A hard cold start on the Duramax.

The reason it stumbles before starting is because you waited the extra amount of time. You're actually hurting the truck more than helping it...come on its 2016, not 1984. Key on, wait the 2 seconds for the light to go out, and start the damn thing. Don't wait an extra 30 seconds, don't "cycle" them 6000 times, etc...do it the way the owners manual tells you to. The duramax glow plugs are "smart" controlled and instant-heat. If you turn the key on and sit there, the glow plugs reach their peak temperature, and then the GPCM (glow plug control module) tapers off the amount of voltage to keep them from burning up. Because they are instant heat, the longer they are left "on" before starting, they actually cool down a bit because the GPCM has to be "careful" not to melt them off while you're sitting there wasting your time letting them "cycle". The GPCM isn't a dumb timer and relay like everyone thinks it is, and the glow plugs are not 12volts. They're 4.7v. So stop wasting your time, stop thinking you know what's best for the truck, and operate as GM tells you to operate it. Your glow plugs will last LONGER and the truck will start better...... Key on, wait for the light to go out (2 seconds?), and crank the damn thing.

He is right. I was going to say the same thing. It dont "need" plugged in but it is better for them. You have a plug on the truck, it is just hidden if you dont think you do and the dealer will charge you allot to install it (un hide it). Its on the passenger side near the front of the fuel filter tapped up in the loom. Some of if not all of the newer ones have a ambient temp sensor on the plug which you may like or not like. I cannot remember the temp it will allow your block heater to work but it is colder than I would like. When I am at home and need to leave for work I want to have the engine partially warmed up so I plug in although it dont necessarly need it. In most cases if I had the newer models plug it would be of no use to me but only a couple days a year. I usually use mine when it is below freezing and I have to work. It just makes getting out the door easier. The new model plugs can be cut off and a power cord repair kit can be used to install a new plug. Some people might like it if they dont know what the weather is going to do and they dont want to waste electricity if they dont need to.

If you start the truck CORRECTLY, (the way the owners manual tells you to), an LML will have no trouble (and not stumble like yours did in the video) even in way colder temps than your -5*....I've had mine at -22* and it started better than yours, because I listened to what the truck said was best for it. And yes, your factory remote start DOES account for glow plug warm up time...it just doesn't seem like it because the glow plugs do warm up properly in 2-3 seconds. So feel free to remote start it in cold weather....

First time I ever had my Duramax in cold weather I tried cycling the key in 30* and it was hell to start. Took a total of over a minute of cranking to start. A couple days later it got down to 0* and I just went out and cranked it, waited for maybe a second and it started on the 4th rotation. The engine makes alot more noise in those temps but the turbo sounded really happy lol

Read the manual . Most important thing on a duramax. Cold start. When the light goes out if you know which light that is. Turn the key. Them plugs are done a cold by the time you cranked.

the duramax glow plugs are supposed to be rapid or something which why the glow plug light goes off so quickly on them. For a duramax and that cold i'd cycle at least three times will it help? Probably not buying an L5P next week so we'll see how it does.

Mine starts way better then that at -35C not plugged in. Hmm maybe its cause I just turn the key on and wait for the glow light to turn off and start the damn truck. Its 2017 buddy these diesel engines have come along way in technology. Get with it.

Why are you waiting so long to start it? The glow plug controller only runs the plugs 3-6 seconds,your letting them cool off before firing up. If you want it to start better run 5w40 full synthetic motor oil,like Rotella T6, Mobil Delvac 1, or Chevron Delo 5w40.
