One time I was in class and my Nigerian lecturer asked me and my fellow colleague if we were Tutsi or Hutu , we both said we are Rwandan . He asked again this time individually, we both said we are Rwandan. I hope this question of whether one is Tutsi or Hutu ends . We are one people . Though proud of our ancestry , it should not be the reason for being unfair to each other . I am proud to be Rwandan and grateful for whatever we have achieved. I honestly hope no Rwandan blood shades again.

@@jamesmuhoozi5812 my Tutsis neighbour also gave me a lecture that both the Hutu and Tutsis are originally words to describe economic status, not racial status. It is the Tutsi tribe that almost got wiped out by the hutu tribe and the colonizers,it was basically started by the colonizers who wanted to rule the country forever so Tutsi were against that and demanded that colonizers leave the country, but hutus were fine with the colonizers staying and ruling the country forever as colonizers had brainwashed them to hate Tutsi to the core by calling Tutsi foreigners who occupied hutu land all of that was a tactic of colonizers to steal the country and keep it themselves, matter or fact they have assigned a different country where each tribe came from saying Tutsi came from ethiopia, hutu came from chad and twa came from ituri in congo, the colonizers literally wanted to make themselves as the natives of Rwanda,Tutsi were a huge threat to colonizers hence why they sought to exterminate them with the help of hutus,so they put hutus in power with that genocidal agenda, that was the main thing all hutu governments did, just to kill Tutsi with no reason until Tutsi formed an army to defeated them after the 1994 genocide against Tutsi where more than a million was killed in just 100 days.

Just found this channel. I am a young Irishman who has always been fascinated by Africa and it's many cultures and peoples, which probably stems from my father who was born in Nigeria (his parents having went there teaching English and building houses). I love to see a channel like this that promotes African history and Culture. I have always seen similarities between the Irish and the Africans (especially those enslaved by the Imperial powers of Europe). To me it is always a shame as a proud Irishman to be lumped in with the British and Americans imperialists as 'white people'. The Irish have fought against British imperialism since 1169 AD in a conflict which my ancestors fought for many conflicts, in a conflict that it still on going. I just thought I would say this to let people know that we are not like the rest of them, on the contrary, we're very opposed to them. Love the channel! Peace to all

I love history and knew how far Irish people have suffered from British imperialism in their sole and how rough British have been to them as migrants in Britain for centuries. I know also in pre or aftermath of industrial revolution, Irish have suffered in England, accused of most of crimes, arrested and hang without proper investigations on the matter. I live in Australia and know some Irish in here who also talked about what you said. Unfortunately, many people don't know history and think all European were colonialists.

The complete meaning is, this traditional game (abatutsi) belongs to us. I read many books about Tutsi people and where the originally came from most of them described The tutsi are descendant from Oromo Ethiopians and Somalis in the Horn of Africa.

Burundians and Rwandas have their history in Burundi and Rwanda. There is no evidence of somali origin and even the video says nilotic which is not somali or abyssinians. That whole of deviding Burundians and Rwandas was started by christian missionaries when they came to Burundi and Rwanda. They spread information that tutsis were hamites which is a mythical people which somalis and abyssinians are apart of. When germany was defeated in east africa and belgium took over burundi and rwanda, they introduced identity cards in 1933 because race was a social class and the identity card meant that no one could switch due to their economical circumstances such as having cattles etc. The new missionaries also were a different branch of christianity and they started supporting different groups of people for their cause. Burundians and Rwandas are that. We share similar culture, language, etc. There is no hutu, tutsi, twa culture, language etc. There is no evidence of somali language in burundi or rwanda, and there is no evidence of islam before colonialism as somalis abyssinians have long history of islam. The theory that Gihanga was a Tutsi is not true because Gihanga reigned between 1081 and 1114 AD before the Tutsi ,Hutu and Twa concepts (Social Classes) were introduced.I must also mention that Hutu Tutsi and Twa are not Tribes. The Tutsi,Hutu and Twa concepts were introduced in 1345 by Kilima Rugwe who was a king that ruled between 1345-1378(200 years after Gihanga had died). The analogy of Tutis,Hutus and Twa was exactly the same as Nobles ,Clergy and Commoners in Europe .The intention of introducing these social classes were just to create a society full of rich people and leaders who can solve problems in the society. In fact ,the criteria for belonging in a Tusti class was to be rich, unbderstanding of the royal and political matters, ability to fighta nd die for the country and willingness to help and support Hutus to become Tutsis in the future. This means you could be a Hutu today but if you work hard you could become a Tutsi tomorrow. The intention of the king was to ensure that every Rwandan becomes a Tutsi, and that all Tutsis must ensure that they help Hutus and Twas to become Tutsis.

