I put a tube in my lawn tractor's front tire this weekend thanks to your very helpful video! I also threaded a nut onto the Valve Stem to keep it from disappearing back into the hole, and left it there in case it wants to wander later. While filling the tube, I heard the alarming hiss of leaking air, and feared that the new tube had failed - only to realize it was the air escaping from between the tire and the tube before the beads had fully seated - whew! Cheers!

Good job. But a couple of ideas from an old tire service guy of many years: 1) Pull the valve stem out so the tube will collapse enough to pull it out. 2) As mentioned by someone else, mark the alignment of the valve with the tire before you break the bead so you'll know where to look for a nail or something on the inside. 3) You should burnish off the tube with sand paper or something equally rough to roughen the rubber so the vulcanizing glue can get a better drip and it remove debris (like soapstone) from the tube too. Then clean it off thoroughly. 4) Squeeze all the air out of the tube before you put it back into the tire so it goes in easier. 5) Once the tube is in the tire, put the valve through the hole and add enough air (with the valve core replaced) to round out the tube so it's against the tire and away from the wheel. This will help keep it from getting pinched when you pry the tire back over and it'll prevent it from wrinkling and creasing inside the tire when you inflate it. Nice to see people doing their own work these days. Not enough of that anymore. Good for you!

Bruce did you know that there is a correct and incorrect direction to install a snap ring and an "E" clip? When the spring steel is stamped on the one side the edges are rounded from the stamping procedure and the under side is still sharp. IT is best to install the snap ring (E clip) with the sharp edge toward the direction of removal. IT holds in place with more strength and is less likely to slip off.
@BrucesShop6 жыл бұрын
Well that just makes sense. Remember i did not spend my life in a shop I spent it on the road installing electronic switching equipment. I do know there is a sharp side and a round side to every washer and that may be a specific way on the equipment. EG do you want the washer to dig in or just hold without deformation. THANKS!!!

Well done! FYI, what you removed is the core of the Schrader valve. The Schrader valve is the entire assembly including the stem, core, etc. If you think you may be dismounting and mounting tires every once in a while, you may want to think of picking up a set of small tire spoons. They're inexpensive. Amazon or even Harbor Freight as them for a few bucks and they're less likely to damage a tire or inner tube. One more thing: You don't have to remove the core to set the bead with an inner tube but it doesn't hurt. But it's almost necessary when popping the bead with a tubeless tire.

I have seen baby powder added to the tire and spreading around inside (like greasing a cake tin) before putting in tube to act as a bit of lubricant between tube and tire.
@Rich96c4ce5 жыл бұрын
A tire engineer at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration always used baby powder on his motorcycle tubes and tires. It makes sure that there are no pinches in the tube and less friction during initial inflation, and less friction from the rim strip and spoke nipples. It made for a lot less flats from the tube. Also, he always used the appropriately sized tire irons, too. P.S. I'm a lighting engineer.

Those prybars and screwdrivers with sharp edges are going to bite you, eventually. a $5 tire iron from Harbor Freight would take that unit to the next level. Great trick, I'll be sure to use it. Gonna be sure to save time by skipping the whole soaping the whole tire to find a leak in the tube, though, that's a little redundant. Oh, and I'll get that bead broke down on both sides with my boots before I put it on the machine, too. Thanks for the tip!
@BrucesShop6 жыл бұрын

@chaddesantis41916 жыл бұрын
It's not the force, it's the leverage. helps to push with your foot, close to the bead. If it doesn't come off that way, you know it's going to be a challenge. If it's going to be a challenge and you don't have a proper bead breaker, a 2x6 and another tractor/car/truck is the Cockford-Ollie.
@dwjw15 жыл бұрын
Helpful insights! They used to use a chisel-like affair with a sliding hammer to break the beads on larger tires. The operator would stand on the tire while he separated the bead. Using a large screwdriver is better for small tires. Insert it between the rim edge and the tire bead and rap it hard with a mallet. It is easier to do that when the tire is mounted on the 'changer' because usually you can break the bead with your fingers anyway. The tire irons are usually about 1/16" thick on the working end - just like a large screwdriver. Get a big screwdriver so that you have one for other purposes. A tire iron is quite specialized, but about the same as a slim wrecking bar and the straight end of such a wrecking bar will do as well as any tire iron IMO. I have yet to damage a bead or a rim with a wrecking bar or the screwdriver - but it is a big one - I should say 'was' because it is now only about 8" long after I broke it abusing it like that, but that is what I bought it for. LOL One could also purchase a device with a curved press and a long bar for mechanical advantage for difficult beads. The tire sits on the frame portion and the bar anchors on the opposite side. The press is connected to the bar and pinches down on the tire close to the bead to break it loose. I think Harbor Freight used to sell one of these too.

I got a similar changer I made from the rear axle of an MTD mower(that had the flats on the end). I had a machine shop at work so we milled the flat all the down the axle, but you could use a grinder and do it. I made a flat plate about 4" square from some 3/8" plate with a 3/4" hole right in the middle. On the very end of the axle I welded about a 2" square of 3/8" plate and it rests on the square throat of the vise. Then the 4" square plate with the 3/4" holes is slid down and welded.It is rock solid in the big vise on a steel table. I use spacers up and down the shaft that I bought in the hitch pin section of Tractor Supply. I usually put one bushing over the shaft, then the wheel, and more bushings until they barely stick over the top end of the axle where I use a thick homemade washer and a grade 8 bolt in the end of the axle to tighten it down On a MTD rear wheel you don't need anything to keep it from turning the axle sticks up 5 or 6" to give you something to pivot around with your tire tool. I use about a 24"long round bar. Works great!

