Tim, you are the best there is in demonstrating fly tying on the web. I teach a class in fly fishing at Shepherd University. Your videos are the ones I recommend. BTW, I love your version of the bead head Wooly Bugger.

I literally started tying flies a month ago. I started with the simple ones. This one is a killer and I might add it to my to-do list. Thank you sir!

This has got to be one of the most simplistic yet accurate insect imitations ever devised, amazing. Putting a black tungsten bead in front would probably make it work even better

Been using this pattern in various colors for bass and panfish with great results. Pure white with large eyes is fantastic as a minnow Imation and a very effective for spring time crappies. Thanks Tim! Keep 'em coming!

For anyone who is curious, the "Mop" material is called microfiber chenille, and is more affordable and common on bathmats and special car-washing rags than it is on actual mops, which can be pricey. It's available all over amazon if you just search "microfiber chenille."

Just learned about these babies. I read a lot of hate on them though and no one seems to give a good answer on why lol...awesome tip for the dubbing noodle. I'm going to use that on other flies too.

Just tied some of these today (only a tan color) and WOW; caught at least a dozen trout on it. Even after getting roughed up with much of the dubbing torn away and the mop strand barely hanging off the hook it still caught fish. I used split shot to get it down as even in slow water it seems to not sink very well. This might replace the Pat's rubber legs as my go-to nymph.

Yep and never admit how they got in your fly box too! I love this sort of stuff, the most expensive part of the whole fly is the hook!

Awesome find Tim! That's the best "mop" I've seen. Already comes tapered huh. You should call it "The Tweed" for some sophistication ;-) I'll be looking for some today! Have you seen the latest American Angler and Scott Sanchez's article? "Put a ring on it" for easier articulated flies. Thanks Tim! 👍

As usual, very nice tie and video Tim. I have a mitt of the gray but it is not mottled. Can I use a dark gray sharpie to "mottle" the finger? Maybe rub it with my thumb so it spreads out and doesn't appear as a dot? BTW: Have you ever considered attend the Fly Tying Expo in Idaho Falls, ID held in mid-April. Would love to watch you tie sometime.

Sacrilege! Blasphemy! Outrage! This is an affront to everything good about fly tying. Just kidding. Excellent simple fly. I might try adding a bit of weight to the shank.

Once, a few fly fishermen were looking down on me for using a mop fly, I asked them how much of their tungsten beads, vinyl D ribs, chenille and rubber legs are found naturally in nature? 🤣

Tim, do you find that this fishes better with the curved scud hook? I've always used a standard wet fly hook. Regards from the UK.

This might be a dumb question but what is the tool you use at the very end to cut off the thread. I have seen it on your other videos and cannot seem to find anything like it, would appreciate the name of it. Thanks!
@hankvana2149
@hankvana2149 2 жыл бұрын
It's part of the whip-finishing tool. The wire shaft of the whip-finisher is swaged (flattened) to stop the bead & tube handle from falling off. Tim has sharpened it to a chisel shape to cut the thread. I filed and polished (with needle file and 400 grit sandpaper) a small "V" notch in mine. It's just like a sewing "seam ripper". I think a sharpened notch is safer than a chisel end and is easier to align on the thread.

Having trouble with the dubbing escaping the split thread while wrapping the final portion of the fly. I spin the thread so that it twists up the dubbing but portions of it keeps coming out. do I simply need to twist the thread more?
@tightlinevideo
@tightlinevideo 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, and it helps to bring the nozzle of your bobbin up nice and close to the lowest bit of dubbing and giving it yet another good clockwise spin.

Still a little unclear on where you get the material for the Mop Flies. I'd appreciate some clarification.
@tightlinevideo
@tightlinevideo 7 жыл бұрын
The material comes off of a wide range items from car washing mitts to bath mats. There even pot holders made out of them. Just keep an eye out in automotive parts stores, home goods stores and big box stores as well. Once you learn what they look like you'll start seeing them everywhere and in just about any color imaginable.

How do you find the most success when you fish this? tight line, indicator, swung?
@tightlinevideo
@tightlinevideo 7 жыл бұрын
I like to fish it trailed about 16" off of the back of a heavily weighted fly i.e. Get It Down Pat's. You of course could put the Mop above the anchor fly off of a dropper if you prefer. I don't like weighted Mop flies because I want them to be as close to neutrally buoyant as possible, just like real Crane Fly Larva. But, you do need to get them down near the bottom. Most of my nymphing now is done "tight line" with an inline fluorescent piece of indicator mono as part of a long leader.
