The first game, cause it's the only game you can play as Donkey Dong. Kiddie Kong is poopoo. Nah the real reason is simply because I have lots of nostalgia for the first game. I used to go to a friend's house after school sometimes and we'd play her SNES. She was a good friend and would later become my first girlfriend and well, she was awesome and I think she was the prototype for the modern Egirl. She gave me her copy of Ninja Garden on NES and was just an all round good friend.

To answer your bafflement about not being able to swap characters (in a semi-serious and simplified fashion) that decision is made by top executives who delegate to lower level executives who get their information from accountants who get their information from analysts who get their information from focus groups who are generally made up of non-gamers and/or the dumbest people who ever lived. Add in a little consulting and there you have it: a terrible decision (and sometimes a terrible game). If you’re ever wondering why something stupid is happening in the world there’s a good chance bureaucracy is involved. (And my favorite Donkey Kong game wasn’t on the list. Donkey Kong 64, my man. Not technically a Donkey Kong Country game but I didn’t have a SNES growing up. I just had my dad’s old NES which I played for years and by the time I was done with it the N64 was out and that was that.

@@Gatorade69 the hilarious part is that DK actually controls worse, is slower, and has less movement options than Kiddy Kong. (kiddy can bounce on water and is the fastest in all three games if you know how to utilize extendo rolls like DK) Yet I love DK more than KK 7 days a week.

There's one (and only one) advantage of using Diddy over Dixie in Tropical Freeze for me: Diddy drops you from the glide upon letting go of the button a lot faster than Dixie does, which is admittedly incredibly situational, but I found it incredibly useful against the bosses, Lord Fredrik in particular.

I'm sad that not many people really realize that Cranky is the best partner in tropical freeze. He lets you play with a sort of speed and flow state It feels like playing as Sonic the Hedgehog in a Yoshi's Island game.
@DaNintendude
@DaNintendude 10 ай бұрын
Yeah Cranky is by far my most used Kong partner. Dixie has the most air control, but she slows you down a lot and can actually hinder you in certain circumstances. Diddy is definitely the worst of the 3, but he has specific use cases that actually made me start using him far more than Dixie.
@bobafett4265
@bobafett4265 10 ай бұрын
Yeah Cranky is basically built for Speedrunners basically, which isn't a bad thing, plus for how Cranky is as a character for his team up abilities being a bit of a learning curve, it's a good fit for the old geezer that goes on about how games used to be harder and you had to learn how to play the game and get better at it.

@DaNintendude

@jclkaytwo7789 Mostly just bosses like Lord Fredrik, the temple levels. When you stop Diddy's hover, you drop immediately. Dixie's hover will always add height (or stall), no matter when you let go. Diddy's drop makes it better as a crutch for quick movement, and is the most controllable when landing
@jclkaytwo
@jclkaytwo 10 ай бұрын
@@DaNintendude I don't think the difference between diddy's drop and dixie's brief stall when you let go of the button makes too much of a difference in any circumstance the game throws at you. this ain't celeste. I also think dixie's hover is better as a crutch; it gives you more of an opportunity to correct mistakes and even skip over platforms.

People liked how fast Diddy and Dixie were in 2 and that it was an unofficial test for Diddy to prove himself as a hero in his own right rather than just be second banana to Donkey Kong. The dirty, pirate aesthetic with an emphasis on the Kremlings this time around made the adventure feel much bigger and more important than DKC1, which was pretty low-stakes because K. Rool just took the Banana Hoard rather than kidnap someone directly. I don't think it's a coincidence that the games with both a light and heavy character are considered fine by the fandom and the game with the two lightweight characters is critically acclaimed.

I don't think there's a 2D platformer that's able to capture the pure atmosphere that the DKC games have. The pre-rendered graphics, for the most part, hold up to this day, the platforming feels so organic to the world, and the soundtracks made by David Wise hits this amazing balance of catchy video game melodies and atmospheric/ambient structure.

