Angels singing "The praises of the Lamb" then silence and Mark's soft "Mary did you know" = me reduced to a sobbing puddle. They won Christmas

Hey, I'm a Home Fry and I would NEVER argue with you about your heartfelt opinion. I seem to recall that Mark Lowry wrote this song so, obviously, he would sing it with feeling. And Voctave is a group of excellent singers and have a great arranger. To tell a secret, I think this is the best of the three as well, don't let the others know. How great it was is obvious from its ability to render Mortius speechless, that's a true Christmas miracle. Now, as a Home Fry and considering the season, I would be remiss if I didn't suggest you do their rendition of Auld Lang Syne. Just for the harmonies. Here's wishing everyone a better New Year that the last two.

What makes this even more special is that Mark was not able to stand for this performance. Mark was diagnosed with MS a few years ago and it has progressively gotten worse. To the point where he is unable to stand and sing very long. In advanced stages of MS diapragmatic weakness occurs along with speech difficulties. It is truly amazing how long Mark can still hold his notes given his advanced condition and not being able to stand while performing.

I was just going to say that! I was SO emotional hearing this version my first time (still do). My mom was diagnosed with MS the year after he was, and she sang too. Unfortunately, hers affected her singing, and that was her passion. This was her absolute favorite song. She passed away just before Christmas several years ago. My sisters, brother-in-law, daughters, and I sang this at her funeral and now every Christmas as a dedication to her.

I just saw your reaction to Home Free's cover, and I went looking through your channel in the hope that you had done a reaction to this version as well. Was not disappointed. Appreciate your analysis, and I'd like to add a bit. That high soprano is Kate Lott, and she is incredible. Her top note in this performance is a beautiful, /background/, G6. I mean sure it's just one moment within the much larger cohesive glory of this performance, but I've never heard of any other singer who could sing that note. Modest number who can legitimately perform a G6, a handful of those who can make it beautiful, but to place it in the background behind a melody that's like two octaves down? Forget about it. And yeah that bell-like resonance is all her - she really is /that/ good. More than half a decade since I first saw/heard this performance, and it still literally takes my breath away. A handful of individually incredible moments within it (eg. Kate's G6 and Mark's long note), but also the overall performance itself. Truly sublime.

The high soprano sings the highest note I've heard in any of their videos, a G6 at the climax. Kate Lott is a boss

Mark Lowry is a gifted singer, who for many years was the baritone in The Gaither Vocal Band, and in those performances clowning it up with a sternly serious (tongue-in-cheek, of course) Bill Gaither who sang bass. He's got an old-school _legato_ type delivery, very heartfelt quality, musically. He wrote the words to this song, teaming up with Buddy Greene (also a Gaither alum, known affectionately as 'that harmonica guy') on the music. A YT search for videos of both men doing various performances is a rabbit hole well worth the time, plus it gives one a bit of context for where Mark's coming from stylistically here.

All 3 are "the best," really. I'm a Pentaholic, enjoy Home Free, love Voiceplay (recent addiction) and had never heard Voctave before, nor Mark Lowry. When I hear the PTX version, I'm blown away by the MUSIC - the harmonies, voices, percussion, perfection. Not to mention the video itself, which is beautifully framed. Home Free is equally good harmonically and musically. I'm not a big fan of country music so I rank them a little behind Pentatonix. But both groups seem to be focusing on making the music as good as they can get it. This version is musically excellent, I'm willing to grant - but it's the FEELING that makes it rank higher than the other two. Like you said, it's got the emotional tug of a real conversation. Mark's voice is interesting, and well suited to bringing in the feels, and that note.... wow. It's not just because he's the author that he owns it (I've heard plenty of originals that either PTX or Home Free has made 100 times better), it's that he means it.

This song was my first Voctave experience and it gets me every time! As a soprano, I am so amazed at how she can soar in the clouds so lightly without blasting out everyone with the breath support it must take to sustain her melody. As a Home Fry, I loved hearing the guys with a new arrangement, but this is the best performance.

