Its not that hard to understand, theyre turning because the leader is depriving them of food its pretty basic, if they cant eat then theyre going to stop being loyal and turn on the thing depriving them of food which is all that happened here. To all those arguing of why they attacked their queen, they were not doing this to make her live with her actions (animals don't feel guilt or even need to as that could prevent them from hunting their meals and eating to survive) or trying to kill her. They just wanted to put her in her place and strip her of her rank, so they can be lead by a better queen and have a chance to survive as a clan. Now they did make her suffer for her actions, but she doesn't have any remorse for it. Predatory animals don't need it. If they did, they would feel too guilty to kill and eat their prey. Then they would starve.

I believe animals can and do feel guilt, but in situations like this, they weren't intending to make the tyrannical queen feel guilty. They were trying to free themselves, because she was making their lives miserable. Also humans are more emotionally manipulative. We intend make others feel guilty. Other animals don't seem to do that in the wild. They can when necessary, but most of the time, it isn't necessary, even in packs, unless you're a lower rank, trying to trick a higher rank into giving you more privileges. Other than that, there's no actual need for emotional manipulation of others.

No it was nothing to do with any human concept of revenge, surviving in the wild is about preserving yourself and wasting time and energy on trying to kill something when youre starving because of her in the first place is pointless, they need their energy for going off to hunt more game, all they needed to do was wound the queen and ofcourse the lions will do the rest while the rest of the hyenas can save their energies for the next hunt.

That was one of the most interesting videos on animal behavior I've seen in a while. Usually you see the other, weaker members of the pack/clan/pride taking the abuse and the alpha/dominant animal never 'pays any consequences' as to speak, if anything, the other members join in on attacking the weaker one the top animal is currently focusing on. This was a very impressive example of how things can, could and *should* look in extreme situations like that not just hyenas, but also wolves or lions.

Nothing much else happened really; the bullying matriarch was ousted as we saw, she licked her wounds and crawled back in an appropriately submissive manner and returned to the clan as now the lowest ranking female. The new matriarch was more stable, hence the clan became more cohesive and less riven by internal stresses. As a social animal the Spotted Hyena it would be extremely rare to kill one of their own, and even outsiders and nomads are more likely to be driven off than killed. Once the new social order was established and the bullying ex-matriarch suitably demoted, the clan would have just returned to business as normal.

Lakes’ Wild World Nature does it’s thing for a reason. Just as the lion is dominant to the lioness, the female hyena is dominant to the male hyena. I find this oddity fitting to them, as they are very odd animals. If I could change one thing, I would merely make it so they more often than not kill their prey before feeding on it.

Having the use of only 3 legs makes it much harder to defend herself, as well as hunting for food. I’m assuming the other members in the clan allowed her to eat food from their kills until she recovered from her injuries. This would be rare, but not impossible I suppose

@@pauljones6212 The wound on her leg was a slightly deep flesh wound, despite how bad it looked. She healed from that in about a week. Her clan mates took a while to let her feed from their kills, and she was one of the last clan members to eat for a while.

No, they never killed her and never drove her from the clan, they wouldn't needlessly diminish the strength of the clan, the Spotted Hyena having strict hierarchical society. She was in effect demoted to the lowest-ranking female in the clan (but still ranking above males, as all female Hyena do, regardless of age and status). Having lost her standing, she had to wait to eat last of all the females after a kill, and was regularly excluded. The second in command and her chief ally having wrested control, the clan thereafter was a much more harmonious group with far less internal stress and tension and no reason to lessen their numbers by ejecting the former matriarch entirely.
