know if this is still the case or not as I have not actually lived there for 51 years.

as odd as apprenticeships sound, even to this day it’s actually not a requirement in every state that you go to law school: you study under a judge or experienced lawyer for four years then take the exam…if you pass, you’re a real lawyer

After I retired from the the police department, I went to work as an investigator for a law firm. Soon, I felt I'd crossed over to "the dark side". Through I was a good at investing everything, I was not comfortable with the outcome. Made me think about the price of justice. I soon quit, and returned to normal life, away from trying to get criminals "off" knowing they were guilty as hell.....
