In that time, when she and her sisters were growing up, Mary and her sisters would only see their family for an hour, while the nanny and everyone else cared for them. So in a way, Carson is more of a father figure to her than her own father was growing up.

This scene of the baby and the killing off of a character is as dramatic as it is unfair. I have a story that is along that line if you care to read further. I did genealogy research for a biography about my 105 year old grandmother, 1896 - 2001. During one talk, she told me her younger brother Alfred went to Europe and fought in several battles during WWI. He returned back to the states and less than 2 years later, caught Influenza during the epidemic and died at 22. That someone should go through the horrors of a world war, multiple times staring death down at such a young age... then finally return back home only to die from the flu-- is on a level of being ironically cruel that I don't understand. This episode of the series drove that impression home to me.

My grandfather was a WWII Marine in the Pacific. He was in multiple battles that included the infamous Tarawa. (Look it up.) He never talked about it, and we, his grandchildren, were told to never ask. He was severely injured and was medically evacuated out. One of the other guys who was also shot and made a morbid joke about how he would live through getting shot in war, only to die in a car accident. And then my grandfather exclaimed: "And you know what? He sure enough did! That man died a few years later in the US in a car accident!"

They seem to have different tunes for different couples. I remember in a Christmas one when it had three widowed characters-Mary, Tom and Isobel-all talking about their memories, the background music changed. This was playing whilst Mary was talking, and then it was a different tune in the background whilst Tom was talking.

I should start by acknowledging how this comment thread was written before the film's release. Oddly enough, that piece (Such Good Luck) was incorporated into the ending theme from the film. The piece starts with a slow introduction (similar to a part of Life After Death), then goes into the suite (the Downton suite that derives from the main theme). But, at the part where the suite usually goes into a slower 3/4 tempo, Such Good Luck is instead incorporated as the rest of the closing piece (100 Years of Downton). I was perplexed, since that is Mary and Matthew's theme...as much as I like Such Good Luck, it seemed a strange choice to use.

With Sybil’s death, the remaining Crawley girls found themselves with the brother they never had in Branson. Branson, like Carson, pushes Mary to be strong and come out of her grief. Lord Grantham wants to protect her as she grieves, even though his approach needs work, its coming from the right place. Carson, however, is the only one that strikes the right balance for Mary, allowing her to grieve, to feel what she feels but reminding her of how strong she is and how to process her grief.
@yankeeangel26
@yankeeangel26 5 жыл бұрын
Yes. One thing I found really uncomfortable after Matthew's death was that Lord Grantham seemed a little too happy to have control of the estate back, especially considering that he had always claimed Matthew was like a son to him. It was obvious that a big part of the reason he tried to shut Mary out was not just because she was grieving but because he wanted things back the way they were. Carson does the exact opposite here - we know how loyal he is to Lord Grantham and how uncomfortable he is with change. But he puts all of that aside to comfort Mary and to help her get better and start living life again, even pretty much saying that her father is wrong about how strong she is.

I think the reason that Edith wasn't really anyone's favorite is because the other two sisters had much more personality. Sybil was kind, thoughtful, and very open to the changing world. Mary is intelligent, poised, and was the favorite of Carson's and her father's. Throughout the series, Sybil was nice to Edith but their plot lines never mixed much. To Mary, Edith was just there. She was able to manipulate Edith and make her feel bad. Because of that, we mostly pitied Edith, but didn't think much of it because she was jealous.

in the noble families of 19th or 20th century, the children were distant from their parents(i am not talking about mary's family) and they mostly grew up under the cares of their nannies, servants or the maids, that's why those noble children develop a parent-children relationship with their servants, so did mary and carson. i ve seen in most aristocratic dramas that the servants defended the noble children or how they comforted the little lords or the ladies, it is always a very loving scene for me.

In the official Downton Abbey book, Fellows goes into that. How the adults viewed it as giving the children relief from the rigorous strain of etiquette in the dining room, lounge, and such. The children would see their parents in the evenings only once or twice a day, led by a nanny. These were very formal events and often scary and confusing to the small children.