Mark Lowery wrote the words to this song. I once heard him say that he started thinking about what he would ask Mary if he had gotten a chance to meet her. He said the words just poured out naturally from there! Beautiful! 💖

I turned 70 in May of 2021. I began singing Acapella harmony at about age 4 when my dad taught me both melody and harmony to many of his old Glee club songs. I also sang 5 years in the children’s choir at church and in the Freshmen Choir in High School. When I was 14, Dad started bringing me to his Barbershop chorus shows and District contests. And at 16, I joined his chorus. Today I’m no longer active but a 55-year Life Member, and 1987 International Chorus Champion [as a Tenor with the West Towns Chorus] of the Barbershop Harmony Society [BHS]. I also spent time in the BHS contest judging program. And, I sang in over 60 Barbershop choruses and quartets District contests for over 20 years with one of my quartets finishing as high as 3rd Place. Needless to say, I’m a huge fan of Barbershop Quartets & Choruses. But, I also love of most forms of Acapella - from; the present day Big 3 of Acapella; Pentatonix, Home Free and VoicePlay. To college groups like BYU’s Vocal Point, Noteworthy and the Yale Whiffenpoofs. To Multi-trackers like Sam Robson and Danny Fong. Plus, groups like; Take 6, The Real Group, Singers Unlimited, and so many others including what in my humble opinion is currently THE Greatest Acapella Group on the Planet today - VOCTAVE. That said, here you have just reacted to Voctave’s version of “Mary Did You Know” comparing it with Home Free’s version and found out how good Voctave is. So now I’d like to see your reaction comparing to Voctave’s “O Holy Night” featuring Voctave’s own Tiffany Coburn kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKjLipeGqa1od8U . And then check out Voctave’s O Come All ye Faithful featuring Voctave’s own E.J. Cardona kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZ3Nf2SPft17n6s

Agree, this is the best version I have heard. Original singer backed by Voctave ... does not get better than this. With Lowry (and Voctave) you really feel the songs emotional element. Lowry, even at this age and stage of life, has a set of lungs to be envied ... that note hold ... wow! Just goes to show that accapella does not always need fireworks ... I get far more from the emotional side of the performance. Voctave are really a slick outfit ... the way they turn towards the soloist (see O'Holy Night and O Come All Ye Faithful). They do all the little things well...

I was lucky enough to get to perform with Voctave recently at a holiday concert and honestly it is crazy to be able to actually perform with groups like this. They honestly sound just as good live as in recording, including the one piece they did off mic at the very end. It was definitely great to perform with a group like them. They were so professional when working with college and high school musicians that it honestly blew my mind.

There is always something special when the writer sings a song. I'm glad you caught the conversation tone of the lyrics. Mark wrote it after thinking what if he was sitting with Mary over a cup of coffee. And I don't know if you noticed something. On the line "calm the storm with his hand", most singers emphasize "his" while Mark emphasizes "hand".

Mortius, you can't argue with perfection. The man wrote the lyrics to this song & believes with all his heart & soul. How can anyone compete with that? Mark suffers from MS which is why he's sitting for this performance but you can tell that he feels so truly blessed to be able to sing this for us. To me, it's perfection.

Yes! Loved your reaction to this! My brother is a Pentaholic and will always tell me his favorite is their version of this. There is no denying the greatness of their version but this one is just magical and angelic. I love how you mentioned that Voctave knows how and when to shine. There have only been a few reactors to Voctave that I have heard mention their musicianship and professionalism when a soloist is singing. Thank you for mentioning that. Also, near the end of your video you mentioned when you sing what you believe in, people notice and that is part of what makes good music great. I was listening to the Matthew West podcast (who is also a very talented singer and songwriter) and he interviewed Jody McBrayer (who sang with Voctave on Someone Like me from Jekyll and Hyde....this needs your reaction too). They both mentioned that this something that they have noticed throughout the years is that when they really take the words they are singing to heart and truly mean them and believe in them, that's when their listeners notice.

