So I'm a real life truck driver, and I fucking love when you play Truck Sim. It's so funny because you don't know much about it, which doesn't bother me at all, after all it's just a game and you can play it however you want. The one thing I wanted to point out to anyone who might not know why trucks have so many gears.... your average big rig, even the European ones, have massive engines, somewhere in the order of 12 to 16 liters of displacement. The operating range of these beastly chunks of metal is between 1200 and 1700 RPM typically. The peak torque value is what's important, as it is torque that provides the power to pull things. With such a small usable RPM range, you need more gears to stay within the power band. The perfect transmission for me is a 13 speed, the low end is a gap of 400 RPM and the high range is a gap of 200 RPM between gears, so you can keep the engine working in it's peak torque range more effectively. Generally, you just can't accelerate weight very fast, horsepower is a secondary concern compared to torque with trucks.

fun fact, 12 gear trucks is so there is less stress on the engine and gear box with heavy loads and also results in faster acceleration. however dan had no load so starting in like 3rd gear, skipping to 5 to 8 to 10-11 would have no real ill effects. also, it dies while in gear because if the gears cant move, the engine cant fire making it impossible for the truck to run. i mean it means nothing now but if you ever decide to do it again and feel more learned. manual driving is actually very easy if you know how to run a clutch.

@@televisionandcheese In a car or a half ton pickup you should always start in 1st. However, in a semi, if you have a load on, you're good to start anywhere between 1 and 3, and shift up by 2 or 3 gears at a time. I say half ton pickup because in a 3 quarter ton you probably have a granny gear, which means its geared lower and you can start in second, and when the vehicle is rolling, you can't shift down in to 1st gear (granny gear)

Of course, it's not good for clutch to pull away in higher gears than 1th, I was only do it as a joke with friends , really I thought it would just stall. Sometime however, the synchromesh(?) for 3th gear is so bad in my car, that I'll go straight from 2th to 4th (Only usually on downhill). There's only 4 gears though, no overdrive so 2th and 4th are far apart I guess ?, so that probably isn't great, although getting it into 3th is just sometime impossible.

Dan, lol.. in a truck with a shit ton of gears, normally without load it's fine to start in a higher gear, say 5th. The really low gears are only when you have a lot of weight and are moving uphill etc. Also, most modern manual transmission trucks and cars are non-sequential, meaning it's also fine to skip gears. Normally, you only follow the pattern to maintain the engine in the power band, where the most torque for acceleration is available. But, again unloaded you are fine to skip gears as well. Hilarious roadtrip video as always!

@@KurosakiYukigo cars work more or less the same way, it's just less of a concern when your vehicle is comparatively light like a normal passenger vehicle. For most cars, the RPM goes up in a gear, and the transmission shift up to the next gear. In trucks, which gear you choose, the gear you shift into, and when you shift matter. The heaviest loads require loads of power just to get it up to lower speeds, nevermind on a highway. Light loads, or no trailer at all, means you need less of that low-gear power to move the thing. Gears dont decide how much speed you have, they decide how hard you're trying to make the wheels go. A truck with no trailer might be able to start on a higher gear, or skip gears when shifting because it's not as hard to make it go.

I've never had a driving lesson and I'm 30. It makes sense that people like us are uncommon in America, but in places like England and here in New Zealand, we don't have to travel a lot, and we have fairly decent public transport when we do have to travel. I'm not going to waste money on a car when there are inexpensive alternatives... or the really, really cheap alternative of just... not going out.

FUN FACT - It's very unusual for a truck to have 12 straight gears. The common thing is to have a set of low and high (or even low-medium-high) gears, just like a bicycle. If you are driving unloaded (like Dan did) you should be able to drive on the longer gears all day. The double or triple set of gears helps you find the exact gear for each moment, which can be really fucking useful. While Dakar19 ain't exactly a great game by itself, the way the trucks' gears work is more than fine.

Also, you don't need to go through every single gear, you can set off in 2nd, jump to 4, then to 6, then to 8. 1 is for starting uphill, 3 is for starting downhill, 5 is needed if you're climbing and gaining speed

Clutch in when stopping, clutch out just as you press the gas to get moving again. Unless you are in neutral, if you don't have the clutch in when slowing down, your vehicle will stall. That's why the engine kept turning off whenever you came to a stop.

I looked on the steam page and i’m afraid i can’t find anything on it that allows it to have VR as well but i do guess you can play this on Oculus and Vive

@@WinterDutchie It doesn't say it supports VR but you have to right click the game, go into properties>betas and opt into the Oculus version of the game. Then go to the general tab, click "Set Launch Options..." and add -oculus for Rift or -openvr for other headsets.

The bit that was Russia was Kaliningrad, it's an exclave between Poland and Lithuania, used to be a German town but it was given to the Soviets after WW2 and Germany sort of wants it back, but isn't making a big deal of it. It's really important for Russia because it's the only port they have on the European side of the country that remains ice-free all year round other than their Black Sea ports.