Is it a knife in the gut for anyone else when you look back and see how poorly almost everyone treated Matthew in the beginning? No one said it out loud but they treated him worse than dirt even though he had no choice in the matter. It cuts that much deeper when you look back and see how many catastrophies Matthew prevented not just for the family, but for the entire Downton Abbey region as a whole. It truly speaks for the good in his character that when he died not a single person had anything bad to say. I only wish we could have seen the initial reactions and funeral instead of the six month time jump.

Mary's grief over Matthew was a well done story and her and Carson bring are so moving. She was the first little girl in the family and they love each other. Mary needs someone in her corner and it's Carson. People like to hate on Mary but they don't understand that unlike her sisters, Downton has always been her responsibility, and her life plan according to the time different. Her sisters could marry who they like but she was supposed to marry the heir. The first heir died on the Titanic and she was lined up to marry Matthew. People who say they should have killed off Mary don't get that Dan Stevens wanted to leave the show. Like the love affair on Greys, you can't have Matthew walk out on Mary, it wouldn't be possible for the story line. Mary exhibits kindness to many and forward thinking through out the seasons. She puts on a tougher facade because she doesn't have the luxury to entertain alternate life plans and once the love of her life dies, she is especially responsible for the estate and all those who depend on it.

Oh, I was absolutely mortified when Matthew died, especially under the emotional roller coaster circumstances of new parenthood and such joy and then, "WHAM!" Matthew is gone. Oh, what a PLOT! But for Downton fans who'd been watching from the beginning, I can't say that I didn't "suspect" that something unexpected and sudden might happen. It seems that a running theme many times on Downton has been "wow, we're all really happy" and THEN, "OMG tragedy strikes, and usually very suddenly". But that's Downton and it's what makes it so great to watch and to continue to watch. Missed the character of Matthew SO MUCH though, it was a bit hard to get back into the watching groove. As others have mentioned, the character of Branson really helped heal the viewers. And it was wonderful to see Isobel Crawley find love late in life as well, as she totally deserved it.

In today's world of the super highway, freeways and thruways, we tend to forget the dangers that existed on what were essentially country roads - lots of sharp turns with poor visibility around the curves, very sharp rising hills with no visibility on the other side of the hill, streams that should be covered with bridges but instead flow onto the road, traffic going in both directions on a road really only wide enough for one vehicle, pot holes and rough to no pavement at all. One wonders in the early part of the 20th century just how many people died in automobile accidents or if figures were even kept.

In rural England there are still a lot of roads like this. Roads with high speed limits of 60mph that by rights should be no more than 30. The amount of times I've crawled around a hairpin bend or blind corner, to find my sixth sense correct, and some damned fool in a show car come rocketing around like he owns the road! And that's before we get into deer prancing about all over the roads 😥

Everyone is talking about Mary and Carson BUT WHAT ABOUT ISOBEL ?? She lost her husband, her son, probably most of her family at this point, and she was feeling so helpless with nobody there to fully support her through her grief Mary had her parents, Edith and Carson all there to catch her when she falls but Isobel has no one to properly be there to help her through it.

How many deaths actually were there in the series? These are the ones I remember. Mr Pamukh. William, Lavinia, Vera Bates, Sybil, Matthew, Henry Talbot's friend who died in a car race, and Mr Green. Have I forgotten any? Think there's a death that'll rock the family in the film, but I haven't seen that yet.

I'll say it right here right now: Matthew should not have died. His actor leaving the show is not an adequate excuse. The characters and plot points should serve the story and killing off Mathew benefitted neither.

The problem is since Downtown Abby started they wanted to Marry Mary off to Lord Gramthams heir first Patrick then Matthew as they wanted Mary to be the next Countess of Grantham after Cora but unfortunately Mary was never meant to have that role. It looks likely the next Countess of Grantham will be Mary's son George's future wife
