I think the reasons you didn't like recoil in Pavlov, and Boneworks are the same reasons I like it. It's much closer to irl. I know you haven't fired real weapons, but automatic fire is often unwieldy. The gun will jump around vertically as well has horizontally. That's just part of it. If anything, I think all these games are much too forgiving with handguns. The reloading and handing you are praising Alyx for is in Boneworks and done just as well, if not better. Also, teacupping a pistol is terrible for accuracy and followup shots. I will agree with you completely on the issues with mag changes in Boneworks. I found that bringing the mag near the grip rather than the bottom worked best. That or just opening the quick menu and selecting eject. Just a button then flick up. I can see where you're coming from wanting things to be more simple and streamlined for newer players. The problem is when they get used to that, they don't know what to do when the gunplay requires any skill.... Also, there is the fact that most people coming to vr are looking for something more simulated and closer to reality.

That said, boneworks was one of the first games to try to be an actual *game* with a full campaign and such for vr, rather than just a sandbox like H3 focusing only on guns, or a pvp shooter also focusing only on guns, so it makes total sense that this wasnt one of the best features. Boneworks just... felt like Ford, the character, was simply unfamiliar with guns - it felt like it was made to be awkward. which makes sense since hes like a hacker it guy, not an action hero, so i just took it as a bit of roleplay and rolled on along.

2:12 every single gun in H3VR has recoil, but the strength of it depends on many things. The bullet calibre, barrel length, whether or not you're using a stock, whether or not you're using a bipod, and whether or not you're two-handing the gun. All firearms can be two-handed by either holding a secondary grip point on the gun with your offhand, or by holding your offhand close to your firing hand. The reason why it might feel like H3VR has no recoil is because it is all realistically simulated every time you fire the gun, whereas games like Onward and Pavlov will exaggerate the recoil to make it more balanced for multiplayer.
@steven.26022 жыл бұрын
Also I think the test is fairly inaccurate since he only tested the guns at close range. it makes sense that he would come to the conclusion that most of these games have "no recoil" when you're are within a few feet/meters of your target. at that point, recoil doesn't really matter that much, if at all-- Even in real life, mind you. I've played a lot of these games and I think the only one that Im confident has "no recoil" is HL:A. games like Onward, Contractors, zero caliber and H3VR all have discernible recoil when you're engaging an enemy at longer ranges, forcing you to slow your shots.
@steven.26022 жыл бұрын
And one last thing worth mentioning: I think it feels like H3VR has less "recoil" than other games is because calling it "recoil" is a bit misleading since it refers to the amount of force going back into your body. I think the term that should be used should be "Kick" or "flip," which both refer to how far the gun's muzzle rises when you shoot it. Since H3VR simulates the fact that guns IRL will almost always have more "recoil" than "kick," it's gonna feel ingame like H3 will have less recoil when players only really notice 30-50% of the equation. If the game could accurately simulate the recoil of an M855a1 moving at roughly three times the speed of sound, then I guarantee you recoil in the game would be much more noticeable than it is currently.

One nice feature H3VR has added since this video came out (I think) is the ability to stabilize two-handed weapons for long-distance precision. By holding the trigger of the forward hand, the movements are dampened, which all but eliminates the "jittery" motion that's so easy to get when using a scoped weapon for engagement at long distances.

Fun fact about H3VR the dev has done several trips to find out how the recoil feels for different guns. Also the lethality of the guns in H3VR is somewhat realistic. You can kill most enemys with 1 shot to the head if they are unarmoured however that takes into account that the enemy can bleed to death. If you want a reliable 1 shot kill on an unarmoured enemy 12 gauge tends to gib one the links resulting in an instant kill.

I loved the video! Do you plan on making one for Melee? I think it would be pretty epic comparing stuff like Gorn, Blade and Sorcery, Boneworks and Hellsplit. Just a few things I noticed while watching: You can two-hand pistols in H3VR, you just don't need to grab onto them - the recoil will be reduced if your offhand is close enough to the weapon. Some pistols with faster firerate will have more noticeable recoil, especially burst or full-auto pistols. Also regarding your comment at 5:00, the damage in H3VR is mostly calculated by caliber and armor. Some hot dogs have a ton of armor especially on their body - using a 1911 you will pretty much always get a one-shot kill to the head on exposed sosig, even 9mm guns can get one-shots to the head. Most battle-rifles will instantly explode a sosig segment when shot considering the large caliber. You seem to be showing gameplay of the ancient Legacy Take and Hold mode which has been long deprecated, I highly recommend checking out the current one. To be honest, I'd prefer if we had humanoid enemies in H3VR instead of sosigs as they tend to literally flop around and move pretty unrealistically, which makes it really annoying with their nearly hitscan weapons and godlike accuracy (especially so when there's one of you and 8 of them). H3VR also allows you to touch/press the bolt release on weapons such as the M4 or SCAR-H. I also saw you struggling to try and toggle the fire selector on that SCAR-H in H3VR, you should do the tutorial map as it tells you how to do this (with the thumbstick, for some reason only some weapons allow you to change fire mode with the offhand controller). You can eject magazines in Boneworks in one of three ways, one of which really obscure and "secret"; 1) Holding a magazine close to the weapon - the original mag will fall out (as you showed) 2) Opening the inventory and selecting "eject mag" 3) Holding a new magazine in your offhand and 'flicking' the weapon like John Wick will eject the mag (this method is hard to discover out unless you're told it's in the game) Whacking the mag out the M4 isn't possible in real life, but if you press the mag release (with your grip hand) the mag will fall out or become looser in which case it can be knocked out - not sure if this is animated in-game but I doubt it. Personally I find Half Life Alyx extremely boring and the fact there are only three generic weapons only adds to this. The game *looks* extremely good and nice, but I find it a chore to play. I think the reload animations are nice but maybe a tad overdone. I also personally dislike the 'ammo over the shoulder' thing in Half Life Alyx, I'm just more used to grabbing mags from my sides or on my chest but of course this is a very minor thing - I think it's pretty great for accessibility considering most people play bow&arrow games when they first get into VR.

