A Jerk's Diagnosis | House M.D.

Upon meeting the family, House begins a bet to determine whether they are his biological parents. After Dan exhibits more symptoms, including a myoclonic twitch and a blocked blood vessel, House diagnoses Dan.

Season 1 Episode 2 "Paternity"
A 16-year-old high school student, Dan (Scott Mechlowicz), starts suffering night terrors and frequent hallucinations after playing lacrosse at school. Dan's parents take him to see Dr. House after receiving a letter that Cameron sent in House's name.Dan suffers from an auditory hallucination during a procedure, however, ruling out House's diagnosis. Using coffee cups from the parents, House does an unauthorized paternity test and discovers that neither parent is biologically related to Dan. House flashbacks to a case he had earlier that involved a mother who did not want her baby to be vaccinated and theorizes that Dan is suffering from a measles virus contracted during his childhood. House confirms his diagnosis with a retinal biopsy and successfully cures Dan.

went to doctor when 19 for head injury got during rugby game--doc said concussion,i said something else--he said go home stay in bed 3 days--i came back 2 days later said it was not concussion--he got mad at me,sent me home,2 days later i collasped from subderal hematoma,almost died--in hospital about 30 days,3 holes in side of head to let the blood clot out-they fired the doctor-i made full recovery

The whole big reveal of this episode had been the fact that the kid had never been immunized against Measles and it had lain dormant in his brain when he caught it. It only in recent days had begun to spread and create the symptoms. unfortunately, the condition was a rare form of encephalitis only typically caused by basically ineffectual Measle variants which have been so mutated that they don't have the ability to quite so easily kill their host and thus lay dormant or asymptomatic and go undiagnosed. Typically a severely mutated virus will just die off on its own or the human immune system will obliterate it. With Measles however its a really insidious virus since its an immunosuppressant (similar to HIV) and since this particular strain was NOT "doing its job" the body doesnt recognize it as a threat until some trigger event causes them to start replicating out of control.

I almost never feel this way but the dads part in this episode was weirdly written. House dismisses the case at first and then wants to talk about the leg twitch and the dad (who should be happy there’s interest and more conversation) starts trying to shove off everything house says like “He never sleeps of course he’s tired” and “His left twitched I don’t see what the [big deal is (probably)].” And “So?” It did set House up to say all those really cool things so I guess that was the point but it still was usually unnatural

I didn't saw the full episode. But it feels normal, parents (and i will said people in general) want the doctor to focus in what they think is the important. I understand both part, the doctor has studies and experience, but todays days people paid hundreds of dollars for a 5 mins consultation and the answer is inconclusive

I have myoclonic jerks, they feel wierd kinda like falling and having someone turn you off and on again really fast. Sometimes they force me to make strange involuntary noises too. Imagine lagging in a video game but real and uncomfortable. They usually occur when im tired but if i actively consentrate and avoid having my eyes closed for too long i can fight them
