Be aware that the Notsees didn't invade Hungary because Hungary was an ally of Germany. The ALLIES had to fight their way into Hungary and its castle's bullet holes are still visible. Not too surprising, Hungary is sliding into Fascism again.

In the TV-guide, the real story was summarized. He never did have to 'perform surgery' on himself to hide his circumcision. But he was found out by two people, a medical doctor (army I believe) and his girlfriend's mother. Both promised him they wouldn't tell anyone and they kept their promise. But that would be too unbelievable if the movie went like that.

Pretty much all the things you would believe, they are too comicly to be true, they are true! Do what you need to survive. I don't understand why at the end anyone would have shot him for being a traitor. He was a kid that survived by being part of the enemy. His anxiety must have been much greater than a prisoner's. A prisoner's just depressed for being marginalized, he had to keep his wits and fool everyone, not to mention suppress his teenage lustful desires. I learned Germans weren't circumcised, Those barbarians! I grew up in the US Bible belt. Who wasn't circumcised!?! Gross. It wasn't like he was sent to a concentration camp as an exterminator. Why wouldn't everyone admire how he was able to survive.

For those who are interestet. Salomon "Sally" Perel is still alive. He wrote a book named "Hitlerjunge Salomon" (Hitleryouth Salomon). He still travels through the Country (primary in schools) and tells his story. His Birthplace and House in the city of Peine in lower Saxony is still standing and before the House was sold to a new owner, there was also a Sign so people recognised the house. The new owner, a muslim, removed the sign and a pretty big discussion broke out.

The film shows how terrible it was to be a Jew in both totalitarianisms. Even if you escaped the Nazis in 1939, the Soviets could send you to the gulag because of your foreign nationality or your class origin. Sure, the reds were better than the nazis, but they didn't care that the other side wanted to exterminate you, for them everyone was fodder regardless of the identity.

the reds where not fucking better... gosh... People were sent to russian camps for having german sounding names, not wanting to give up land. German socialists that emigrated to russia were fucking sent to camps just BCS they were germans. The situation in russian camps differed only in that, that germans just straight up killed a people, and russians worked people to death. Soviets were against jews too, they saw them as rich, not socialistic folk. Study then state that soviets were fucking better