The Home Free and Pentatonix versions (which I adore equally) take you to Church, but Voctave's rendition with Mark Lowry transport your heart & soul beyond the stratosphere straight to Heaven and the angelic chorus! 🙏😇😇😇🎵🎶💕✨ You absolutely hear and feel it in your gut in Mark's performance that he truly believes and feels every. single. word. Meanwhile, Voctave's backup is so incredibly nuanced yet powerful... Leaves me shaken AND stirred! 🥰😇

Some of the more impressive is that he also has MS when he sung this and that is why he is sitting. He wrote the words but can’t read music so he had someone else do the original music for it. Now the weird thing with him is that now only is he a great singer but also a comedian. If you ever need a laugh look up some of his stuff with the gaither vocal band not for your channel but personal viewing

Mortius has malfunctioned !! Greatest reaction yet to this song! Mark wrote this in 1984 and Buddy Greene did the music to it. I 1st heard this song when Mark was in the Gaither vocal band. I've loved the song ever since. Now this version was the best. Voctave sounds like angels singing behind Mark. I saw Mark in concert once, and yes he sang this song. Mark is not only a great singer, but a comedian, minister and songwriter. He wrote this when asked to write a script for a church Christmas play.

I'm commenting more to just say... something. But, yeah, the first time I heard this, I was like you: Unable to really experience the music for what they were doing and just experiencing the emotion conveyed; which is impressive for me, as someone who struggles to connect with emotion generally - and I still get chills every time i hear it, although I can now focus more on their technique. I'm so glad you had the same reaction to it as me because I've had this playing whilst friends and family have been in ear shot and they just didn't seem to care about it like we do and i thought i was being stupid or something, like, in my heart, i knew i wasn't, but there's always that doubt, ya know? ... omg... My own choir has done a different arrangement of this, and - without sounding too braggy, we're pretty good - we can't even hold a flickering candle to these guys. My awe is true.

This beginning is actually closer to that done by one of the earliest releases, the one by Mark's fellow Gaither Vocal Band alum, Michael English. Way back in the day. Also, those long sustained notes -- they're a big thing in both Southern Gospel (Mark's genre) and barbershop. I've heard some in live performance that make you wonder if they have an extra set of lungs in there somewhere.

Thank you for another great reaction! I don't know if you do reactions to non acapella stuff that is still theater-related, but if you do I would highly recommend "Tough Love" form PattyCake Productions - Written by Voiceplay's percussionist Layne Stein and their former baritone (and current co-owner of the studio) Tony Wakim! It's an original song written for disney villains, and it's incredibly catchy! On the acapella side, I would recommend "Bang!" or "Attention" by VoicePlay - Not enough love out there for the two of them I feel, and while it is pop-music I would be highly interested in your insights of them! Thanks again for amazing reactions and videos this entire year, I've learned a lot from you, laughed a lot with you and smiled a bunch thanks to you! Hope the new year will be good to you!

Is it actually a Cover when the author of the song sings the lead? I dont know. But I have been in the building when Mark sings this song and its is not only special, it us powerful! First time I saw the Gaither Vocal Band with Mark, David Phelps and Guy Penrod, they sang this song and with "Praises of the Lamb" dust shook from the rafters of the coliseum and snowed down on the audience! It was so powerful it rattled the building literally. You dont have to react to it if you dont want to but there is a version of this song with those three that they did outside around a Bonfire and it is oh so powerful!! It is the version from the Video Bill and Gloria Gaither Hawaiian Homecoming. Check it out. But I also agree that this version is one of the Best I've heard! Mark was it his top voice and Voctave was awesome as always! Great job with the reaction. By the way, you expressed the type of afterglow so many others have felt before when Mark sings this song. Not to take away from the others because both Home Free and PTX did great jobs, but there is a difference between singing a song and actually Believing, Feeling, Living the song in your life! Mark above all others delivers that. When he wrote the lyrics he thinking about questions he would ask Mary if she were sitting and talking to him. What was it like to know that the baby in her arms was the living God in flesh? What did she know about what his life would entail? Funny enough, what kind of kid was he? Its an amazing story and hes told at a few times. Thanks again for this reaction.

