This is the kind of game I want to see more of in the industry. The kind of game that takes elements from other games we love but tweaking, modernising and approaching old ideas in a brand new way that makes the game feel distinct and fresh with its own personality that truly shines. That's why I love Doom 2016 so much, it takes all the elements I love from 90's shooters but turns it all completely on its head in a way that's still true to classic Doom but is an entirely different but amazing beast of its own. A Hat in Time doesn't use nostalgia as its selling point but rather takes that nostalgia and tosses it up in the air in a fireworks display and shows the gaming world that there's SO much more you can do with old ideas that never got old in the first place.

Good Kickstarter games like Undertale and Shovel Knight are still widely discussed today, while mediocre ones like Mighty No. 9 and Yooka-Laylee tend to be forgotten about after a month of being released. I have a feeling A Hat in Time is going to be one of those games that will be talked about for years to come. This game was originally to be released in 2014, but I remember Shigeru Miyamoto once saying that a delayed game is eventually good, while a rushed game is bad forever. Will I get it? Most likely, but I'll have to see how much I have first.

Dude THANK YOU for covering this game. I had never heard of it, but I watch all of your reviews because you are constantly introducing me to new, cool, and unique games I wouldn't of seen otherwise. This looks AMAZING!! I'm in a commitment to not buy games until I'm debt free at the moment (aaand its quite a bit of debt), but this one just leapt to the top of the list of games I'll buy as soon as thats over. Holy COW does this look fun, charming, and right up my ally. Charm is one of my favorite things in games...it can make a bad game a game I absolutely love, just because it has a charm to it. This, by no means, looks like a bad game. It gives me an Okage meets R&C sorta vibe with the humor, abstract character designs, and quality platforming. Damn dude...great video. You're really coming into your own. Every time there is a new Nitro Rad up, I HAVE to watch it as soon as I get some down time. Keep up the fantastic work dude. I'm rootin' for'ya!

Just because it has a cartoony art style does not mean "the graphics are low". This game is pretty visually intensive in some of the areas. There are a lot of particle effects, lighting tricks, depth of field, and other visual flairs. Plus, the levels are pretty big, world 4 in particular. I'm sure the PS4 will be able to run it, but it might not look as good as the PC version. I'll take a steady frame rate over a higher resolution though.

With how good Yungtown was here and the controversy around Jontron being in this, it’s easy to forget the other examples of great voice acting Hard to believe that the Conductor is voiced by Xander Mobus - the same announcer from Smash and the voice of the protagonist from Persona 5 Dude has some range. Now if only they did the reverse and have Yungtown in Persona 6 or Smash 5. This game is fantastic though, I think it’s a great example of why platformers shouldn’t just copy Banjo and Kazooie / because we don’t want a clone, we want an innovative progression of the platform genre by taking from others to create something new and original. I mean, some would say it’s all over the place but I love how different it all is - stealth, Paper MARIO scenario, open world, Floodless levels from Sunshine, etc. I just want more now, either more levels or a sequel which expands on the four levels.

I backed this game late when I found it in 2014. The alpha build that came with it was more than enough to keep me happy even if it only had about a world's worth of levels in it. This is definitely one of the few games in the past few years that I've been legitimately hyped for despite how cynical I am with releases nowadays and I'm sure as hell glad it didn't fail to please. It's just as fun now as it was back then. I am surprised that they changed/removed certain parts though. I remember in the alpha build I played that there was a rocket racing level (as in you're on a rocket and not just the mafia. I can see why they removed it though as the rocket was very hard to control), moustache girl being a lot friendlier and a scene with hat kid getting older.

I finally picked this game up on Steam a few days ago. And I'm ashamed of myself for not getting the game sooner, because it was an absolutely phenomenal experience. I still have yet to touch the challenges in the Seal the Deal DLC just yet, but I'm thinking on waiting to do so until Nyakuza Metro comes out. This is a very charming game, and I highly recommend players who are a fan of platformers to try this out.

Wait they weren't free. I got the switch version when it only had the first DLC, Seal the Deal, in a bundle with the DLC and by the time Nyakuza Metro came to switch, I had to buy that. I purchased the DLC bundle but because the second DLC wasn't there, I had to pay extra, when it should have been free because I purchased the DLC bundle!

I had $50 on PSN and recently re-completed one of my favs Banjo-Kazooie. I was faced with the option of this game and Yooka-Laylee. My die-hard instinct was overcome by the love I felt for this game. SO HAPPY I chose this AMAZING experience! Still love Kazooie Tooie Sunshine and Thousand Year Door*Myfav RPG*, BUT A Hat In Time is seriously EVERYTHING I.I'M looking for in this genre!!!!! I know I’m late, but according to one of the devs, it was part of a scrapped version of the ending. After the final boss, you give one of your time pieces to Mustache Girl and as a result don’t have enough fuel to get home. Years pass before Hat Kid and Mustache Girl run into each other again, and when they finally do, Mustache Girl gives the timepiece back to Hat Kid, as she has completed ridding her island of the mafia.

You say the setup is all there is to the story but then you showcase all the "scenarios." So no, that''s not all there is to the story. It appears to be an anthology of sorts.

I think his point was more that the initial concept is simple, the individual missions are not really part of the main story. Maybe comparable to Spyro 2?

Well, he did kind of misrepresent the story here. *At first* the only thing you know about the story is that you need to get all your time pieces back to get home. Then, in the various chapters, you encounter smaller local stories, like an anthology. And by the end it feels a lot like the big overarching story has developed and become a lot more complex *through* those smaller chapter stories. (Trying not to spoil anything here)

I first played this game after finally playing Psychonauts. Obviously the Milkman conspiracy is my favourite level from that game and the Crows from A Hat In Time really reminded me of the G-Men (undoubtedly a reference) and i loved them
