The old timers simply administered the horse manure from a healthy horse because it has all the horse probiotics needed. Costs nothing and is effective. Foals eat their mother's manure to seed their gut with the necessary probiotics also. No different. It also doesn't hurt to add a little sugar so the bacteria has something to eat and stay alive until the horse's regular meal gets to his gut.

I watched a marathon of Dr Pol episodes and Lucy the Zebra was in two episodes this one and a later one, she was getting a little better by the end in this one (if anyone wondering what her injury was she was kicked in the head by her mother) but by the other later episode apparently because she was so over medicated at such a young age it badly damaged her guts and her health deteriated and they sadly had to put her down.

Just like in humans animals need good bacteria to digest the salads they eat. We eat real yogurt to replace ours. Can zebras and horses have yogurt? Just curious.
@tarantulady85659 жыл бұрын
Joyce Joseph You could probably make yogurt out of the corresponding animal's milk (zebra yogurt for zebras, so forth & so on) by adding yogurt starter, which I see at my local health food store. Just a packet of beneficial bacteria. I do know that some animals can't be fed cow milk...can't remember which, except for one: elephants. lol 😊 An easier course would be to sprinkle the appropriate probiotics onto the animal's normal food. I put probiotics on my pets' food a couple times a month, and always after a course of antibiotics to rebuild the gut bacteria. (People should do that, too.) I wonder if the same probiotics could be used for various animals. Probably not. I assume it would have to be tailored for effectiveness. Interesting to ponder...
@JustElly9 жыл бұрын
indeed some animals you shouldn't feed milk based stuff it has to do with after a certain age they can't handle it anymore. Others you can only feed theyre own milk. But in these ages you have special stuff for these kind of problems ^^ I have a pony who has some stomach issues after he gets certain treatments. And we just order a sort of past which fixes his imbalance. But there are lot of other ways. In cows they tend to feed feces from a healthy cow to calfs or cows that aren't well. So many ways.
@JJDigitalartStudio9 жыл бұрын
I have also heard of fecal transplants in humans. I wonder if that would work in horses as well.

Sadly this Zebra ended up passing away later on. They never could figure out what was wrong with it. It wasn't just 'gut imbalance', they tried a variety of things but the poor thing was too weak and frail to be receptive to anymore medication and was euthanized.
@cellogirl11rw555 жыл бұрын
I have a sneaking suspicion that she may have developed a clostridium dificil infection in her gut because the antibiotics destroyed all of her protective GI flora, leaving her susceptible to this deadly bacteria.

I'm not sure if that Zebra is old enough to digest lactose content in Yogurt. Most mammals when they grow old lack lactase enzyme. A lactobacillus extraction from Yogurt might do.
@RizaHariati8 жыл бұрын
Rahil Sethi Interesting! because lactose in yoghurt comes from a cow's mom which is less than lactose that comes from a zebra's mom.

Why does the zebra have brown stripes not black
@icerose218 жыл бұрын
+Sofie and Paris Just like how humans have different skin colors, so does every other animal. Zebra's Stripes can range from a light brown (usually caused by amelanosi) to a very dark black. While most babies are born with lighter stripes, they darken as they get older, but some may just stay brown.
@kennedysexton36797 жыл бұрын
It's just how that one is, it's like how brown bears aren't always brown. some are tan, some are black, and etc. just how it is
@melissapate6727 жыл бұрын
Actually, it just hasn’t shed out it’s thick winter coat. They usually get sun bleached, and appear lighter, especially on younger animals. His/Her being sick for a long period of time can also effect the coat. After this foal regains it’s health, and sheds out of it’s winter coat, it should regain it’s shiny black stripes
