He knew that she would’ve noticed if he’d died, Anna was right that he didn’t mean it when he said she wouldn’t have. That adds to Thomas’ heartbreak because very few people he’s loved in his life have returned his love (look at the Duke and Jimmy), and Sybil did. They were true friends.

Seeing how upset Thomas was over her death was so touching, yet tragic. It’s rare that his emotionally vulnerable side shows, and that little scene with Anna comforting him while he mourned the kindness his dear friend showed him always tugs at my emotions :’( Also the fact that Anna, despite everything Thomas has done against her and Bates, wasted no time at all in checking in on him and gently comforting him while he cried reminded me why I love her character so much- She’s an absolute angel :)

I loved this scene too . It really highlighted Anna s kindness and understanding. It also showed Thomas vulnerable side indeed but also how difficult and foreign it is to him . His immediate réaction to sadness/ unhappiness/ despair is nastiness . " she would n t know if I had died " . It is not what he thinks , and Anna says so ( if only because he is bowling his eyes out ), but that s the first thing he says . Which made me rewatch the scenes in which he immediately says something nasty when something horrible happens differently

@@marionarda2790 Thomas must've has a hard time trying to be something he is not and that is why he shows harshness as if he wants the world to hate him and for him to find less love and people to keep close. He is so afraid of being intemiate and loving to anyone .. because of how conflicted he is about himself and how the world treat him for it. Even when the family is not close minded about it, the people often display their disapproval and distance from his situation. Very few people saw it and accepted it.

This is my problem with the writing of downton abbey in general though.. some plotlines are repetitive.. Honestly I love the show but with rewatching I am learning just how mediocre the writing is. Characters act out of character all the time to suit plot lines, some story lines drag on and on, some stories that would have been really interesting happen of screen or get rushed trough, some stories get repeated in a different coat of paint and some of the drama's are just carbon copy repeats. Also characters acting unnatural or being mysterious for no good reason other then creating tension, and the glorifying of rich people (crawleys/servants relationship is very unrealistic) and demonising of the working class (every poor person trying to change the system is portrayed as a unlikable or agressive or rude or naive or something else unfavorable whilst nasty upper class people are portrayed as the exception the other upperclass people look down on instead of that being the rule (like larry gray, who held opinions normal for upper class at that time yet the series acts as if his opinions are the odd one out for upperclass at that time) etc. I understand downton abbey is fiction and entertainment though, but not everyone seems to understand this series has nothing to do with historical accuracy and the sub par writing that escaped my notice first time around is hidden because of the amazing acting. This cast is just amazing.

Unfortunately the characters who died the actors wanted to leave the show so it’s really not the writers fault to a certain extent. Ideally they could’ve written the character a storyline that gave them a chance to come back like Sybil going off to be a nurse somewhere or better yet college in America and Mathew being so disfigured by the wreck that a new actor is revealed under his face bandages. But they choose not to and honestly it sucks.

With Jessica (Sybil), she said from the outset that she didn't want to be typecast or written to come back so that left her few options, being cast as part of the main family. It was basically leave alone, with Tom if Allen left the show or, being part of the family, be killed off. That said, they did make hers not only one of the most tragic but, especially for the time, very realistic. While quick birth is often the first method of treatment, Magnesium sulphate, which is now often used to treat preeclampsia and eclampsia wasn't discovered until the 1930s, almost a decade after this. So while the doctors knew of the condition and symptoms, once it had set in, they wouldn't have been able to save Sybil, either at the house or the hospital. 😢 Vaginal birth was the main form of delivery at the time, with caesarean being rare because it was still not heavily practised. Also, I believe Sybil's blood pressure wouldn't have returned to normal levels soon after the birth, as she was expressing high levels of protein in her urine. My mother went through preeclampsia. All I can say is that I am thankful for modern medicine.

Several deaths affected me more, a main character in Mcleods daughters. Wont use names to avoid spoiling who it is for those still watching/planning to watch but her car crash/cliff dive while working together with another character to save a baby in the backseat will always be the most impactfull one to me. Another big one was in ER in the episode 2 main characters of that season got stabbed during I believe a holiday celebration with a cake knife. One of those characters died. Angel season 1 had a very impactful one for me too though not so much in the death itself, but rather in the way the episode ended with the deceased character having a recorded video left behind they where filming that episode which the living characters played, and the characters ending with the final line of that recording being ''thats it? am I done?'' OMG. Buffy had two huge ones also, one I cant even rewatch because it hits to close to home. An episode called the body I believe.. and the other character is one that gets shot of all things. Demons and vampires everywhere, but this character dies because of a gun. Sybil comes after all of these. But she does rank high considering I have seen a big amount of tv series.

At that advanced stage in her pregnancy, a C-section might have saved her life-or it might not have. Remember, medical care and surgery was not like it is now. They only thought she had eclampsia right as she was about to deliver, whereas nowadays mothers know months before their delivery date. She might have lived, or she might’ve died on the operating table, terrified and without holding her baby as she did in this plot line.

@@Kelaiah01 Well, in fairness, that's looking at things from the meta-narrative perspective of the production of the show; _in-narratively_ , of course it stands that they "should" have listened to Clarkson earlier on. (Even though he later is persuaded by the Dowager to... shift... his commentary on things in order to help save Robert and Cora's relationship, we as an audience know that although not a certainty, she *would* have had a better chance of survival if they had done the C-section. The in-narrative is where the narrative "truth" lies, not the meta-narrative where the actress just wanted to leave the series which is of course the real-life/mundane reason.)