Before you break the rim seal put a mark on the rim and tire at the valve stem, marking up their alignment. Then when you get the tube out you can line up the hole in the tube with a location on the tire. It makes looking for an object embedded in the tire much easier. I like your idea of using the bolt. However, you might consider putting the head of the bolt below the jaw edge of the vice and clamping down on the bolt shaft. This way, when you tighten down on the nut you're not working to pull the head of the bolt out of the vice's jaws, you are instead tightening the rim to the vice. And you might be able to do away with that spacer.

Oh God ,take the valve core out first, brake the bead on both sides of the tyre, make a mark on the the tyre at the valve stem, remove the tube and patch the hole, put a little powder on the patch so it won't stick to the tyre, lay the tube on the tyre with the valve stem lined up with the mark on the tyre, mark the tyre at the tube patch , remove the rim from the tyre and check at the mark you made for a nail or thorn, remove if need be, never wire brush the rim while in the tyre , grit or part of the wire brush if left in the tyre will cause another flat tyre, never use tyre levers to mount a tyre , sure to pinch the tube , move the tyre away from the beard into the well, and use a rubber mallet to mount the tyre.

After you find the leak on the tube when you get it out, lay it on the tire so the valve is on the mark you made on the sidewall and carefully feel in there for a nail, staple, even a needle or anything else that punctured it. Use a waded up paper towel or shop rag to sweep around. Saves the fingers. If it's a really big hole, you should put a patch on the inside of the tire so the tube doesn't find it's way out the hole, I've seen that happen. Then patch the tube and you should be all set.

To make it easier to install the tube, lay the wheel on your work bench with blocks holding the tire up with the rim lying on the bench. This allows you to use both hands to install the tube in the most available space. 😊

I remembered watching this in the past and instead of just clamping the bolt head in the vise I welded the bolt to a piece of angle iron so no matter what it stays in place in the vise. It worked pretty good and I welded some 3/8 bolts to the nut to act as handles so I can tighten it by hand.

Good ideas both on stabilizing the wheel and using the c-clamps. Why didn't you check the inside of the tire in case there was something still stuck in it as you had suggested? If there was anything, you'd have to go through this whole procedure again.

At 14:13 I do check the rim and tire. But maybe I didn't understand you comment. That happens.

Loved the clamp trick, I usually just wrestle it with a couple of HF tire irons. Some of these little wheels are a BEAST! Super cheap no mount too, a d I do have a bench vise ( and a HF vise that broke due to Chinese steel) and I've squeezed tires in that to break the bead. Otherwise I'd drive my truck across it,

Always mark the tire at the air stem hole so you can reference the exact location of the hole in the tube to the hole in the tire. There are several different types of stem tools to hold it in the hole while you work on it but none that I am aware of that let you fill thru. Like the bolt in the vice, that is handy. We don't have a Harbor Freight here but am pretty sure I saw a set of tire spoons at the local cheap tool supply.

Thanks . Right in Canada there are no Harbor Freight stores either.

At 14:18 it may be the puncture. Next time put a mark on the tyre where the valve is in orientation so the hole in the tube is lined up to the culprit

I ahve a 3/4" threaded rod through a piece of 4/4, and some spacers/washers to hold the rim and tire in my vise. As I work my way into the tire I will not be surprised that the tube was damaged, when the tire was rotated with low pressure in cold weather. "off shore" tubes do not take much abuse, and usually pop a leak on the midway seam. The rig was built to hold small rims for refinishing. I found the smaller the rim, the more difficult to work on. The tire I am working on now is from my 12 ton log splitter.
@BrucesShop6 жыл бұрын
You are so right. The smaller the tire the harder it is. I am sure the big ones are tough too though.

Bruce, I like the idea for the tire changer. A bolt in the vise is a great idea. You can pick up a 4 Piece heavy duty pry bar set at Habor Freight for 9.99. They come 8, 12, 18 and 24 inch length, believe me the come in handy some times. I have been working on these engines for the last 20 years. A shop I worked in, we use to use the pry bars alone on the bench to break the bead. It was much harder that way, but your way is nice there. Thanks for the idea to you and Gord.
@alwaysopen79705 жыл бұрын
I use a 10 bl sledge to break the bead. lay the tire on it's side and drop the sledge on the bead, not the rim. Works good.I don't worry about pulling the bead over the rim.
@philliphunt9376 Жыл бұрын
Saw a video on here that a guy made where he simply hit the tire with a large hammer. This worked for me getting the bead broken

Good job bruce I have started using inner tubes that have a sealer in them kind of like slime that seals a leak when you puncture the tire
@BrucesShop6 жыл бұрын
Yes i put one of those on my wife's bike last year.
@kennycybertron16 жыл бұрын
Does that slime work in a car tire?
@nashguy2076 жыл бұрын
No do not put slime in car or truck tires it should only be used in tires that are not for road use!!!
@lmalino6956 жыл бұрын
I've successfully used Slime in many applications; car tires and yard equipment. It successfully slowed air loss well enough to get me home at a slow speed in a belt separation failure.
@nashguy2076 жыл бұрын
I have used slime several times i do not like the mess it makes when you take the tire off the rim. Also it says on the bottle not intended for highway use. I agree it can work in an emergency in a car tire if you drive slow. I have been told that a car tire with slime in it will not balance correctly either.

I think you might of put the patch on upside down. That plastic peal off protected the surface that would make contact with the inner tube. But you put lots of rubber glue on so it will still work.

Maybe you didn't have them when you made this video, but the small tubing pliers you got from a sub might be easier to use for holding the valve stem. You might get a little more clearance for the inflation chuck. Did you check the tire to see if whatever punctured the tube? Sometimes thorns, nails or screws don't come out on their own.
@BrucesShop2 жыл бұрын
Correct. This is an older video. I didn't have much back then.