I think for me the difference between Rare and Retro with DKC is that of True Journey vs. Fun Adventure. The SNES games especially in hindsight emphasize the nature of the settings and progress by way of aesthetics. The world maps became increasingly detailed and tied into the individual levels as the series went on. Krem Quay could just have a basic layout for its swamps and one bramble level, but takes the time to have a thorny vine section on the map proper to illustrate where you go next. The sprite design itself is indicative of being a genuine experience, with a sense of authenticity the Kongs and their foes that most platformers don't have, further inviting players to experience the game as real place. Even the music of the respective world maps immediately signals the tones of the trilogy's games: fun romp, avoiding dangers in enemy territory, and exploring a mysterious setting. Even the more gimmicky experiments in DKC3 feel rooted in matching the environments rather than creating ones in a vacuum and sticking them in a stage. Retro goes more for being a rollercoaster of sorts. That's not to suggest there isn't diversity in aesthetics or a few different emotional tones to its levels, but so many of them have a sense of being beautiful backdrops for the exciting set pieces you'll engage in. There is some narrative being told by progress (see the Bright Savannah for an example), yet the world maps are more simplistic even with the music, acting as a means to move the Kongs from one world to the next and no story to tell. A lot of the stages while great to look at and have the best platformer level designs ever (while never featuring mere floating platforms) yet the cartoony nature of Returns and Tropical Freeze means ones from those two always feel a bit more video gamey than the SNES games' efforts. It does however allow the gimmicky levels to be made for fun rather than having to exactly match what the setting would initially suggest. I'd probably liken it a bit to Mario Galaxy 1 vs. Mario Galaxy 2 in some ways. Rare often made for the better experience while Retro often had better design.
@jclkaytwo
@jclkaytwo 10 ай бұрын
I don't think comparing the rare DKC games to galaxy 1 and the retro DKC games to galaxy 2 is fair at all. galaxy 2 may have had better level design, but it seeped away everything that made galaxy 1 unique and essentially turned it into every other mario game. a soulless shell of its former self. chalking up the retro DKC games as simply "fun adventures" as opposed to "true journeys" is so reductive of what those games achieve. the retro DKC games didn't lose a single bit of the rare games' soul, they just added new things in its place. tropical freeze in particular has fantastic worldbuilding and environmental design, and feels just as rooted as the original games despite its crazier set pieces. tropical freeze's world 6, for example, is incredible because each level is based on an individual world in DKCR, but frozen over. it does an great job at showing how much DK island has been impacted, and helps make the game feel like a huge journey.

As someone who has always adored the classic DKC trilogy (admittedly I never cared much for Returns but Tropical Freeze is good), I love to see that there's still folks out there playing through this series for the first time. Its fine that you're not super into them, I've been seeing that take more and more lately, but I appreciate that you tried them out and still enjoyed your time with them even if they felt clunky to you. Its kinda crazy cuz I've always thought the games are some of the smoothest feeling platformers out there, nice to get a different perspective on that. Its funny how you like Returns so much but I always thought it felt really mid, even if I do still respect it as the grand return to the DKC series that it was. DKC3 is my personal favorite and I'm very glad to see that its bad reputation has been shifting lately, its a good game but it gets a lot of flak just because its different...and because Kiddy Kong exists. Don't even get me started on the amount of people that hate the music literally just because it wasn't composed by David Wise, lol. Your appreciation for the DKC3 boss design was a pleasant surprise and I felt so validated hearing you say you preferred most of DKC3's levels over DKC2 lmao

Interesting to see how little you used the Kong's rolling abilities in the SNES DKC games and then called those games slow. You didn't even mention one of the best platformer mechanics those games practically invented: jumping out of the roll in midair. I'm glad you covered the Land games as well. While the handheld DKC games are ports, DKC GBC version adds a new level not found in SNES and GBA version while DKC3 GBA gets a WHOLE NEW WORLD with 6 new levels and a new boss. The same thing happened with DKC Returns on 3DS: there are EIGHT NEW LEVELS. The 3DS versions extra content is part of the reason why Tropical Freeze's new Funky mode is so meme worthy but not actual money worthy.

So in Tropical Freeze, Diddy does have a few small niches that are superior to Dixie. The big one is that his jet-thrust is noticeably faster in water than her hair-propeller. Less major but still there is that Diddy’s hover carries momentum far better than Dixie, and as such he is a superior choice for speed running in a very small number of levels, though admittedly Cranky usually takes the top spot for speedrunning because he carries momentum even better than Diddy.

I might be the odd one out but funnily enough, the more straight forward nature of DKC1 is exactly why i prefer it to 2 and 3 despite still liking those as well. I also think the difficulty pacing from level to level is handled much better in 1. when i first played 2, i felt like it got way too diffiucult way too fast, and i felt like 3 was way too easy for way too long which again, i know im probably alone in thinking. As someone who grew up with the SNES DKC trilogy, they`re some of my all time favorite games (rivaling Super Mario 3 16bit and world in terms of how much I played and enjoyed these games) , and I`m somewhat disappointed that you didn`t enjoy them that much, but I understand why that would be the case, as I have similar issues with most 16bit games I didn`t grow up with, and played in more recent years As far as which one is best or worst, I know that DKC2 is the fan favourite, and I don`t disagree about it being the best in the series, but I actually find myself going back to it just that little bit less often than the other ones, in part because of it`s difficulty (It`s easily the most difficult of the 3), but I think that the brighter and more colorful anesthetics of 1 and 3 help make them more enjoyable to just go through casually... I also don`t think that 3 is given a fair chance, because IMO it`s just as good as the first 2 games, and really charming in it`s own way I terms of the DKC returns games, they are fine platformers, and really well made, but they never clicked with me as a fan of the classics, and I think the way the 2nd character is treated is alteast part of the reason why, and another part being the lack of K Rool and his goons (which in my mind is almost as big as part as the DKC identity as DK himself). The result of this is that despite having beaten DKCR on 3DS (and having admitedly enjoyed it much more than the Wii version, despite the 30 fps cap on 3DS), I`ve only gotten part way through tropical freeze before getting destracted by other games, and haven`t really had the desire to go back to it since