Easy to say in hindsight. Meanwhile Robbert was listening to the advise of 2 different doctors. One of which knew Sybil but ALSO had misdiagnosed pretty badly previously. He had no medical knowledge. It's not so easy to make decisions when somebody you love is in pain and might be at risk. You want to do whats best, but you dont know whats best. Whatever you chose it's a gamble. If Clarkson was wrong, and he'd listend to him, that could have resulted in needless cutting into Sybil likely causing a painful death that was wholy unneeded because she was fine. If Clarkson was right and he'd listend to him that could have resulted in Sybil, very very very likely, still dying as she's cut open withoud even the chance to see her daughter. If the other doctor was right and he was listend to, that could have resulted in Sybil just delivering her child, and things being well after. If the other doctor was wrong and listend too, that could have resulted in Sybil dying as she did end up doing in the show. the fact is there where 2 scenario's she would very likely die one of which allowed her to hold her child. There where 2 scenario's she could have lived, one of which allowing her to not go trough a traumatic surgery. People are seriously overplaying Sybil's chances in this story, and downplaying Robberts choice as being not only understandable but what most sane parents would have chosen as the results are mostly better. In the case Sybil would be fine anyway, she would not get cut open for no reason. In the case Sybil was not fine, she would very likely have died either way. The one where she was cut open being the more horrible way to go between the 2. Roberts choice was not a bad one based on the information he had and the fact he had to make it under dures. It just happend to result in a tragedy anyway. Never blame people for things like this in hindsight.. You cant blame a person who has no medical knowledge, for chosing the wrong doctors advise. Because not every doctor is always right or always wrong. If even the doctors cant always tell correctly, how is somebody like Robert supposed to?

@@samprimera5545 I know this is an old comment, but I had to respond! The tragedy of this situation they wrote still gets me. Unfortunately, working in OB, I know there was absolutely nothing he could have done in that time to save her. Even nowadays, once a woman with eclampsia starts seizing, the only cures are expedited delivery and a magnesium sulphate infusion. They hadn't yet discovered the benefits of magnesium in that regard (they knew ofc about mag and eclampsia, but no one tried putting the two together until the 1930s), and so even if he'd performed CPR and resuscitated her, she would have just kept on seizing until he gave up. I completely fault the character for dismissing Clarkson's concerns when she still could have been saved, but once Sybil started seizing, it was too late for anyone to do anything.

Looking back at this, when I hear Sybbie crying at the background after everyone's forced to grapple and comprehend the fact that Sybil just died breaks me. It's a cinematic masterpiece in story telling. We didn't need any dialogue to tell how much this will affect everyone. The people who were present in that room upon hearing the baby cry realized that Sybil gave birth to a baby girl she had only met, and now she's dead. She left her husband and her child. The child would grow old without Sybil. The look on Mary, Edith and Matthew's face is telling and I love how they chose to focus on their expressions to tell the story instead of showing us Sybil's lifeless body.

Mary had given up before it came to the last moment of Sybil and she's already mourning deep in her sorrow, yet Edith is still in shock and uncertainty and expects with every fibre that the doctor could give some hopeful reply, but when she sees that look on his face, she realizes Sybil is gone and she breaks down. This is so painful.
@cheetahinireland18

Yes, I loved how Mary and Edith were scripted and acted during Sybil's death, very true to their characters. Edith is lingering in the back while Sybil is dying while Mary is leaning over Sybil and talking to her, like she can will her sister to breath...until she realizes that she can't, and there's nothing that she can do and Sybil is dying right before her eyes. Then Mary goes numb and backs away, because she knows she's already gone. Edith needs to see the doctor confirm it and then reacts with horror and sorrow. But Mary has already gone cold with it.

I was deeply sad at Sybil's death for two reasons: she was the nicest and most giving of the sisters and fun with a strong sense of justice, and two I felt that they could have saved her with an earlier C section no matter how unpredictable. It's just too bad they didn't have enough knowledge to take a chance.

Mr Carson and Coras reaction is what got me. Even though Mr Carson’s reaction wasn’t as emotional as the rest, it does hurt most when you think he knew Sybil from the day she was born unlike the staff. He was there for her first birthday, her 18th. He probably saw her trying to take her first steps and heard her first words. He saw her grow from a little girl to a strong, independent and kind hearted woman. He may have not known her like her parents and sisters did but still, he was there and he watched her grow up. He probably thought he’d never live to see any of the daughters pass away but he did and it was the youngest and most kindest one. As for Cora, any mother’s reaction would be heartbreaking. She lost her baby, her beaut. Someone who she adored from the moment of her existence. No mother should EVER have to watch their child die. No one. And I have to say that Sybil was kind of like the Diana of her time.

In the midst of my tears and crying I gained a new-found love for Thomas in this scene. I already felt a connection to him from the start due to him being gay like me, but he really was mean at the start and I couldn't be dealing with that at all. But this scene, it proved that he had emotions, and that he did care deeply for people, regardless of what he showed on the outside. It brought a completely new side of his character into the light and this quickly secured his place in my heart and made him the best character in the show for me.
