It's really about the battle of kursk the biggest tank battle to ever take place look up the statistics it's absolutely nutty how much armor was put on the battlefield.

Kursk actually wasn’t the largest tank battle in history because Kursk wasn’t a single battle it was a whole operation the real largest tank battle was the battle of Brody

I couldn't agree more. I saw them live in Virginia a couple years ago and they were great. Unfortunately it was a shorter set since they weren't a headliner but they honestly had a bigger crowd than a lot of the actual headliners did. The look on Joakim's face when he realized that this massive crowd knew the lyrics to The Last Stand word for word was amazing. I really hope they come back to one of the festivals around here soon.

Sabaton had Final Countdown playing as a literal countdown song for the audience in the venue before they started their shows for YEARS, though they've stopped since (forgot what you call that kind of song). They had permission from Europe to use slightly shortened version. More importantly, Joakim has said that the Final Countdown was one of those songs that really impressed him "one of those big songs" when he first heard it "when it was new". He was born 1980 and the song came out originally in 1986, so he would have been 5-6 years old propably (possibly few years older if he didn't hear it "new" new, but under 10 definitely) Europe IS likely one of his musical inspirations among other classic 80´s bands + they are swedish too.

There was no turning back, because the fate of whole USSR was decided. Not because "evil soviet KGB" were shooting in soldier's backs. This cliche were born in 1960s and got permanent because of the film "Enemy at the Gates".

You were right about the battle of kursk, but not quite about the "No step back" order that you referenced. At the point of the battle of kursk germany had lost its strategical initiative. Hitler ordered one last armored mass attack in order to break the russian lines and regain the initiative, which if it fails would completely destroy operational command on that part of the front due to a lack of armored units. Therefore there was no "going back" from this attack, because after the armored units have engaged once, they either had to win or be destroyed
@Azraeltheangelofdeath

"Not One Step Back" refers to Order No. 227 one of two soviet orders regarding the policy of discipline, No. 227 specifically created Penal Batallions as well as the infamous blocking detachments who were gundown any soldier that fled in the face of the enemy, by the time of their disbandment in October of 42' three months after the order was given these blocking detachments resulted in the death of over a thousand Penal soldiers, though this order wasn't as bad as the lesser known order No. 270 which basically stated that all soldiers regardless of rank must fight to the death in the face of encirclement or destruction and anyone caught trying to surrender would be considered not only a deserter but a traitor, this would also apply to the soldiers entire family

Sabaton nice, alway bringing the quality reactions. Final Countdown Europe? I mean they are both Swedish so there is that connection. I highly recommend their historical song videos on the channel "Sabaton History" where they usually have a bit of backround on what they are singing about, good examples Night Witches ( Russian all female night bomber regiment 588th WWII) White Death (Deadliest Sniper in History, Finish Witner War WWII), 82nd All the Way (American Soldier a Private First class and his 16 men who captured 135 german soldiers WWI) , Ghost Divison ( The 7th Panzer divison AKA Ghost Divison, who was nicknamed such because they moved so fast that their own command couldn't even tell where they were let alone their enemies WWII), Would also recommend the Carolus Rex Album it's pretty fire.

The battle for kursk if im remembering correctly was a two pronged operation to cut off the kursk bulge and all the russian soldiers inside it. It split into four differnt battles. The battle for Prokhorovka was the largest and bloodiest one. (Watch Greatest Tank Battles: The battle of Kursk Northern and Southern front. It depicts it pretty well. Has tankers from both sides describing what kinda of hell they went through in those battles.)

"There's no turning back" - means that the balance of war has changed and Nazis could not take the initiative back. The 227 order is often misunderstood, a guy in comments has already explained it 😁

I think what you're thinking of ~4:15 was Order No. 277 from July 28, 2942. The order formed "penal battalions" of troops and command staff who were caught trying to retreat or surrender without orders from high command with the goal of placing them on the most dangerous parts of the front to "redeem their sins by blood." The order also formed so-called "blocking battalions" that were placed behind the penal battalions and instructed to execute any troops that attempted to retreat or surrender without being commanded to do so. This led to the order being commonly referred to as the "Not One Step Back" policy. The relevant text of the order (not my translation as I don't speak Orc): The Supreme Command of the Red Army Orders: 1. The military Councils of the fronts and first of all front commanders should: a) In all circumstances decisively eradicate retreat attitude in the troops and with an iron hand prevent propaganda that we can and should continue the retreat to the east, and this retreat will not be harmful to us; b) In all circumstances remove from offices and send to Stavka for court-martial those army commanders who allowed their troops to retreat at will, without authorization by the Front command; c) Form within each Front 1 to 3 (depending on the situation) penal battalions (800 personnel), where commanding, senior commanders and political officers of corresponding ranks from all services, who have broken discipline due to cowardice or instability, should be sent. These battalions should be put on the more difficult sections of a Front, thus giving them an opportunity to redeem their crimes against the Motherland by blood. 2. The Military Councils of armies and first of all army commanders should: a) In all circumstances remove from offices corps and army commanders and commissars, who have allowed their troops to retreat at will without authorization by the army command, and send them to the Military Councils of the Fronts for court-martial; b) Form 3 to 5 well-armed guards units, deploy them in the rear of unstable divisions and oblige them to execute panic-mongers and cowards at site in case of panic and chaotic retreat, thus giving faithful soldiers a chance to do their duty before the Motherland; c) Form 5 to 10 (depending on the situation) penal companies, where soldiers and NCOs, who have broken discipline due to cowardice or instability, should be sent. These units should be deployed at the most difficult sectors of the front, thus giving their soldiers an opportunity to redeem their crimes against the Motherland by blood. 3. Corps and division commanders and commissars should: a) In all circumstances remove from offices regiment and battalion commanders and commissars who allowed their troops to retreat at will without authorization from divisional or corps command, deprive them of their military decorations and send them to the Military Councils of fronts for court-martial; b) Provide all possible help and support to the guards units of the army in their work of strengthening discipline and order in the units. This order is to be read aloud in all companies, troops, batteries, squadrons, teams and staffs. People’s Commissar for Defense, I. Stalin

It's crazy that if Hitler wasn't such a crazy guy and had listened to his generals, much worse would have happened. Because the Germans were only defeated in Russia because Hitler was stupid and the Russian winter could hit them so hard. It's just crazy how lucky an event like this is. Because if Hitler had listened to his generals, much worse would have happened in the end. As a German, I am very glad that Nazi Germany was defeated. Because they weren't real Germans. We deal with it so extremely here in Germany. In the end you know it was a mourning game on both sides. In the end there was only one devil Hitler and his Nazi party everyone else was broken and had to follow so they could eat get drink or if you didn't fight for the fatherland you were shot.
