Hey everyone! Thanks for stopping by to hear about the stories behind God cards in Magic. I just wanted to address some of the most common questions I'm seeing in the comments here: 1. "Your audio is bad and you should feel bad." Yes, noted. Please remember, I'm doing this from home, in a little study that I'm converting to a studio. This week, I moved all my furniture (computer desks, storage cabinets, couch, everything) around so that my back would be to the window, since so many people had asked for a solid background rather than seeing the room behind me. It turns out, you cannot please everyone, and now the audio has taken a dip as my voice is echoing off all the haphazardly arranged items just out of view of the camera. I will keep working on it, but in the meantime any further comments about audio quality will be deleted. It's not that they aren't valid feedback - it's just that they are not adding anything new to the conversation at this point. As always, I appreciate your patience as I continue to level up my production capabilities for this show :-) 2. "You forgot (card that isn't a God but would have fit in here)" Yes, I had to leave out a lot of stuff. I try to keep these videos 15 to 20 minutes long, and this was already over that with everything I did include. Magic is a huge game with a vast history. The goal of Magic Arcanum is to provide enough context so that new players especially are not overwhelmed or left completely in the dark with what's happening in current sets. For episodes that are "a history" of a topic, I do try and widen the scope a bit, but don't want to stray too far from the thesis of the show. 3. "Your design for Norse Gods would break the game!" Rosewater has expressed a desire to push the envelope, and we know the Un Sets have been a testing ground for new ideas. It's possible the gods will start in their own sort of mini-deck (like Contraptions) or need to augment themselves onto existing cards. I didn't spend hours playtesting this idea. I just wanted to capture the gods popping in to mess with people's lives, then leaving again. There are probably countless better ways to do it, but I'm an entertainer, not a member of WotC R&D...at least not yet :-) 4. "Your face is punchable and your mustache is ugly"

From a lore standpoint, Hazoret. She doesn’t need to rely on devotion and outlasted every other god on Amonkhet, including the God-Pharaoh and is an absolute powerhouse as Ixalan Standard proved. The only possible contender would be Ilharg, and we don’t know enough about the boar god(which is almost as cool a creature type as Bird Wizard) to decide which one possesses more raw power.

Rhonas died cause of Pride and strength , he beat the crap out of scorpion but thinking the foe was dead , he started to brag and rally everyone to him. Ever heard of overgods? In D&D on Toril, for example, there's Ao, the "boss" of the other deities. No belief or worship required for power. He is beyond that. Two possible inclusions in this category, for MtG, *may* be: Gaea (Dominaria), and Nyx (Theros). I don't think they're card-able. In other words, truly immortal. In D&D terminology, players would say: "they don't have stats, you can't kill them." What does everyone else think about my hypothesis?
@MagicArcanum4 жыл бұрын
Nyx is a place more than an entity, but other planes do have "world souls." Nissa is pretty good at talking to them, actually, and is friends with Zendikar (like, the entire plane itself.)

Thank you so much for making this video! As far as the god that I think is the most powerful, I'm biased towards Kruphix. As a card it's very strong granting no max hand size and keeping all of your extra mana around, very blue and green. Lore wise Kruphix is cool because he know literally everything that everyone on Theros knows, which means the planeswalkers that have been there have provided him with a lot of knowledge. Ajani, Elspeth, and Ashiok have all been to other planes before going to Theros, letting Kruphix know about the Phyrexians, Eldrazi, Alara, War of the Spark/Ravnica, and a few other planes and events. It is very likely that Calix and/or Elspeth will return to Theros in the future. Elspeth to see Daxos and Calix to see Klothys, this means Kruphix will keep learning more. Also on the flavor tezt of Return to Nature from THB Kruphix apparently has some ability to see the future. Once again thank you so much for making this video!

The design of the "norse" gods you're proposing is extremely risky, there'd be no reason not to put every single one of them in your deck, especially if they take up deck slots. No idea who the strongest god is but my two favourite gods are the dimir ones since I have both as commanders for decks of mine. Phenax especially holds a special place since his deck was the first I put together completely on my own, without a precon base.
@YourCrazyOverlord4 жыл бұрын
Phenax was my first edh deck too! And as a commander, Scarab (or maybe Karametra) is definitely ludicrous.

@@kingginger3335 I agree, if anything the Norse Gods are canonically way more human and way more proactive than just about any other pantheon. I can see them actually lacking the standard indestructibility of MTG gods (as they are not immortal, just live a very long time with that time being supplemented with apples of immortality) or any sort of "active only if" clause in exchange for having a much greater presence on board.

@levithompson11614 жыл бұрын
@@cryosen well they would have to balance them around certain requirements. Like they would be "free" in terms of mana but you would have to like counter spells or something. I see it as fairly similar to something like the hideaway lands. I would also assume that maybe you could only run one copy of a god, and probably only like a maximum number of them that you can have start in exile or wherever.
@cryosen4 жыл бұрын
@@levithompson1161 Even if you can only run one copy, every deck in any format where they're legal would run them even if they can't play them, just to have a lesser amount of cards in the deck, which is objectively better. I like the idea of a God that chills in exile and reappears when you meet its conditions, but starting the game from that position is liable to break in all sorts of ways, most notably by not requiring you to play the colors of the gods. I think it's more likely that we see designs like the Titans - gods that are cast, enter the battlefield with an effect, then exile themselves until a condition is met, upon which they return (either temporarily or permanently). Here's some rough drafts: Odin is blue and draws a card, then returns when you draw two/three or more cards in one turn. Loki is black and drains your opponent for 1, then returns when your opponents loses 2/3/4 or more life in one turn. Frygg is green and Explores, then returns when you have six/seven lands on the battlefield. Tyr is white and makes a 1/1 Soldier, then returns when you attack with three/four or more creatures. Thor is red and Shocks/Bolts, then returns when you deal noncombat damage two/three times in one turn.

I think a soundproof room would go a long way to increasing the quality of the video, there is a lot of reverb going on here. But the content is great

You forgot about all the cards in early magic that reference Svyelun. You have let down all merfolk everywhere, and have labeled yourself an enemy of the sea.

Once you get a new mic (or whatever the fix is), I would love to listen to these last few episodes 're-uploaded'. I try to listen to these while I'm driving to work, but it's really quiet and hard to understand. I know you are working to fix the issue (maybe record audio and video separate, then edit them together?), and I appreciate your hard work. However, I just can't bring myself to finish the videos as they are now

Yeah the more types something is the more vulnerable it is. That is important for a lot of these cards

Heliod, God of the Sun's art bugs me. I did javelin in high school for 2 years, and I tried re-creating the pose he is in. It is near impossible to do, without bending your arm at an extremely uncomfortable angle. Plus, it offers no combative advantage over a more traditional pose. Why, Heliod? WHY?

Totally in character for him to do something really hard and impractical just so that he would look cool.

The wiki also mentions a Cacophony god of cities who was slain by Ephara? Do you know anymore about this because I cant find a card or anything? P.S. Thankyou for producing my favorite mtg content :)

She was created by Ashiok using the nightmares of Ephara. That's why Cacophony was a mockery of Ephara. But Ephara quickly found and killed her in Nyx It was a side story from the original Theros lore. That's why Askiok needed Phenax to conceal him from the other gods, as Ryan stated in the video