On PSVR we don't have a lot of games with realistic weapons handling. I find Gunclub VR does a good job, allowing various real world efficiencies for reloading like hitting the bolt release button, keeping a round in the chamber when reloading pistols to avoid having to rack the slide, loading a shell into the chamber before loading via the lower port (dont know the proper name for it) for shotguns. Fun stuff.

About H3VR. *ALL* guns have different types of bullets and, if I remember correctly, different variations of ammo (AP, +P, FMJ, etc.) All guns preform differently, and all guns deal different amounts of damage depending on the bullet in the chamber. Obviously a .22lr isn't going to be the same as a .45ACP or .50 AE. Same with .22 vs. 5.56x45 and 7.62x39. Each gun will also have different recoil depending on the bullet, as well as the attachments on it. (I'm not quite sure what attachments you can put on it, but you should be able to put on recoil compensators and grips on weapons.) There's my 10 cents (if I used the saying properly), and I'm headed out.
@danieltreshner49552 жыл бұрын
There's a third way to rack the pistol's slide in Half Life: Alyx, in which you press a button on your controller to hit the slide's quick release (don't recall the proper term, but it's a lever on the right side of the gun that, well, releases the slide when it's cocked back)
@testname44642 жыл бұрын
H3VR's damage and recoil mechanics vary wildly depending on what you're shooting. A .22 pistol will deal little damage to a sosig, versus a .50 anti-materiel rifle, which will eviscerate any sosig, same with recoil. Again a .22 will have very light recoil, basically none, while a .50 will cause the entire front of the gun to jerk upwards
@notgiven38016 күн бұрын
Games with more realistic guns you can press a button and the slide will fall back if you just emptied a magazine but you will have to pull the slide if it is the first magazine like many real slides, this is both faster and more immersive for anyone that has used them.

Some of the points about H3VR could've been talked about differently. TL:DR H3VR is a very realistic gun simulator with the main focus of the game being true to life controls and physics. Some of the points almost forget this when brought up. And also I'm an H3VR fanboy so it got me a bit worked up, sorry about that. For example, since H3VR is a gun simulator, it uses realistic ballistics and weapon controls so time to kill depends on what ammo or weapon you're using (It also has newer 'sosig' enemies which are more accurate to actual human beings rather than the older robot hotdog models.) Pistols can be handled with two hands by bringing your off hand closer without having to physically press a button or having your in-game hand taken away from you - this is a very good design decision for VR in my opinion. Switching fire modes in H3VR is done via the controller as trying to press a fire selector switch in game would cause your controllers to collide. This isn't true for some weapons so you will have to press them with your off hand (For example the KRISS Vector.) Dropping magazines (And all magazine handling in general) is done in a realistic fashion - AKs are able to drop a mag by hitting it's mag release with another object, where other guns require you to press the button on your controller or grab the magazine. The same goes for grenades, as in real life you have to pull a pin before you can throw a grenade. With the holstering, H3VR gives you multiple types of holsters you can choose between in the settings. They simulate various types of rigs and belts which would probably obscure your vision in real life as well, albeit at a lesser degree as in VR since (I would assume) the vest has to be further away for ease of use. I think contractors has the most realistic vest design as you can see the actual vest on your character with the holster points being on it. The video however was very well done. Definitely deserve a lot more subscribers than you currently have, keep up the amazing work!

@spreademu12182 жыл бұрын
Just an fyi, recoil isn’t how much spread there is. It’s how much the gun comes back and up into your shoulder or palm. Pavlov’s recoil is by far the most realistic. Full auto really has a lot of muzzle rise and also puts a lot into your shoulder. This is a pretty good video though.