Stronghold Showdown where the Snes version didn't have a boss has Kerozene ine GBA version with completely new assets. Donkey Kong Country 3 Crocopus Replaces Barbos in Razor Ridge. Barbos got moved to the new world added in the GBA remake of Donkey Kong Country 3. Donkey Kong Land 2 is a retlling of Donkey Kong Country 2, while Donkey Kong Land 3's plot is actually different. I can’t exactly fault you for your opinions on the SNES DKC games. I like them a lot, but unsurprisingly, the modern games manage to be better thanks to better technology and design philosophy and all that. I got DKC Returns back in the day because I had enjoyed New Super Mario Bros Wii and seeing they did the same for Donkey Kong Country, which I had a passing familiarity with, I was excited. I did not like the game on my first run because, quite frankly, I was bad at it and it was too hard for me. That being said, I gave it a second chance later on and it was a real 180 on my opinion- I liked it quite a bit now. And then Tropical Freeze came out and it just blew me away. It’s still my favorite 2D platformer to this day. It has so many great ideas, beautiful and vibrant backdrops, and a stellar soundtrack. And I entirely agree- nothing Mario has ever done in 2D has topped Tropical Freeze in my eyes. The game closest to doing that was, funny enough, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, which was done by ex-Rare. And hot damn, I’m still dying over here waiting for a new Donkey Kong Country. It’s been a decade and DK deserves more respect than Nintendo has ever given him.

I've found that when replaying Tropical Freeze on the Switch, Dixie was actually my least used Kong. Cranky was my most used by far, and Diddy was 2nd. Dixie is objectively better than Diddy in a general sense, but I've found that there are a handful of situations in which Diddy's control is much more suitable. The extra height that Dixie gains is usually why she's better than Diddy, but it can be a detriment in certain levels. Diddy's hover slows you down less and is very consistent. I will often use Diddy in the temple levels, because precision is key. Dixie's gained height can push me into enemies and hazards above me, and it makes it harder to land where I want to when I'm moving quickly. This also makes Diddy better for bosses like Lord Fredrik, in which he's significantly better than the other Kongs. Each of the 3 kong partners have different uses. Dixie is the most versatile, but Diddy is incredibly useful if you know when to use him over Dixie. Cranky is really useful in a handful of levels, and not really useful at all in others. I end up playing as him the most because he's fun and I love his flow of movement.

Completely random thought, but if DKC 3 wanted to have a power character, maybe the should have picked up enemies when they rolled through them and be able to throw them. Give them something unique compared to the speed character that doesn't just make them worse in everyway except like the two times you have to skip off water to reach a bonus.

On the SNES dkc games: I think part of the appeal was (aside from the graphics looking WILDLY advanced back in the day) playing them enough to get really good at them. I just.. noticed you said they were clunky, and the first few playthroughs feel like that for sure! But being a little kid and playing obsessively for the sake of speed, dkc2 and 3 especially can be charged through super, super fast. So yah, it's hard to tout the fun in that when there are objectively way better and faster games to run through nowadays, but man was it sure fun at the time XD

Personally, I think people that don't like DKC 3 are too busy sniffing glue while Stickerbrush Symphony plays in the background. It's just nostalgia. There's no mechanical difference on how DKC2 and 3 plays, apart from some extra mechanics like the water bounce. And the soundtrack isn't bad, it just wasn't composed by the guy that made your favorite glue sniffing music. 24:40 The reason you don't have any Kremilings in subsequent games is because they're Rareware creations, same with all the stuff from DKC2 onward. Considering where Rare was, retro Studos probably wasn't interested in going after a licensing deal with Microsoft.

As a player of the DKC games from start to finish, I do praise retro's work and ethics. I find the lack of personality in enemies to be a real... while not bad, incredibly jarring experience and put me off for a long while. I never liked drastic changes in things I like and that was a not insignificant change. The music was different but rang true with just enough nostalgia to feel DKC but unique and agreed with the technology of today, the controls in the DKC:R games were tight and responsive but I missed the weighty feel of the original controls caused by input lag as well and as you said, not being able to control Diddy outside of co-op was... a choice.
