In this back to basics video, I cover using filler to hide joins in polystyrene (styrofoam) sheets and to fill gaps.

Thank you so much for making this video! I have your book as well, and I'm very fond of your work. I have AMC, a form of Muscular Dystrophy, and your videos help me better understand what I need to do to build model terrain, and how I could do it. For greater confidence alone, it is invaluable. I greatly appreciate these videos you do.

It's great for building up a bit of ground volume as well. Works extremely well for basing and still pretty decently on larger pieces. Stuff's my go-to terrain sculpting medium by now (also because I can't get stuff like sculptamold too easily where I live).

I'm really liking your videos; they've helped me out a lot and even your back-2-basics series has taught me a few tricks I hadn't known of! On the topic of this video though: I've used water-based woodfiller to great effect on both filling in gaps and adding texture to terrain and even for basing my minis; it can chip a little but not nearly as much as has happened to me when using plaster of paris. It comes as a slightly damp and clay-like in texture but you can change the consistency by adding in more water. I do a half woodfiller to water mix (which can get messy!) but allows me to spread it around and begin building up the area and after about 6-10 minutes most of the moisture dries up and the mix becomes firmer but still malleable for more detailed sculpting..

Cheers mate. I love filler, I used for everything from creating a ground texture to concreting buildings, never tried sculpting with it though, I'll have to give it a go :-)

Have you tried using spatulas from a dentist tool supplier? They are actually used for fillings or for work on impressions . They come in various shapes and angles, e.g. a heidemann spatula. They come in quite handy when it comes to filling small gaps or doing intricate work on rocks. Furthermore they are cheap (8€) and quite durable!

Been watching you last year or so; what is watchgullet/washgullet that you keep on mentioning in almost every video? Tried to google it numerous times, I am probably just mishearing. 😂

I bought some DAP Fast N Final spackle and it says you can't touch it with your skin. Does anyone know if this is a precaution or if I just bought the wrong thing?

Sounds like it's got a catalyst in it, go for normal spackle mate or wear a glove

so 2 quid is about 5 bucks, kiddies You can rough it in and use a wet brush to tap it into creases better. a wet paper towel of just a finger can smooth it out.
