Although I personally prefer a more natural approach to flies and their presentation there are times when obnoxious attractors, such as my Jelly Mop, a blend of a Mop Fly and a Blob work best. Use an aggressive strip-pause retrieve or hang it beneath an indicator. It works!

Of all the mop flies I've seen, this one by far is the nicest one! And I'm sure the fish will agree! Great combination pattern! Thanks for all your innovative ideas! :))

Hi Jon, it's a great fly both suspended under an indicator and cast and stripped at pace. Cheers, Phil

You can also mix it with the "eggstacy material" used more here too now aswell instead of the fritz and even blend the eggstacy together halo style as a tail then use the fritz body

Hi Lyle, while I have chased shad on the fly on the Umpqua, I never tried a Wotsit. If you give it a try let me know how you do. Thanks, Phil

Very cool idea! Congrats! Yesterday I used a mop fly for the first time, in stillwater. A simple mop with a rabbit fur collar. Slowly stripped, it worked! How do you use this fly?

Hi Jose, glad to hear that you enjoyed my video and even better that you caught a fish using a Mop fly. I tend to fish my Wotsit's or Jelly MOP's using a strip-pause retrieve as you did or suspending it beneath an indicator static or letting the wind-induced current swing the fly downwind on a tight line. I hope this helps, best of the season. Phil

This fly is called the watsit mate, the reason I know is my mate tied it first 👍

Never heard of a Watsit before Billy. I was just messing around at my tying bench and thought of blending these materials together. Proof once again is seldom anything new in fly pattern design. :)

I think this model works in closed water fishing. Can you tell me if this fly works in a river or not? Thank you.

They might if tied large enough and stripped at a brisk pace. I use my Whotsits for trout. You could use a Jelly Fritz body coupled with a Dragon Tail for a similar looking fly. Thanks, Phil

In my opinion, the "MOP" material is no worse than vinyl D ribs, closed cell foam, thin skins, mylar piping, flashabou or tungsten beads... Just because it comes from a mop doesn't make it taboo! How many of us raided the Christmas tree decorations for scraps of tinsel and shiny stuff? LOL Long Live the MOP... LOL

Hi Randy, thanks for taking the time to comment. I know some fly fishers and tyers worry that MOP tails and the flies that incorporate them might signal the end of the world as we know it. I lean towards your comments there are a wide range of materials out there, many synthetic in nature, that make great tying materials. Cheers, Phil

No offence taken mate if you Google wotsit crisps you will see it !! My mate was washing the car one day with the hand mops and one fell off it !! He said that looks like a wotsit I'm going to tye that on a hook to see if it works ?? Boom the rest is history mate it's been around here in the UK for s number of years now, just like American and Canadian patterns are just starting to be used here mate 👍👍👍

No problem Billy, no offence taken at all. The MOP is a popular, although controversial in some circles, on rivers and streams here. Upon seeing the fly it only made sense to blend them into my Booby's and FAB's once I saw all the hot colors these mop fingers are now available in. Works good using Daphina Fritz too! I have amended the title out of respect to its original designer. Cheers, Phil
