That first paragraph hits hard, I honestly couldn't relate more. I'm struggling to even wake up and actually go hunting when my alarm goes off in the morning. I'm not excited about my hunts. I overthink every little detail about the hunt ahead, and just end up frustrated when I see nothing, jealous when someone else get's something, and overall miserable about the whole experience. I think reform is ahead for a lot of hunters in this age, realizing that all of our deer studies, youtube videos, and new technologies are great in and of themselves but all together seem to lend to this mental over-complication of everything. I miss when I was a young teen, knew nothing about hunting, had no gear, and simply loved the hell out of it anyway. Gotta simplify things and get back to that early passion.

It’s because of hunting social media. Any well known hunter on KZbin has a KZbin channel because they already have good hunting. whether it be due to money and private land, connections that let them hunt private or they live in an area with access to prime public land they became hunting “influencers” because they were already successful. Guys who struggle every year don’t have a KZbin channel because no one would watch someone who never shoots deer. The problem is the rest of us watch these 1% guys and think that our hunts should be the same. It’s a small percentage of people who have been blessed with the resources to access big deer/lots of deer. In my opinion there’s tons of hunters who are WAAAYYYY better in the woods than most known KZbinrs but they have limited success because their area has too much pressure, not enough deer, etc. If you could call up this guy and hunt his farm you would get deer too

I’m in the same boat. Every single time I’ve gotten close to elk this year it’s been blown due to other hunters. Hunting the west has been ruined by social media you can’t go to any spot anymore without dozens of morons running around the mountains especially out of staters.

The northern Midwest region for hunting and fishing is just different man. Feel so connected to the earth. Idk if that just me being poetic or whatever. I’m from the south side of Chicago and when I get a chance to go to the yoop, northern MN, and hell even northern Wisconsin it just makes me more at peace naturally. I’m happier.

I was watching a standard hunting show before I turned to KZbin and saw this new video, it’s amazing the difference. Your videos and meateater in general are captivating, realistic, and you show what most hunters go through. It’s not just a manicured hunt that goes great every time and it’s great to show the real side of things. Beautiful buck too!

I love this program that Doug has set up. I know that there are many hunters that wouldn’t mind helping the landowner out in exchange for access. Would love to see this start spreading

I think this is the best hunting video I’ve seen in a while. Little bit of fishing, low in the story of losing all that doe meat then a successful buck recovery. Awesome character on that deer, too

Can’t say enough good about Scott Sorensen and his store, the Fly Box Fly Shop! I was up on the north shore of Lake Superior on vacation with my now wife (fiancé at the time), and she wanted to go shopping in town. I decided to go into the fly shop to pick up a bit of gear and look around, and Scott was SO helpful about area waterways that I was totally unfamiliar with. I ended up not getting time to fish and to check out the recommendations from Scott, but he was so willing to help out someone he had absolutely zero obligation to. Great guy!

The opening message of this video hits home. I found myself in the same situation the last few seasons. After 22years of bowhunting I lost the spark. I felt like i was just going through the motions. I was too focused on a trophy to enjoy the experience. This year, I vowed to enjoy the experience and harvested the smallest deer I've killed in all my years of hunting on an out of state hunt. I fished before and after the hunt. And had a blast with a good friend. After the trip, I hunted with family I hadn't had the chance to hunt with in years and harvested a great buck and enjoyed hunting as we traditionally had. The whitetail hunting culture has become toxic in a lot of ways and I hope our hunting traditions survive. As hunters we need to do a better job of enjoying the experience and not focusing on the destination.
@fireplusbirdfilms6517Ай бұрын
Oh man can I relate to this video. I've had some frustrating years lately where I was way to focused on the outcome to enjoy the process of hunting. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that our quarry can sense us better somehow when we are just radiating an intense emotional need to get the kill. I'm not saying we shouldn't be committed to the hunt; personally I'm annoyed by guys who say they want to hunt but don't devote the time and energy to get good and get it done. For many years hunting has been central to my identity and a key focus of my time. I'm looking for that balance between intensity and enjoyment that brings it all together for me and makes the pursuit of game animals rewarding. This year I also refocused my hunts on just enjoying myself, the true reason most of us hunt in this day and age when good meat is easier and cheaper to aquire at the grocery store or the local farms than out in the woods. Even though I fractured my wrist from a bad pre-dawn fall that ended my favorite early season wilderness hunt prematurely, I remembered to chill out enough and filled both my doe and buck tags. I learned some good lessons about listening to my hard-earned hunter's intuition and having the patience to wait for the right opportunity to unfold. Even though I live in the PNW and may never hunt a whitetail, I really enjoy and learn from your content, Mark. Keep making good stories to insipre us.

MeatEater should have episodes where the hunting greats get blindfolded, dropped off at a location with no pre-hunt scouting, cell camera activity or topography maps. Just a stand and a bow and first to get a deer wins. Mark vs Tony, Janis vs Steve, Clay vs Spencer

Once you start eating yourself alive over the sport and losing your joy... You only have a few options.. Get counseling and lighten up, lighten up on your own or quit hunting. I reached the border line on this obsession. I decided that I was going to change the standard of success. Bucks must be 3.5 and does mature. So far I've enjoyed that and had great success. A very balanced field experience. Also say a prayer that your neighbors kill big bucks too. That helps to not be so competitive.

I went fishin a couple weekends ago at my favorite lake and on monday at work my buddy asked what i caught. How many good crappie? I could barely remember. I went fishing. Hit all my favorite spots. Just melted into the lake for 6 hours. Few good ones. But thats not why i go.

Put an average Hunter where Mark Kenyon hunts I bet they get nice deer. Put mark kenyon in the places most average hunters hunt, I bet he’s skunked season after season. KZbinrs don’t do anything unique or harder than anyone else they just have access to better locations including states with good public. Hunt exclusively public in NY next season and you probably won’t even have enough b roll for an episode.
