Is it possible that particularly brave or effective guardsmen could become members of the legion of the damned? I mean they do say that guardsmen's souls go to the emperor after they die, so perhaps the good ones get admired by the emperor and he turns their soul into the deamon-I mean space marine they were always meant to be

I don't really see that happen. In my personal view, all Space Marines have this reaaaally small glimpse of 'supernatural power' in them. Every Primarch had supernatural powers, based on the 'secrets' the Emperor learned from the Dark Powers. This explains Raven Guard-Marines sharing the 'invisible-talent', the 'black rage' and other talents. I think this may be connected in some of the becoming LOTD. HOWEVER 'normal' humans can become something more in their own reight, for example the Sororita-Living Saints (they are not gene-altered, so....)
@KalashVodka175
@KalashVodka175 3 жыл бұрын
Nope. But my headcanon is that the guards have something similar to the Legion of the damned, but instead of Space marines specters its an event that takes place on a battlefield: for several hours, the bodies of dead guardsmens keeps rising up despite grievous injuries or even despite complete death, as a tidal wave of undying soldiers, like plague zombies but pure of mind and not rotten, firing lasguns and marching in the name of the Emperor for even in death duty will not end

Leaning way more towards the lieutenant on this one. One of the things Ive always loathed about the Comissars is they don't think outside the box. The guardsmen have no plan beyond breaking the wall without consideration for whats beyond that, just zerg rushing as usual. Personally id look into getting one brick removed first instead of breaking the entire wall and then figuring out if a light stealth approach may be better. That way the orks don't notice a few missing humies and a relief force can be sent while gathering more information.

The commissar in this story is quite lenient compared to most. You're average commissar, upon capture, would most likely execute everyone in the room and them themself for the treasonous crime of falling into enemy custody. The Emperor protects. BLAM!
@timkats6635
@timkats6635 3 жыл бұрын
I think thats the overly grim image commissars have, as long as he does not fear the guardsmen being swayed to fight for the enemy, they will remain alive to spend their lives more costly in the emperors name. Be it gathering intelligence before breaking free, or simply sabotage if they manage to break free. Prisoners also require resources to watch, at least one more enemy that needs to be on guard duty - meaning one less with sleep or one less watching the frontline for a friendly attack. However, this only matters if the guardsman knows nothing that could disadvantage the guard if it was to fall into enemy hands.

Not denying that at all mate. Yes most Orks will just butcher any humans that might surrender my point is human guardsmen surrender quite a lot if you read through the Guard lore. The Dark Eldar take whole regiments prisoner, a lot of chaos guard are captured then converted (read iron warriors novels for that), even Necrons take slaves. So come to think about it the guard get taken prisoner on mass all the time it’s just guard regiments like the Catachens, Death Korp of Kreig and to a lesser extent Cadians that have the plot armour not to

In the military if you're captured you can only give them rank name number and basically hold out long enough so the higher ups can change all the plans etc. So even if you break the enemy is working with old information that's changed anyway, and it is your duty to try and escape whenever you get the chance

Rho, me owd mucker. You need to read some of the commisar Cain novels or Anarch from the ghosts series. In the former the orcs invasion of Perlia do take slaves and that is not an isolated example and in the latter a guardsman who could give Marbo a run for his money takes on a cultists muster point. Being taken captive is remarkably easy considering in the 40k universe as unaugmented humans are quite squishy and not overly robust so being injured and knocked unconscious is easily accomplished.

It depends on the regiment and the writer. @Butonz1
@Butonz1 3 жыл бұрын
This is correct. Though they march with the units they are attached to, no officer of any rank can technically order a commissar to do anything. This is important because a Commissar's right to order summary execution extends to officers as well as the rank and file, as this story alludes.

As a Guardsman the Orks might narrowly beat out the other factions in terms of being your captors for one simple reason: whatever they plan to do with you will is more likely to kill you quickly, whether the Orks intend it to or not. Orks are actually pretty good about keeping their human slaves in good enough shape. Work them a lot, sure, but are pretty cunning when it comes to not pushing too far. And violence is unlikely to come from them because the Orks would find it incredibly boring fighting mere squishy humies that aren't in an army or decently armed. Heck, usually Orks flat out ignore non-combatants and just focus on killing soldiers and looting everything they can. Fighting a WAAAGH!!! is less of a defense against a murder spree and more a defense against a house robber. Heck, Orks don't really wage "war" as we understand it. They go pillaging and having fun fighting anyone willing to fight. Anyone not willing to fight they try to provoke but if that fails then they get bored and leave with their loot, their victims more or less unharmed.

@@midgetydeath for the sake of the trillions of regular people trying to live in the 40K universe I hope you are right. The Orks that hit Rynn's World for example were all to happy to slaughter the peaceful farmers of that planet.

