When I got my first horse I was bullied a lot about his conformation. He stands camped under and was (when i first got him anyway) quite scrawny. I was 13 and he was 4 and he was (and still is!) the most steady, reliable, wonderful little guy. Immediately stopped if i started slipping off, never bucked or spooked and I swear he took care of me. Despite his young age I knew he would be the perfect first horse. It still hurt a lot having people with better bred horses tell me how terrible my pony was :( I love this video! Definitely disposition over conformation :D

Thanks for watching! I was bullied too about my first horse. I know the feeling. She ended up being absolutely perfect for me and I’ll always be grateful for her. Sometimes people bully for other reasons... jealousy, insecurities, resentment, etc. It sounds like you had an amazing first horse too. Good for you. ❤️

I was bullied as a child too and on top of that totaly ostrisized from any of the clubs and competitions for my old appaloosa. "my horse is a throughbred, oh appaloosas are slow" " My horse is arabian yours is just a big head cayuse" "your horse is just an old appaloosa cowpony it can never jump" Well jump he did, often , on his own over 4 foot fences to get into the neighbors garden lol I used to jump him myself ... tackless. he was smart as a whip and spirited yet sweet and gentle as could be to be around. In researching his pedegree now, I've discovered he was a sport horse decended from a whole line of famous arabians and throughbreds back to secretariat, and the top appaloosa racer Navaho britches and other champion racers and show horses and even related to Mr ED lol. So yeah little did THEY know. In my heart I always knew he was a champion no matter what they said, he was to me. And I was right. If they are the right horse for you then there is no horse that can be better. They are a champion of your heart and all of heaven knows it.

CantioHorse wow..it makes me so sad that their is so much bullying and entitlement within the equestrian community. Makes me sick. Why can’t we just support each other and bring each other up versus tear others down? My guess is they are insecure and projecting their own issues via bullying.

Ignore them! They'll be talking into the arena dirt when their fancy ponies spook and buck them off! I'll take a "ugly" horse/pony with a good temper over a fancy, but spooky horse any day!

Thanks for the video! I have a little grade quarter horse mare built a lot like Nikko. She is a little butt high and long in the back, but is the safest horse I have ever owned. I have had her for 2 1/2 years and she has never done anything bad under saddle. I got her from a rescue that saves horses from a kill auction. We are starting her in basic dressage to try to get her to engage her back end a little more. She will never be a great dressage horse but I am an older rider, ripe old age of 56, and she keeps me safe.

My horse is built just like this. Butt high, mildly swaybacked. We discovered that he had an old fracture in his withers, which caused kissing spine. Like you said horses built like this have a hard time lifting their backs and rounding out, but it’s super important that we get them doing just that and building their core muscles to protect their spine!

My pony's back is like that too and I thought he was sway backed but he has built up a lot of top line and still looks the same so I think it is just confirmation. His belly hangs down too 😂

The people who think horses are worthless because they do not meet the beauty standards of what a horse should look like, need look in a mirror at themselves. I would say confirmation only really matters if it puts the horses health at risk, or if the horse is lacking in too much overall muscle.

