I know that this is a silly question, but I have a few pregnant guppies in my tank. One looks like she may only be a week or two away from having her fry. Is there any way to intervene if something like that happens- where they get stuck in the egg? Could you use a small needle to break a small hole in the membrane, to give it a weak spot so when they wiggle they can get out? I know that theyre very tiny, and pretty crammed in there.
@TheDave3335 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching the video. Surgical interventions are risky due to the small size of the "patient." A more simple method, and less risky method is to put the "egg" in a small cup containing tank water and then rapidly swish the egg around in the water. Killifish keepers with similar trouble will put eggs in a small vial of tank water, seal the vial and then put it in their pocket. As they walk around, the vial is constantly shaken and stirred . All of the jostling around can sometimes free the embryo from the egg membrane.

Thanks for the amazing video. I have a fish tank with 4 adult guppies (I think only one male left) 3 Neon tetras (all that are left from 17 that I bought three years ago) 3 yoyo loaches. In all these years I had not seen my guppies giving birth. I just assumed that the yoyos ate all the fry. To my amazement, a couple of weeks ago I noticed a fry. At first I didn't think he would make it beyond few hours. But it's been many days since, and he has grown a lot. The adult guppies are no longer a danger for him, and he spends most of the time near the surface (so the yoyos can't get him either). Yesterday morning I noticed a new very young fry. I was excited about him, but after an hour I couldn't find him any longer. And now after watching this video I find out that they usually give birth to at least 20! do you think they were all eaten? the tank is heavily plantated, so I wonder if some might be hiding there?
@TheDave3334 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks for watching the video. There are several possibilities. . . Since the tank is heavily planted, I am assuming that the fry have plenty of places to hide. (Plants near the surface are the most helpful, because baby guppies like to hide near the surface.) So, the adult guppies are probably not eating them. I'm not sure about the loaches, though they don't seem fast enough to catch guppy fry. If you have a hang-on-back filter the fry might be getting sucked into the filter through the filter intake. If you don't have an intake sponge filter over the intake pipe, then that might be where all of the babies are going. Check the filter reservoir at the back of the tank. Some of the fry may have survived. As a quick fix for the problem, you can put a piece of nylon pantyhose over the intake pipe to keep the fry out of the filter. Here's another possibility you may want to consider. kzbin.info/www/bejne/noutg4uHf8yjock

Hi, thanks for watching the video! Little bobby was very tiny, in fact, 5 of him could fit on a grain of rice. Cutting him out of the egg membrane would have been very risky. @@TheDave333 I knew they were tiny, but didnt really understand the magnitude until I saw the needle tip looking so dull under magnification in the linked video. Regardless, it was interesting to see that we could actually help them out.

Sadly my females only give birth to a handful of babies. Nothing like when I used to keep them years ago and I'd get 40-50 fry. However I haven't witnessed the babies being born in this guppy tank I have now. Perhaps I need to add some live plants, especially floating ones where they can hide. Although I have yet to witness any fry being devoured it would make the babies feel more secure.

Would the premature guppy (the embryo with a heartbeat) be able to grow and survive after birth? Or did it join Bobby in the Big Sky Aquarium?
@TheDave3335 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, that little fish didn't survive either. . :-(

I woke up in the morning and my guppy gave birth apparently because 3 little guppies were hiding in a corner from the rest of my fish ;-; I dont know how much she gave birth to, but the ones that were smart enough to hide were the ones that survived. Im planning to put more plants in so the future fry can hide.

Plants really do make a big difference, especially plants near the surface. . . . Best of luck. :-D

I'm a guppy lover for over 6 years now, and have watched several guppy momma's giving birth. Today I was blessed to see my 1 yr old girl give birth for the first time, and it will always hold a special place in my heart! From what I could see, most of the fry looks very healthy and mom was doing the greatest job. Nature can be crazy but yet so beautiful. Thank you for making this gorgeous video, and my heart goes out to little Bobby. It's always sad when a baby won't make it. I'm glad the fry is doing good though, and your guppy girl did an amazing job! Whishing you and your guppy family many years of health and luck xo