As we hear the last chord the two prominent voices are the mezzo soprano singing the 5th to the tonic key versus the coloratura sound on the 9th to the tonic key. This creates a hollow combination which does, indeed, sound like a glass ringing. Normally we would hear that chord resolve to the tonic in most arrangements of music so we would hardly notice, but this chord is left unresolved and creates so much mystery along with several overtones.

This performance is a special and unique experience. There is no argument to be had. The ringing at the end was likely a consequence of the over tone series of the lower female parts interacting with the high soprano. Some of the phrasing that Mark uses in this are interesting and different than the basic phrasing that i often hear. A specific example would be 10:41 "will calm the storm, with his hand."

There are things you can do with an 11 member group that a 5 member group can't compete with. Extra long notes by working in pairs. Half the group supporting a chord and the other half providing movement and many other things. And this group has the chops to do it all very well. I'm a pentaholic, but this group provided a much fuller experience on this song.

At the same time, I don't know how often they'd need to trade off to sustain long notes. There are a number of examples of several of their singers holding notes for a very impressive time. But, if anyone where to be able to trade off on a note without really being noticeable, it would be Voctave, too. :)

I love the versions by both PTX and Home Free, but this is on a whole nother level. The difference when the soloist believes the words with his whole heart and soul. And of course, Voctave has unmatched vocal qualities.

As the lyricist, Mark knew not to enunciate the ‘his’ before ‘hand’ in the first verse. His delivery was so very personal.

My favorite Christmas video this year, was Home Free: Christmas Ain’t For the Lonely co-written by Tim Foust, for this same reason. There is something so special when songwriters sing their own songs from the heart. Home Free: Warmest Winter (co-written by Austin) had me crying myself to sleep after watching it. 😭. I hope you have seen Warmest Winter, its so special. My favorite video that makes me cry is Chris Rupp featuring Home Free: Movin On. After I saw the Movin On video I immediately became Chris Rupp fan and a Home Fry.

I often struggle putting words, facial expressions, and even sounds to how I feel, even when I listen to this version of this song. You, sir, have given me all of them in this video. I profoundly appreciate and thank you so much for your honesty, vulnerability, and expertise all displayed in this video. Again, thank you.

Does it really count as a cover when it's Mark Lowrey at the lead? Definitely agree that this one is the best performance wise of the a capella renditions.

I have had the pleasure of hearing Mark Lowry in person sing his song. Mark has been a member of Bill Gaither's singers twice. He is also a Christian Comedian.

The best version I have heard was performed by Mark Lowry at his concert. This is a great version, but to hear him sing it in person is like nothing else!

I’ve loved Mark Lowry since I was like 8 or 9, and this song has been my favorite forever. I actually recorded it for my Granny last year for Christmas and she played it for his mom, who is her friend. This was beautiful

This is in another dimension! - We are super lucky, proud and humble to be able to listen to the actual co-Author expressing his feeling and emotions the way he intended for us to feel it, surrounded by no other than a chorus of super skilled angels from Voctave! - Enjoy this multiple times and share it! God Bless All....

Voctave is the best hands down! Arrangement AND performance!!! Jamie Ray is an incredible arranger.

I couldn't agree with you less about one statement. This arrangement by Jamie Ray is one of the best choral arrangements ever conceived and written. That, coupled with Voctave, and led by Mr. Lowry, gave us a truly magnificent gift. Comparing Voctave to PTX or VoicePlay or HomeFree is comparing apples to oranges. The amazing beat boxing of the other three is never missed with Voctave - in fact, it would take away from their performance. We're all fortunate to be able to hear all four of these groups in their prime and enjoy their musical talents.

You were hearing DISSONANCE when you talked about the sound glass makes. It's the specific chords they were singing causing it. It's prevalent in most of their music. It's beautifully done and when it resolves...it's like melted butter. 🧈 Drum Corps music is very similar to their style.
