Today we look at the A Hirajoshi scale! There are only 5 notes in this scale - a minor triad (A,C and E), a major second (B) and a minor sixth (F). These added intervals sound a bit more interesting than the perfect fourth and minor seventh of the pentatonic scale and I'm sure you will find some great applications for it!

I don't know if it is truly an A scale, but, it sounds to me as an E scale, which name in Ethiopia is known as AMBASSEL.

Hey dude. The scale you described is a Hirajoshi scale of "E", if the same notes remain E F A B C. Hirajoshi of A would be A Bb D E F. The center of the scale you showed is altered. The traditional Japanese scales are two: In and Yô, and they have seven notes. Each Scale has 3 modes that can be found in different ways depending on the musical genre. Hirajoshi is based on In Mode (陰 or Ryû) in its earliest forms. In the following forms there is a change in the second and fifth notes of the mode. Beware of misinformation.

Especially in relation to Western studies without the proper study of traditional Japanese music theory.

Sounds like Phrigian a bit as a shape

It reminds me also a little bit of phrygian, but there's a major second than a minor second in it. Also interesting is the japanese pentatonic 1 b2 4 b5 b7

It sounds kind of like lydian to me, with a spice of phyrgian. Its got that middle eastern feel to it, but it also feels floaty or ethereal like lydian