The only thing I don't understand is we don't pick out people for bad or good confirmation, that'd be pretty bad if we did. Obviously there is a reason for the confirmation that helps with important factors in owning, caring, and choosing horses, but yet I have heard a ton of claims that certain horses don't have good confirmation and certain breeds. Personally I don't think any horse is flawed, and sometimes the conformation topic makes me irritated. Especially when it comes to horses like Thoroughbreds, Saddlebreds, Standardbreds, Akhal Tekes, and other long legged breeds, often times the QH people say these horses have bad conformation, but yet these horses are built for an entirely different purpose. Like one horse that was considered to have bad conformation in history was the Barb. Infact history tried it's hardest to wipe out the breed completely because of having bad conformation. The breed in its true state is practically non existant, but yet to this day, we years later learned to admire this breed that we lost as they're physical qualities and personalities are now found in the Berber Horse (Closest true verison to the Barb), Iberian Horses such as the Andalusian, Alter Real, and Lusitano, Friesan, Lippizanner, Paso Fino, Criollo, Azteca, Spanish Barb, Thoroughbreds, Drafts, Pony Breeds, Standardbreds, Appaloosa, Mustangs, and our most favorite of all the Quarter Horse. Even back in history the people who owned these horses found them to be very tough, fast, and very suitable for their African environment as well as colder temperatures transported to Europe. Whether the Iberian was first or the Barb is unknown but we know in fact they are directly related and looking at them it is no wonder. Another nearly extinct horse that was considered to have bad confirmation is the Akhal Teke, Once known as the Extinct Turkomen, was loved by a lot of the muslim, ottoman, and turkish empires. However often mentioned as Arabian horses by Europeans, where Arabians are confused much in history of breed traces. The Turk was not loved by the Europeans at all, and maybe thats why they aren't mentioned in the horse history! These horses to them were considered to have bad and small feet, long legs, bad conformation, very unpleasing looking and angular or rigid bone structure, high withers, noticed to be thin and sickly looking, not strong enough to care a rider. Mean while these horses were admired by people like the Ottoman empire for instance, who were super good fighters with good horses, and no one really ever messed with them because they were just good. The turks were built for the harsh terrian and although out of the Arabian and Barb they were the slowest, they could out run any of the other horses successfully in their rough terrian, they were fully able to handle it. Not only that, but their were like two accounts of Europeans riding a Turkomen, and were shocked by their clearly wrong ideas of them, one European took this horse to war, although people thought the horse was sickly looking with an ewy neck, this guy found how durable and strong this horse was , how big of a heart this horse had far exceeded some of their European horses in amazing ways, and could handle things a lot of their "Good Conformation Horses" horses could not. Another European got this horse some how and he used the horse for showing, I think it was like eventing, jumping and dressage, everyone was shocked with the horse but this horse more than excelled in the sport world. Much like the Thoroughbred today, the Turk was known as the Grey Hound of The Horse World. Because of their trotting gait, they could trot for many many miles in rough conditions, light build and gait allowed it to conserve energy for far distances, they can go go go and never get tired, sounds like a Saddlebred trait, and their small feet made it suitable for the rocky terrain in those areas. We clearly see all of their structure in the Thoroughbred such as small feet, high withers, long neck, lean body, and compact muscles designed for being light and speed. We also see the turk in horses like the Saddlebred, Marwari, Kathiawari, Warmbloods/Sport Horses, Trotters, Gaited Breeds, and including bringing back a new/old breed called the Nez Perce Horse. So too some people anything that is not a qh has bad conformation and I do not like this. Especially when this horse's favored qualities all came from a horse we nearly wiped out due to conformation flaws. In fact the quarter horses came out of a pony called the chickasaw horse (Which came from Spanish Barbs) now extinct in true form and bred out into the Florida Cracker horse which came from the Spanish Janet. Also, hot breeds are not bad, infact they are very sensible and smart, just very misunderstood. Even things like, Your horse looks like a Tb, what breed is he? They answer back QH, I say they look like they have tb in them, they get all defensive and say he is a QH. I look back in their pedigree only to find a few horses away is a Thoroughbred, or Appendix. Why, all qh's have TB in them it is fact, but people don't want to give credit to Thoroughbreds or any lean mean breeds. Their clearly gaited horse is a Qh, I have heard that too. Just like some people say mares are wild, and geldings are better, yet plenty of lesson programs use mares all the time, plenty of mares are used for beginners as they are more aware and sensitive to their riders, tending to care for them. Or mares are crabby, but most mares really aren't mean. Not all mares are moody and crabby I think it is just peoples stereotype perspective. That being said, if you were to look at people, I probably have very poor confirmation and that actually makes me feel really bad about myself lols.

as an OTTB actually I don't think this horse has terrible conformation.. I think it has the correct conformation for what it was bred to do..run fast. Look at a picture of a cheetah compared to another cat. And the cheetahs body type and compare that to this horse and its long back and hind legs, long low neck etc. The conformation isn't wrong persay aside from the bit of swayback as you show , but they just built for a different purpose. I think their being ridden so young as yearings and 2 year olds to race is very detrimental on their back and can end up with 'kissing spine' syndrome. Always something to watch out on OTTB.

Great video. Very informative. So he lets his belly hang out a little bit. Don’t we all? If he’s wonderfully sweet, I think that’s all that matters. Just another horse lover.❤

Hi Charlie! Thanks for checking in! Yes, we are currently experiencing Hurricane Florence. I am a bit further inland but my mom lives on the beach in NC. She has lost power, received lots of rain and wind and has lost lots of shingles on her bourse so far. As for us, we have tagged our horses with our contact information if they happen to get loose in the storm. Our main concern is losing power and trees falling on fences. We have put out extra water troughs and hay and have cut down trees that already look dead that we thought might fall anyway. Luckily, the storm has weakened significantly and now flooding is the major concern for the area. Thank you for asking! ❤️
