Asia the coating on the black blades gets stuck in wood when you do bushcrafting. I assume they send a polished blade because it performs better. If you run that ESEE knife doing work in the woods, and then go home and strip the coating and do it again… you will feel the difference. Think friction. The coating is rubbing against the wood. Polished in my experience is always smoother with woodwork

I have an ESEE 6 and when I stripped the finish off the blade and forced a patina it was so much smoother to use.

why 'beat' it up - just use it as you would normally use it... each to their own of course.

I agree but knife companies will send me a knife and tell me to beat it up to show its strength. But sometimes knives are too nice for me to do that
