I quite like the constant tension clips. VW have used them for decades and I've never had one leak due to the clip. They are a joy to use once you get the special release tool that works much better than pliers (people who use pliers always say the clips are crap). All plastic parts of a cooling system needs treating with suspension after about 10 years and should just be replaced at 15 if they made it that long. They just crack at random and ruin your day and maybe your engine. Those plastic bungs in the stat and rad, plus that bleed pipe union between the stat, rad and expansion tank are a classic for breaking an aging 300Tdi. bit pricy but maybe an Allisport rad is the way to go as they don't have plastic tanks but a recore on the old brass one is also a good idea, though to be fair a plastic one should do the job for 10 years and the core will be beginning to deteriorate after that anyway. Wish I'd had a low coolant warning on my old 300Tdi RRC, that cost me about £700 in 1 second when it blew the head gasket and warped the head. You could tell the HG had gone as coolant was spraying out round the fully tightened jubilee clips. I think your weak clip let go the moment you started holding higher RPM in 5th gear and the sustained pump pressure was too much for it, dispite it not being warm enough at that point to add the full operating thermal pressure.

Genuine Jubilee clips in Stainless steel 👍🏻

Maybe maybe, but the constant tension clamps are calling me....

@@lrworkshop 😂.... We've been sold the idea that constant tension clamps are best for plastic fittings and allow for expansion... I can't help feeling that they are cheap and quick to install on the production line 😉

I specifically went for the single moulded hose because I thought less joints to fail. Although stainless steel hose clamps aren't that expensive. Although I have the same tank cap, I haven't yet made up a circuit to give me the low level warning, when I get the engine back in I'll have to make sure I do it!

It seems that one-piece hose is becoming less and less available, and the later type is becoming the norm these days. I can definitely recommend the warning light!

Many years ago I had a severe leak from the top of the fuel tank on a Td5 Defender, left a trail all the way up the road. After a rain shower you can still see where the diesel was as that part dries last.

I have always used either original land rover Norma pipe clips with 6mm head or stainless steel Jubilee clips on my V8's and TDi but since my TD5 i have been using the original Constant pressure clips and I think these are much better. Only think is they are not stainless, but the material is thick enough, plus in Malta we dont have ice nor salt ( except in the sea 🤣🤣) I am trying to fit a low level alarm on my TD5 tank at the moment.

same thing happend to me mine was a hose rubbing on a clip and wore through after about 7 years my coolant sensor saved me too best 23 quid ever spent

Absolutely!

Definitely get you metal radiator re cored and re fit it. Were you concerned that the engine would have overheated in the 25 seconds of coolant lose? I would have happily driven my 200tdi the 3 miles home without coolant in these British temperatures.
@lrworkshop11 ай бұрын
Not in the 25 seconds, but potentially by the end of the drive. I know lots of Defenders wrecked by having lost coolant, so I wasn't going to take the chance!

Moral of the story - use stainless steel hose clamps in corrosive environments🙂

My genuine pipe has lemon clips fitted, the aftermarket ones use jubilee clips.

Stainless jubilee clips are the way to go, dont get the cheap chinese ones though they still rust on the fastening bolt
@harveysmith10011 ай бұрын
constant tension clamps are far better. Those worm style ones looked like cheap Chinese rubbish. We have all fitted them. Great video to show no matter how well maintained a vehicle is, the smallest of Chinese parts can leave you stranded or worse. Quality hoses and clamps are the unsung hero of the engine room.

They were cheap rubbish. The OEM ones are a lot better. I should have replaced them from the start, but oh well!

There are many products that stop corrosion, old engine oil is free and it can be diluted with old diesel, invest in 2 oil cans, one fresh one old, squirt squirt lol.
@gs18811 ай бұрын
That may stop the clips rusting but it wouldn't do the rubber hoses underneath much good!
@royblackburn116311 ай бұрын
@gs188 yes you're absolutely correct, just a smear keep it off rubber. The old saying no dry threads, no dry gaskets is still common sense, drilling out broken rusty bolt's takes much longer than putting a squirt of oil on it. Stripping dry spark plug threads in alloy heads is funny. Some people don't take it on board and do it again and end up screwing the helicoil out ha ha ha.

Why would you look at those rotten jubilee clips and say if it ain’t broke don’t fix it? This is one situation where you go stuff this, they need to go in the bin now, not later

I Love The Styling Of British Cars & Land Rovers, But Not Dependable.., My Mother Had Jaguar XJ6, Love Styling, Ride Independent Rear End, Wood Cash, Leather Interior, But Always The Smell Of Gas at Different Times, Probably Due To Fuel Injector Systems & Fuel Pumps, Maintenance Of Mechanics Outrageous. My Brother Had Triumph TR6, Nice Sports Car, Styling, Handling, But Duel Carburetors, & Electrical Switches Downfall. That's Way The Japanese Cars & Fuel Shortage in the 70's, Due To Middle East Problems Caused The Downfall Of British & American Car Companies. LAND ROVER Type Vehicle Needs To Be Manufactured Again at price range to be competitive with the JEEP. It would sell to Americans if price was right without all the trills & cost of the RANGE ROVER. Sincerely, Mr.T.
@gs18811 ай бұрын
This truck is nearly 30 years old though. Japanese vehicles suffer coolant leaks at that age too (90's vehicles in general are no longer on the road in the UK due to corrosion regardless of where they were made). The main issue here was poor quality replacement parts which is a cause of breakdown on any brand of vehicle.

decent clips would sort you out
@garypoulton731111 ай бұрын
Buy the one piece hose. They are cheap, keep a spare in the car, and always, always use stainless clamps. That multi monstrosity you have gives lots of potential leaks, and that plastic will go hard and snap. Horrible, stupid design.
