Just to say thanks Sam. Cleaned, restored my first loco today following your advice, a Hornby class 6 040 diesel shunter which would not run at all. The interior was literally black with gunk and bits of carpet! It now looks new and runs very well indeed. The only addition was to use a an old model cat trick of cleaning the motor under water with a little detergent. The black gunk that came out was horrific. Dried lubricated again etc. Thanks again.

Hi Bryn, that's great news mate - really glad that worked out well for you, it's amazing how dirty those things get! Blimey, I'm not sure I'd dare submerge one in water... i'd be too scared about corrosion in the future, but submerging in rubbing alcohol could be a good idea! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

For car wheels, you have to spin them with one hand, and wipe them with a q-tip in the other with a cleaning solvent. One idea I had, was to have some sort of track-gauged cleaner rails mounted on a fixture. One rail would remain stationary, while the opposite rail would oscillate (and slide) from end to end. You then mount your freight or passenger car onto the fixture's rails. The oscillating rail action would turn all of the sets of wheels back and forth, making them wipe against the cleaner pads on the rails. You may have to roll the car back and forth at the same time. I would use a variable DC motor, with a connecting rod action attached to the moving-sliding rail. The hardest part is fabricating the cleaner-rails with replaceable cleaning pads. I believe the method would work.
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's what I do too! haha I had an idea similar to that... but you need to find a way to make the pads self-cleaning... it was the mechanism for that which threw me! All the best, Sam :)
@kamilsmodelrailway66926 жыл бұрын
Is it the same way to clean the wheels on the Schools Class like on the non-tender driven locos? Like the D16 Claud Hamilton?

Hi Sam, new to model railwaying so this vid was apt for me. I have 2 types of horby controller; same as yours and a black one with red buttons. I only need one but when it shorts it takes forever to reset so I just plug in the other one! If it does short out is that not designed to protect the motor. Does anyone else make a single controller that is better because it sounds like you don't like them, and if you don't then why should I ?
@squibyadventures61463 жыл бұрын
Hey Sam, I wondering how I could clean my locomotive's wheels without it running?

Sam, when dealing with quartering, do you set to 90° for all locos, even the three cylinder versions? For the model, having these links for the rotation of the driving wheels in the optimal angle (90°) may be better than "thirding" the connecting rods for the loco accuracy. Any thoughts about the need for the model to be accurate compared with mechanical operation of the model?
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, thanks a lot for the interesting comment - as for real life, I honestly don't know whether the quartering would be any different. However, in model form, I've never noticed any model not have 90° quartering - and I'm fairly sure that all the tri-ang ones did too, though I may be wrong! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@tomlawton70877 жыл бұрын
I'm quite comfortable that for a three cylinder engine, the side rods would be at ± 60° or 120°, so that you get six evenly spaced beats (with the centre cylinder producing the other two beats at 120° or 60°).I would expect them to be at 120°, so the three con-rods would be equally spaced around the cycle, even though each cylinder produces two pulses 180° apart and hence provides the six beats. (Note to self, at next chance, take pictures of real loco on both sides when stationary).But for the model, since the connecting rods (different name?) transfer the drive from the (single) driven wheel to the other driving wheels, it may be that quartering provides the best result for the two shaft drive, and nobody actually looks at both sides to check the quartering (or thirding).I suppose inspection of a new model, and a real loco is required next!Anon

Hi Sam - appreciated watching some of your servicing videos particularly the mainline one. I see you are using some foam edge protector as the loco cradle. so which type of model railway makers are better, Hornby or Tri-ang, depends on how it runs, how it will look ect ect

Well it all depends - if you want pure quality and reliability - then Tri-ang is the way to go, although realism can never be a thing for that. Otherwise, Hornby is a pretty good all-rounder, although some of their recent models have been dubious in terms of quality! ;D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

This is how I clean my loco wheels, in the cradle, and it is the best method. However, I used "Goo Gone" to get off the deep grime, then I follow it up with Isopropyl Alcohol. Will the lighter fluid cause any damage to paint or plastic?

cleaning the wheels on a tender-driven loco is a nightmare as the wheels are loose and you have to turn them by hand! :)
@SamsTrains8 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's true - but in some ways slightly easier, since you don't have to worry about powering them!
@miscellaneous.71278 жыл бұрын
true enough! :)

What else can you use instead of lighter fluid? my parents don't trust me with anything flammable because i got a phone call home from school because in science we were using fire so i started setting tissues and paper towels on fire. It was immature but hilarious to everyone in my class
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
I use IPA - though it is still flammable - most good cleaning fluids are unfortunately :( Thanks for watching - Sam :)

@@SamsTrainsok thanks. i dont think hey would mind ipa, lighter fluid dust sunds more dangerous and that puts them off

I have a Hornby Hunt class 4-4-0 with motor in the tender, do cleaning these wheels have a similar setup?
@SamsTrains6 жыл бұрын
Quite similar! What I'd recommend with those is to remove the tender body, and apply power directly to the motor contacts using crocodile leads - it's fairly simple. You'll also want to turn the loco wheels by hand, and clean those too of course! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

For those who can't obtain lighter fluid easily or want a cheaper alternative, in many places you can buy Shellite from your local hardware store which is almost the same. The lighter fluid shown in the video is 98% Shellite plus a couple of additives. For cleaning they are unimportant.
