Nice discussion. I've been a bit obsessed with Edith Wharton lately but I have not read this story yet. I'm very curious what Wharton was experiencing in her personal life that might have led her to write to this kind of story...

This sounds like it was written about my dad and stepmom 😂 He’s got dementia and is in the no short term memory phase, plus being 84 and can’t take care of all the things he used to, my stepmom is not dealing well with not being the one taken care OF and instead being the caregiver…and some folks just don’t aren’t cut out for that type of role. Or at least that’s me applying my current situation to the short story 😂
