Thanks for the review Jay! Recently I jumped from some $10 cheapy Amazon keyboard to a ROG claymore and now have one of Massdrop's other keyboards, the Tokyo60. The jump in feel from the basic keyboard to the Claymore was as wide as it was from the Claymore to the Tokyo60. I think what people need to realize is that keyboards like this are akin to doing a custom loop. The vast majority of people would be fine with a Hyper 212 Evo, but stuff like this gives you meticulous control over the look feel and sound of your experience. If you so wanted, you could completely disassemble the switches in the keyboard and rebuild them with different springs and stems to change how they feel to type on or in more complex DIY mech keyboards, reconfigure the layout entirely. It provides no "practical" advantage, but it's a means to express yourself in your build.

Frank Frank Frank, you forgot to mention that the other $200 have "real" specs to justify their price.. macro keys, volume control, palm rest, audio jacks, num pad, individual key ligthing.. etc etc... @@bickerin run of the mill "gaming" brand peripheral manufactures engineer their products to fail shortly after the warranty is up. I have seen it time and time again with mice and keyboards. Names like Razer and Logitech are the worst offenders. Their QC and build quality is questionable at best. $30 will buy you a keyboard. sure. It will not get you a precision cut aluminum base with hot swappable switches and caps, QMK support, and the quality control that goes into something like a CTRL, or a Ducky or a Topre. Prepare to have your stabilizers wobbling off your deck like theyve had one too many at the pub in just a few months. Prepare to have your keycaps shedding their coatings and paints and textures, if they even have any. Macro keys, volume control nobs, palm rests and audio jacks are just extras to break. All utilize some kind of proprietary software to function, and when an update goes awry, they just might stop working. The CTRL has individual key lighting. as well as base lighting, and you probably wont hear the tell tale LED coil whine of cheaper manufacturers poor quality picks either. As for Num pads... really? people still use those? bells and whistles are just that. Extras. Things to get in the way. Get a keyboard without a num pad, and youll figure out pretty quickly just how little you actually use it.

With the RGB resetting when it loses power, you can actually set the default to whatever you want (you can also fully customize the color of each LED individually) using the software you use to change the keybindings. So if you're going to be unplugging it a lot, you just set your defaults once that way and it'll remember.
@TwinTurboZach
@TwinTurboZach 3 жыл бұрын
I got the ALT, which has the same RGB settings. Interesting thing I found: the control for increasing the scrolling speed effect seemingly has no effective limit. In the scrolling effect that shows the entire spectrum of color - if you were to increase the scrolling effect extremely high - youll actually find you wont be able to make out individual colors, instead it will look like a flickering effect of white light and when you move your head back and forth you will see what I would describe as tracers of color, almost like a refraction (but obviously not a refraction). It looks absolutely ridiculous on a keyboard, but it was pretty cool.

Kailh switches (especially their box and royal switches) deserve a lot more recognition than Cherry since Cherry switches have a scratchy feel to them. Honestly the gaming keyboard market is so bland and boring and overpriced, we need more keyboards like these.

"No volatile RAM on this" makes no sense. Volatile is exactly what this keyboard is, it loses all settings when power is turned off. Also, keyboards don't have RAM, they have storage. Come on, Jay.
@Mythricia1988
@Mythricia1988 5 жыл бұрын
If you're going to be picky, at least make sure you're right. The keyboard most certainly has RAM, because it has a microcontroller, that by literal definition includes RAM (in addition to Flash or some other non-volatile memory type used to store the firmware). I'm sure Jay meant non-volatile RAM, or NVRAM, which is a pretty common misnomer used when referring to non-volatile storage... I say misnomer because these days basically nobody uses battery backed SRAM as nv storage, FRAM / NOR Flash / EEPROM is a lot more cost effective.

I mean, you can "assume" he said whatever makes sense, but he didn't. And he, being in the position he is in, shouldn't be mistakenly using "common misnomers" because (Volatile and Non-Volatile) are literal opposites. Sure, I'm being picky. But then again, a lot of people watch these videos and it would help them understand things if there was some sort of quality control.

First off, it might be a little too expensive for the average consumer, but if you're saying 'lol the k95 is better then this, the blackwidow is better then this,' then you're terribly misinformed. I payed $200 canadian for my Pok3r, a 60% keyboard which means no F keys, no arrow keys and all the other function keys, and no numpad. Does that make it worse? Definitely not, I actually prefer it a lot better then my old K95. It saves desk space, is a *SIGNIFICANTLY* better build quality, there's no bloatware software; all onboard, it's fully programmable, and all the missing functions keys can be accessed with the FN key. This MD TKL is not targeted towards gamers, it's about being the most top notch quality in every aspect, and it's MODULAR. This means if you don't want the keyswitches on a specific key or the whole keyboard, you can buy new ones and just pop them em, no resoldering required. Also, dollar per key means nothing unless you're a video editor or if you're a person that needs macros, so that's a completely useless measurement for a keyboard being 'overpriced.' So yeah, it's not overpriced but it's expensive, and the features and quality you receive from this keyboard are better than any gaming one on the market right now.

explain how Kailh switches are bad when 99% of r/mk says they feel smoother than cherry, explain how doubleshot PBT keycaps are bad when there is literally nothing as durable and nice feeling besides them, explain how rubber feet are garbage, and please explain how anodized aluminum is trash. Other than the no RBG profiles thing, it's better than any gaming keyboard (e.g corsair, razer, etc), not better then some other enthusiast keyboards but still up there. Edit: Also you can buy the keyboard without switches or keycaps LMAO

Plus one of the options is Halo switches which people are tripping over themselves to get when they have a chance. It's a good starter board with a conservative modern aesthetic and it's compatible with most aftermarket adjustments that people do while removing the bar of "learn to solder." My first high end mechanical keyboards was used I had to learn to desolder, solder, and figure out a bad trace I needed to jump and I almost gave up except that the thing was so expensive that I refused to.
@cuckpaul9145

@Plasmaboo I actually find a lot of complaints in here to be somewhat valid (regarding missing numpad, not strong enough feet magnets etc), but you are just so uninformed about keyboards that your entire comment is so stupid and wrong. You are literally only picking out the flaws that it has (which are actually somewhat minor) and blatantly disregarding its strengths in your evaluation. The aluminum case for this keyboard is easily worth 80 dollars atleast, probably closer to 100. Kailh switches have vastly improved over the past few years and in fact, the "Halo" switches were some of the most expensive second hand switches on the market at 80 cents a switch. The keycaps are FUCKING PBT DOUBLE-SHOT, which are far from being shit and are miles better than any standard crap from Razer or Corsair. They sell for atleast $25 second hand. All this and it comes with a PCB that allows for hot-swapping switches, and RGB. I agree that this keyboard is pricey, but it is not a piece of garbage.