Hi Vincent! I believe this is the version of history that I'm familiar with as well, one of these being social classes as opposed to pure ethnicity. But given that other peoples from Sudan and Somalia corroborate the presence of batutsi in their culture means there's some ethnic distinctions and different origins and history, right? I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle. The ethnic distinctions existed but were later morphed into social classes to serve political agendas, no? I'm trying to make sense of it all because our African history has really been manipulated over time.

nshimiyimana jean baptiste I understand you.First of all,Kinyarwanda is very similar to Lunyankole which was spoken by Basinga and Bazigaba when they arrived in Rwanda. Then Banyiginya when they came they had to adopt the local language. So the Kinyarwanda that we speak today originated from Lunyakilima which is a language that originated from Lunyankole

Mara the Akata stop looking for Caucasians to be interested in something that’s European History. Every educated European knows the truth about Africa and melanin people. Besides the artifacts, they have the missionaries accounts, and there’s books written by Jewish historians/ merchants. Caucasians have access to the truth, they don’t care because it helps them continue to promote the Western Civilization Myth! African History disproves capitalism, they don’t want that truth to come into the light! Melanin people are socialist by nature.

amanda ray I tried telling people in the 90s these charter schools were no good for our children. Most of them lost or never had accreditation, and have since closed. This after draining public schools funding and hence displacing thousands of children. Children have to be bused to schools outside of their neighborhoods and even the cities they live in! Not to mention the curriculum has put the children in a “ I have all school year to complete these assignments when I feel like doing them “, type of mindset. There are literally no deadlines or sense of urgency to do anything! How can this prepare you for life or for providing for yourself?! Charter schools are taking children’s initiative away by not promoting a sense of continuous achievement!

So essentially, European colonialism infiltrated an indigenous African society and applied backwards, racist ideologies into the system already in place, which created discord, disharmony and war among the local populations. Interestingly, it seems like the ancestral Tutsi migrants who came into the region did so peacefully, intermarrying with the local agriculturalists at a high degree.

This history of Batutsi and Bahutu is similar to that of South Africa Ma Xhosa and Ma Zulu who are historically one big NGUNI tribe Together with Ma Swati etc.) who divided themselves up because of circumstances and later after colonisation by white europeans lost their unique oneness and became rivals. I'm glad to hear this Hutsi and Tutsi history. Just my conjectures here: These Tutsis remind me of Fulanis in West Africa. Similarities: They probably came into the region in a relatively recent history. The infamous cattle herding and nomadic lifestyle. The complete openness to live among their hosts and intermarry. The habit of installing one of theirs as chief within the community. They also look Fulani. Again, these are just my thoughts.. I wonder if the Fulani lost a group that ended up in Rwanda lol

Kendall Bledsoe I’m not sure if I’m included in this, as I am Irish and not of African roots, but yes, it is great to see people from other countries communicating and learning more about each other! I was inspired to learn more of African and in particular Rwandan histories and cultures by Stromae, my favorite singer and songwriter. He is half Rwandan and has mentioned tutsi/hutu tensions in his songs previously, so I really wanted to learn more about the roots and background of this amazing guy. I absolutely love his work (and him) :)

