Just to say thanks Sam. Cleaned, restored my first loco today following your advice, a Hornby class 6 040 diesel shunter which would not run at all. The interior was literally black with gunk and bits of carpet! It now looks new and runs very well indeed. The only addition was to use a an old model cat trick of cleaning the motor under water with a little detergent. The black gunk that came out was horrific. Dried lubricated again etc. Thanks again.

Hi Bryn, that's great news mate - really glad that worked out well for you, it's amazing how dirty those things get! Blimey, I'm not sure I'd dare submerge one in water... i'd be too scared about corrosion in the future, but submerging in rubbing alcohol could be a good idea! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

I have not cleaned the wheels on my HO model railway for about 40 years .I use a product called Inox MP3 to clean/condition the track. The small amount of Inox on the track keeps the wheels clean. i also us it for the pickups and lubrication of bearings.

For those who can't obtain lighter fluid easily or want a cheaper alternative, in many places you can buy Shellite from your local hardware store which is almost the same. The lighter fluid shown in the video is 98% Shellite plus a couple of additives. For cleaning they are unimportant.

For car wheels, you have to spin them with one hand, and wipe them with a q-tip in the other with a cleaning solvent. One idea I had, was to have some sort of track-gauged cleaner rails mounted on a fixture. One rail would remain stationary, while the opposite rail would oscillate (and slide) from end to end. You then mount your freight or passenger car onto the fixture's rails. The oscillating rail action would turn all of the sets of wheels back and forth, making them wipe against the cleaner pads on the rails. You may have to roll the car back and forth at the same time. I would use a variable DC motor, with a connecting rod action attached to the moving-sliding rail. The hardest part is fabricating the cleaner-rails with replaceable cleaning pads. I believe the method would work.
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's what I do too! haha I had an idea similar to that... but you need to find a way to make the pads self-cleaning... it was the mechanism for that which threw me! All the best, Sam :)

@SamsTrains

Thanks very much mate - I've done that for a long time! Yeah lighter fluid is excellent, not sure if better than other alcohols, but it dissolves dirt very very well, and evaporates quickly! It's also very cheap - I pay £1 per bottle! All the best, Sam :)

Hi Sam, new to model railwaying so this vid was apt for me. I have 2 types of horby controller; same as yours and a black one with red buttons. I only need one but when it shorts it takes forever to reset so I just plug in the other one! If it does short out is that not designed to protect the motor. Does anyone else make a single controller that is better because it sounds like you don't like them, and if you don't then why should I ?

This is how I clean my loco wheels, in the cradle, and it is the best method. However, I used "Goo Gone" to get off the deep grime, then I follow it up with Isopropyl Alcohol. Will the lighter fluid cause any damage to paint or plastic?

Absolutely - it's definitely the best way! That sounds good - I've never tried that! No I never had the lighter fluid damage plastic, but I've swapped to Isopropyl alcohol now, because I'd rather breathe that than the lighter fluid ;) Thanks for watching, Sam :)

so which type of model railway makers are better, Hornby or Tri-ang, depends on how it runs, how it will look ect ect
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 6 жыл бұрын
Well it all depends - if you want pure quality and reliability - then Tri-ang is the way to go, although realism can never be a thing for that. Otherwise, Hornby is a pretty good all-rounder, although some of their recent models have been dubious in terms of quality! ;D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Hi Sam, just wondering how you would go about cleaning a dcc locomotive with no tender pickups. Can you link power directly to the motor of a dcc loco to get the wheels spinning for cleaning or will that burn out the dcc chip?. Also a video on cleaning dcc locos would be fantastic because i couldn't find one anywhere using the method you use. Thanks Nathan
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 4 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend temporarily removing the decoder, then fitting a blanking plate or powering the motor directly - it usually works pretty well! Don't power the motor directly with the decoder still plugged in - you might get fireworks ;) Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Quite similar! What I'd recommend with those is to remove the tender body, and apply power directly to the motor contacts using crocodile leads - it's fairly simple. You'll also want to turn the loco wheels by hand, and clean those too of course! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Sam, when dealing with quartering, do you set to 90° for all locos, even the three cylinder versions? For the model, having these links for the rotation of the driving wheels in the optimal angle (90°) may be better than "thirding" the connecting rods for the loco accuracy. Any thoughts about the need for the model to be accurate compared with mechanical operation of the model?
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, thanks a lot for the interesting comment - as for real life, I honestly don't know whether the quartering would be any different. However, in model form, I've never noticed any model not have 90° quartering - and I'm fairly sure that all the tri-ang ones did too, though I may be wrong! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@tomlawton7087
@tomlawton7087 6 жыл бұрын
I'm quite comfortable that for a three cylinder engine, the side rods would be at ± 60° or 120°, so that you get six evenly spaced beats (with the centre cylinder producing the other two beats at 120° or 60°).I would expect them to be at 120°, so the three con-rods would be equally spaced around the cycle, even though each cylinder produces two pulses 180° apart and hence provides the six beats. (Note to self, at next chance, take pictures of real loco on both sides when stationary).But for the model, since the connecting rods (different name?) transfer the drive from the (single) driven wheel to the other driving wheels, it may be that quartering provides the best result for the two shaft drive, and nobody actually looks at both sides to check the quartering (or thirding).I suppose inspection of a new model, and a real loco is required next!Anon

Can you clean it with nail polish remover?
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 6 жыл бұрын
The wheels? Yes you can - not the bodywork though! For bodywork, put squirty soap on an old toothbrush, and scrub it thoroughly but carefully. When you're done, rinse it under fast flowing COLD water, and repeat the process until you're happy! (Dab dry with a towel) Thanks for watching, Sam :)

@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 6 жыл бұрын
You could, but I wouldn't recommend it - you can buy a huge bottle of Isopropyl alcohol from Ebay, pour some into a small bottle, and dip into there - it works out cheaper, and it's way better! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 7 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, what do you mean by 'free'? Are they jammed, or just seized up? Or do you mean removing the motor so that a loco can 'free wheel'? If you let me know, I can do my best to help you out! :D Cheers, Sam :)

Sam'sTrains yeh so if a locos broke you could make it free wheel for example you could couple a free wheel loco infront of another loco it loks like a double header

What else can you use instead of lighter fluid? my parents don't trust me with anything flammable because i got a phone call home from school because in science we were using fire so i started setting tissues and paper towels on fire. It was immature but hilarious to everyone in my class

For those who can't obtain lighter fluid easily or want a cheaper alternative, in many places you can buy Shellite from your local hardware store which is almost the same. The lighter fluid shown in the video is 98% Shellite plus a couple of additives. For cleaning they are unimportant.

Does this wheel clean technique work on the Bachmann Thomas.
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 7 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, yes it should do - the tricky part will be finding a way to power him... maybe if you remove his body, you'll be able to power the motor that way! Otherwise, get someone to hold the contacts against the wheels for you, while you clean them! Good luck! Sam :)