Someone may have said this already, but the point of putting two hands on your pistol in Alyx isn't for recoil, it's to slow the "jitteriness" of holding the gun. Motion smoothing is applied to your aim when holding the pistol with two hands. Not super useful for most cases IMO, but that's what it does. Also, you can eject a magazine in Boneworks, but it's janky. You need to go into your context menu, there's an eject magazine option, but it takes a few seconds to do that way so it's kind of useless.

h3vr has an unseen back holster and customizable holsters in general. also, your single-handed weapons lose recoil when a second hand is in proximity to the grip.

fun fact: putting your hand near your pistol in h3vr as if you were two-handing it actually does mitigate recoil somewhat

I agree with with taking advantage of VRs limitations by creating interesting and creative guns that are designed around VR controls. I would love if there was multi-player that did this, that would be sick

Great video! One very important thing that Contractors do, that not any other VR game(I think..) do is keeping your hand on the mag you inserted until you let go(two handed weapons). Then the hand stays there JUST like in real life. I don't know why other devs don't do that. HL: Alyx also does that to a certain extent with the pistol, you hold the mag in such a way that when you finish the reload your hand is already placed on the gun like you're two handing it. Kind of like IRL. Feels great. I think you missed Lies Beneath here it has an interesting reload mechanic without really having any mags. Gun Club VR is also a good example of Physics based gun simulator but with hands 😊 But as you said, as long as the game have some type of interactivity with the weapon traditional or untraditional in the reload department, it's doing something right.

I liked this video a lot, as well as your one on melee combat, and the more recent one on VR game design. Lots of great info and ideas. As a suggestion though, when you're discussing a topic I'd prefer it if you just highlighted maybe 2 or 3 games that took different approaches, rather than running through all of the more popular VR games for each topic. Just have an example that does something well, one that does it poorly by contrast, and maybe explore one or two that just do it different. I think the video would flow better this way and be more focused and instructive/illuminating. If you wanted to explore all of those games in greater detail, you could do a specific breakdown of each one's mechanics in its own video, even giving it a personal grade for how satisfying its weapon handling is. I'm fairly new to the channel, and I recognize this is an older video so apologies if you've already done some of this stuff. Keep up the great work!

Its difficult to get that balance, ever time I make these sorts of videos people ask why I didnt include this game or that game. VR game design is so deep and complex there is no way to really cover it in a way thats going to be perfect.
@GreyMatterShades Жыл бұрын
@@virtualinsider Very true! I could see that being frustrating. You do a great job of breaking down the mechanics though! I'd love to see game specific deep dives where you talk about all the little things that a popular game does well, and areas that could be improved upon. Keep up the awesome work!

The hotdogs in the clips from the ttk section for h3vr are not the one used everywhere else in the game and they have a much high health pool. Also saying "the pistol" for most games doesn't make sense boneworks has a pistol that's 2-3 body or 1 to head and it's just as common as the eder 22. Also boneworks has a really good "sitting" inventory that allows you to spawn a set of slots corresponding to your holster points so you can access while sitting or if you struggle with the on-body points. It's a good win-win design

This video Is great timing for me as Im currently working on vr gun mechanics right now!, As a vetran fps gamer & VR gamer , I already know what I want , But its great to hear what others think about how vr games either get it right or wrong and what gun mechanics are the best and most enjoyable. I don like auto snapping and have gone down the HLA path with nice smooth reload insert.

You can actually "two hand" guns im h3vr. When your off hand is close to the weapon, it reduces recoil. That works with other weapons than just pistols as well actually
@marcel87043 жыл бұрын
Can you please elaborate what you mean by "no recoil"? practically all of the guns you shot had recoil so I am not entirely sure what you mean? Also the enemies you showed for H3 are severely outdated by now, try the new take and hold mode some time lol
@Pabular3 жыл бұрын
Some games have animated recoil. But then it moves right back to where you're holding it. Actual recoil makes it where the gun will actually jump back and it won't be exactly where you were holding it.
@marcel87043 жыл бұрын
@@Pabular yes but He said H3 has no recoil even though it definetly has? I mean He basically shot so slowly that the gun had more than enough time to stabilize Back to its original position again

H3vr technically has two handed but it’s hard to tell. If you move your hand to the side of the pistol it will minimize the minimal recoil

There is a sorta jank way you can eject mags in boneworks I found. With a handgun press the inventory button and you'll see an eject mag option. Flick your hand up and release the button and it will eject the mag. Its a little weird at first but can be really satisfying once you get the hang of it.

I want to correct a mistake: H3VR does in fact have a thing for two handing pistols, you just have to bring your other hand closer. also saying that pistols have no recoil in H3VR is a bit of a misnomer as like real life it's completely dependent on the pistol. The pistol used in the video is known to be good for it's low recoil

I don't like how Alyx holds the pistol wrong. But I guess it makes sense, she never got any gun training. But also the gun locks back even if you removed the magazine 1st which is unrealistic.