No you are confusing things probably cus you didn't learned their history from the right source. Tutsi history is self explanatory and Tutsi ancestors made sure to preserve it through sophisticated way of memorizing it through what they called "Ibisigo" and ibisigo never change they had what they called "Inteko y' abasizi" whose main duty was to memorize history through "ibisigo" which is a way close to poems but not exactly poems as poems are always about expressing your feelings but "Ibisigo" were not about feelings but rather they were about reality of what happened in their lives and there is a queen mother who introduced that kind of history preservation and she is credited for that, her name was "Nyirarumaga". In Tutsi monarchy no king was allowed to rule alone without his mother ,even he had lost his mother prior to being crowned they would look for another woman in his family to serve as his mother and that's what happened to that queen mother"Nyirarumaga" she wasn't the biological mother of the king but because the king's mother died when he was still young when he got crowned the king he asked that Nyirarumaga would be his mother and rule with him,she was a very smart lady with the kindest heart and that's how she entered in the history making. So what you are saying about "Gihanga" is called "ibitekerezo"and this was a way of conveying a message more like parables which is based on actions not bloodline, so Gihanga didn't not father Tutsi and Hutu and Twa that's not the message the Tutsi monarchy wanted to pass down ,it's nothing to do with bloodline but rather the actions of Gihanga as a founder of "Rwanda as a country " and so because there are 3 tribes in Rwanda :Tutsi ,Hutu and Twa and yes Gihanga is a Tutsi king who founded Rwanda as a country hence why he was credited for that and called the father of Rwanda and hence there were 3 tribes Tutsi,Hutu ,Twa that's why they had to convey a message that says he is the father of those 3 tribes since he is the founder of the country Rwanda that has 3 tribes so it has nothing to do with the bloodline and they never intended to to say he biologically fathered them no it was merely based on Him being the founder of the country and cus he was credited to found the country they also had to include all the 3 tribes on that land. And prior to Gihanga there were other Tutsi kingdoms on the land and no body knows when they came and no the whole land was not inhabited by Hutu and Twa and also no body knows when hutu or twa came to that land either so no body can tell who came the first but since the land is in east Africa and it's where the furthest source of the Nil river is and it's 100% sure that Tutsi ruled in ancient egypt&israel when these two countries were one and inhabited by black nations and that's exactly where Tutsi ancestors said they came from and they look exactly like many kings and royals of ancient Egypt so one can conclude that they were used to travel to the source of Nil river since Nil river has always been the main source of water for Egypt and so when it was time to look for another land to inhabit they knowingly went down to the region of great lakes where they knew there is the source of their Nil river hence why no body knows who came first between Tutsi,Hutu and Twa . However when migrations took place in Africa it was impossible to see the whole tribe migrating at the same time o they would come in small groups and that's what happened to Tutsi too, Gihanga was the son of a man called "Kazi" who was the 12th generation of the last Tutsi group and his mother was the daughter from one of the first Tutsi groups who came and occupied the empty land and started their kingdom so that's how Gihanga was born and he married in the first Tutsi group who had built more kingdoms thus had more land they ruled and it's from this group that he gave birth to his son called "Kanyarwanda" and had him inherit his new Kingdom Rwanda that he started to found with the aim of making an empire by bringing together all the other kingdoms ruled by his fellow Tutsi to form one big country Rwanda so they could have a centralized administration, so Gihanga had other 3 more sons from other Tutsi women from other groups and he had them inherit other kingdoms he had built Bugesera still in Rwanda,in Kivu region currently in congo ,Karagwe region currently in Tanzania cus the colonizers stole the land from Rwanda and added it onto the neighbor countries in a way of taking the richest part away so Rwanda wouldn't be a strong country and make colonizers lose their power in the region . So those first Tutsi groups who came first and inhabited the empty lands they migrated in groups and were all from north Africa the side of egypt/israel and didn't come all at the same time however they are known to be the people who built the first kingdoms on the land so when each came to the empty land they would give themselves a name of praising themselves based on what they want to do how far they want to take the kingdom or just based on how noble they are and then they would pick an animal that would be their mascot that's totemic, and those groups of Tutsi gave themselves these names :Abasinga,Abazigaba,Abenengwe,Abongera, Abahinda, Ababanda and Abagara and these were the names they gave their kingdoms, Initially there were inhabited by Tutsi only but later as they kept breeding themselves their number grew and they had noticed the other parts of the land where hutu and twa scattered and didn't have kings, they simply lived one family here another there and each family would mind their own business and yes they were farmers so the elder of the family would serve as someone who take the lead in farming and help them cut down forests so they could have land to cultivate and his descendants would harvest and bring him offerings from the harvest and that's it ,they had no ruling system as a whole tribe it was more of a house thing which made Tutsi see the potential of expanding their kingdoms onto those lands too and when a kingdom of one of those Tutsi groups expanded its territory onto that land where hutu and twa are scattered that land would also take the name of that Tutsi group and so would hutu and TWA since it was the name of the land not the name of lineage. For instance when the Tutsi kingdom called Abasinga expanded onto that land where hutu and twa are scattered that land would also take the name of "Ubusinga " and so the hutu and twa on that land would also take the name of "Abasinga" since it's based on the land not the bloodline so there would now be the Abasinga who are Tutsi ,and abasinga who are Hutu and abasinga who are Twa so Tutsi strongly respected lineage/bloodline hence why they never tempted to play with their name Tutsi, it was always there as their tribe name and yes they are pastoralists and they are not Tutsi because they are pastoralists being pastoralists has nothing to do with identity it's simply cus that's their culture from their ancestors but being Tutsi is a bloodline identity it's their lineage and none can become a Tutsi by just owning cows that's a lie post colonial politics made up for their own benefits, one has to be born Tutsi to be called Tutsi hence why during the genocide against Tutsi 1959-1994 the hutu would simply look at them and know they are Tutsi and kill them and the genocide against Tutsi was a long time plan of the colonizers cus they tried to steal the country and stay in it but Tutsi refused to hand it over to them and started to fight them diplomatically and openly demanded them to get out of Rwanda that Rwanda is for Rwandans not europeans so the colonizers came up with a plan of puting hutu in power since hutu accepted to submit to colonizers and use them to exterminate Tutsi so colonizers would hope to forever have Rwanda as their land they would control any how they want.

Thank you for this understanding, Kaka Mdogo, bless you. I am beginning to see how the abandoning, for whatever reason, as seen in the Kongo Kingdom, of our age-old values and systems can be so devastating… yet these are systems that we can build on and achieve the African Renaissance. It’s not a small matter because without African Renaissance, which implies setting up systems within African civilization, the current struggle for economic liberation cannot be won…. This is because it is only our authentic aspirations that can drive such an economy. And aspirations, in turn, come from self-determination, which itself comes from identity, which is born of culture, spawned of civilization. For now, we, Africans, run our systems using borrowed or enforced European aspirations…and the lender of aspirations controls the dreams, thoughts, actions, destiny and EXISTENCE of the borrower. This is why wa henga (the ancients) said "Mwaacha mila ni mtumwa" in Kiswahili roughly translates into “He who abandons their culture becomes enslaved” We can only entrust our future to ourselves; Therefore we have to generate our own aspirations, which come, in four steps, from our civilization as discussed above.
