The most beautiful moment of the whole film. After years of people trying to persuade him to take an easier path, his wife openly says she is with him (always) and essentially gives him her blessing to die. It's a shared chalice. Both will suffer for this, but it is done of their own free will.

Watching Diehl crack or straight up cry is like the feeling of knives jabbing at me. It's painful to watch him like that...

Valerie Pachner's eyes are so striking and beautiful it's hard to stop looking at her. You can tell Mr. Malick's camera really loved them too. Thanks for sharing JoBlo, I hope you and your family are safe and healthy.

A marriage that has the faith where it must be as true believers. That's what brings the tears to the scene, knowing the joy they will have once they get to the promised land, the Kingdom of heaven.

The ending of this film is unspeakably grim…with the awful guillotine in the out building, behind the curtain, and the ridiculous executioner in his top hat, and the buckets of water to swill away the blood. Truly horrible.

I think it takes a lot of courage to go through all this suffering he went through towards his death. He did what he believed was right..

First of all, Franz was Austrian, Nazi invaded Austria (an independent country) and asked the Austrians to make a loyalty to the Nazi. It's just like the new colonialisation. It's like when the white people came to America and asked the native to obey them. Franz could choice to 'obey' the invader or join the resistance to fight for his own country. (Learn about the resistance movement in France during 2nd world war). And see with the situation in Ukraine now. But Franz choose not both of them because it against of his believe and values. The people in the village choose to be coward to obey their invaders. Nothing brave and patriotic about that. At least Franz have his own believe and live with it.
