Great job with the articulated arm on the grinder guard Max. I blew up a cup wheel at college back in the 1970's on a Wadkin t&c grinder. BANG. It was like a hand grenade. Max, at The Swan Valley Machine Shop “Congratulations” 10,000 human beings are subscribed to your Channel, I am sure it is just the beginning because you are doing good quality work as a machinist. And I like the new arrangement of the machines, it seem to be giving much more covenant room and as well the Horizontal Boring Mill now is at center stage, I even thought I heard the HBM look up from its critical care iron long and whisper “Thanks.” The new building is looking great, and with the move completed you all can start getting back to a new normal. Thank for all the time you spend making our day a little more enjoyable. PS I think a good way to end your videos is- “Thanks, for following along, till the next time”

Hi Max, unique gear profile on that pinion. Waiting with interest on the gear cutting operation. My lathe graduations on the carriage handle are only true to 12.5 mm, going further missing 2 graduations. You cannot count the turns for large distance, will result in a ratio error. DRO now solves the problem.

Congratulations Max, you deserve it. Your guard worries me, I have had a wheel slightly smaller than yours explode, it was covered by a 10 mm thick cast in close fitting guard which shattered. I surmise that a piece of the wheel wedged itself between the wheel and the guard and broke the guard. Pieces pf the wheel broke the frame of my safety glasses and I ended with a face full of shrapnel and pieces of wheel in the left eye and grit in the right eye. Not a happy experience. I was alone at the time and had to shut everything down and self administer first aid by feel. The important lessons from the experience are 1. The kinetic energy of an exploding wheel can smash a 10 mm thick cast iron guard and still have enough left over to ruin your day. 2. Even with a guard in place and appropriate PPE NEVER stand in the firing line of a grinding wheel. I would make the guard from a thicker piece of steel or add a re enforcing strip around the outer edge or both.

10,000 subs! 👍 Well deserved Max, congratulations. With that JFMT lathe pinion gear, for the undercut at the bottom of the groove, could you not maybe drill the bottoms out on a bolt circle on the dividing head mounted vertically with a chuck - before you then cut the teeth with the cutter? That might maybe save all the tarradiddle offsetting the cutter to achieve the undercut afterwards? Just a suggestion, as you well know, I don’t know my @rse from my elbow when it comes to this kinda machining mullarky, but that was the random thought going through my head while you were explaining it.

Congratulations on your move. We’re in the same house for 38 years now. I’d love to get a bigger one with more room for my shops and my audio/video equipment. The horrors of moving is a deterrent. I have to say that just maybe you overthought that guard. You’ve given it enough range of movement to turn it into a robotic arm. I have a question for you. Over the decades I’ve always bought well known named tool holders for my lathes but I’ve been wondering if those cheap ones you see in Amazon or eBay are decent enough to bother with. I hate to say it but when a tool holder is the same price as a good insert, it’s a temptation.
@swanvalleymachineshop Жыл бұрын