@@Lmolina90 That's because everyone is brainwashed into being a fanatical horde frothing at the mouth at the sight of aliens. It's pretty normal in 40k. Part of what makes Hive Worlds so hard to invade, for example, is that everyone and their kitchen sink will attack alien invaders in a screaming frenzy. It's rare to find survivors of Ork attacks or Ork slaves because it's rare for people not to throw themselves at the aliens. That, and that the Orks do have to cause damage and kill people to try and get a violent reaction. If that fails, they get bored and ragequit. This is, I think, the reason why Orks didn't overrun the galaxy during or any time before the Age of Strife (remember that the Eldar were pretty crushed several times in their history, yet the Orks didn't come running). Simply that no one was willing to perform human wave suicide attacks on them so they found everyone boring, which limited their reproduction through war and heavily restricted their interest in expanding. Until the Imperium came along and gave them all the war they could ever want.
@Lmolina90

@@midgetydeath That is one of the darker parts of humanity in 40K. The "xeno=bad" and the "if you don't try to kill them then you are a traitor" mentality gives the Orks all the war they could ever want. I'm sure that Rynn's world was a bit of an exception. An agri world without hive cities. Normally, the Crimson Fists space marines there would be plenty of fun but they took huge casualties from a malfunctioning planetary defense missile that leveled their headquarters before the Orks even hit the ground. Plus the Orks were led by a guy with the title of "Arch Arsonist" to live up to.

It seems like orks take prisoners when the grots are running low. They want teeth, forced labor and snacks. If the orks are taking prisoners, they're losing. There is a background story to Commissar Yarrick where he gets captured by orks as child and makes and escape with a psyker boy. Yarrick is the only survivor and is recommended to the Commissariat for his actions.

Maybe the best Xenos to be imprisoned by would be craft world Eldar. It all depends on the details. They want some change in the future that they can see would happen if they took prisoners instead of killing people. And that change probably would mean they need us alive and to get a decent opinion of them. And they have one advantage over Tau, they could also figure out how to get us back to humanity alive to cause a change they want.

Let's go down the list: *Tyranid:* Turned into Hybrid, fate worse than death. *Dark Eldar:* Fate much, MUCH worse than death. *Eldar:* Often nice, surprisingly, as their prisoners are usually civilians relocated to off an Eldar world, or Rogue Traders kept for a bit and then released. In some rare cases, people might be kept on Craft Worlds indefinitely. *Orks:* Brutal and short lives, usually. As with everything Orky though, you can expect some very weird exceptions, like if Orky Hammer needs an audience for his 326 Decibel concert. *Tau:* Also depends, as one might be sterilized and slowly worked to death in a secret concentration camp, or treated surprisingly well, if they're trying to 'flip' you. *Chaos:* See "Dark Eldar" *Astartes/Guard:* An interesting case, since ordinary soldiers may have zero idea their governor is rebelling. If the Astartes believe this to be the case, prisoners may be treated quite well, as they are readied to be turned against the actual traitors. Full on traitor prisoners can look forward to the Penal Legion life style. *Necron:* Seemingly no consistency, as some prisoners are allowed to leave their planet largely unmolested, while most are interrogated and killed (presumably.) Then there's that one guy who takes prisoners on as guests while his servants quietly kill you off because their lord is actually just bonkers.

The Necrons & Tyranids don't take prisoners unless you count a certain eclectic Necron lords collection. Orks, Aldari, Dark Eldar and Tau all take prisoners and obviously Chaos as they use them to fuel the rituals. Tau and Aldari would be the best to be a prisoner of. Ork, Dark Eldar and Chaos not so much.

I don't find it weird at all. Orks regularly take prisoners for food or labor (and then food). The only spanner in that belt is that the kind of prisoners Orks usually take are non-coms. I would never allow a filthy Xeno to take my prisoner as my faith in the God-Emperor is clad in adamantium. But I'd say Eldar (NOT DARK NOT DARK NOT DARK) or T'au.

Orks taking prisoners isn't all that surprising. Between using prisoners as food, slave labor, or if their War Boss has a flair for the dramatic gladiators in fight pits. Free Booters would also probably try to ransom high ranking Imperial Officers and the like. As for the xeno races that's the most likely to try and take you captive instead of just killing you... I'm torn between the Dark Eldar and the Tau. Of course the Craftworld Eldar and even the Necrons have also been known to take Imperial prisoners when the plot deman- I mean the situation calls for it. I also don't believe for a second that guardsman are told to fight to the death in every engagement. Falling back to fortified positions and even general retreats still happen (there is no glory in pointless defeat after all). Not to mention all the times they'll find themselves wrapped up in some local conflict between two loyal Imperial factions (even Space Marine chapters get caught up in those) and I'm pretty sure prisoners would be taken by both sides until the conflict is resolved. It's a lot more nuanced than people think I'd wager.

Tau would probably be best case scenario, just about everyone else would suck. Necron, wouldn't take prisoners unless you have plot armor, Nids no, Dark eldar rape puppets, Eldar wouldn't bother with prisoners, Chaos would suck but specifics vary with their god, any of the Imperial factions would just convert or kill you. Every time the orks take prisoners, they make terrible jailors so you have a half decent chance to escape.
