A Knight’s Tale - Heath Ledger’s romantic comedy historical jousting movie - is an absolute classic. This analysis of A Knight’s Tale breaks down why this movie remains so beloved by a whole generation of fans. A story of friendship, found families, honour, and identity - A Knight’s Tale rocked us in 2001, and it still rocks us today.
🎞️ A KNIGHT’S TALE is a 2001 American medieval action comedy film written and directed by Brian Helgeland. The film stars Heath Ledger as William Thatcher, a peasant squire who poses as a knight and competes in tournaments, winning accolades and acquiring friendships with such historical figures as Geoffrey Chaucer (Paul Bettany). Its 14th-century story is intentionally anachronistic, with many modern pop culture references and a soundtrack featuring 1970s music. 🎞️

my dad was in this movie! in the bowie dance scene, he was the dancer in a lime shirt and orange trousers. he's told me that when filming the shot where they line up and walk towards the other line, he was facing ledger and smiled at him during the first take, so ledger smiled back. that take made it into the movie!

One very small thing to add to the long list of things to love is the character of Adhemar's herald. It is such a small role, but I love that they made the effort to make him more than just the bad guy's side-kick, and his effort to copy Chaucer's style is hilarious.

@@PentexProductions Well said! I rarely accuse critics of "not getting" a movie, or say that there's this clear divide between "critics" and "movie fans". I also certainly wouldn't want to ignore the 50 percent of critics who actually did enjoy A Knights Tale and gave it positive reviews. But looking at the reviews as a whole, yeah, I'd say A Knights Tale is one of those movies most critics didn't get and just didn't click with for one reason or another. (John Carpenter's The Thing would be at the top of my list of movies that critics really didn't get at the time). But if ever there was a great movie that was made for "movie lovers" and not "critics" it would be A Knights Tale.

The first time I got it I was home with the flu when I was 8 years old, my dad went to the videostore and rented me this VHS in a portuguese dubbed version, which by the way has one of the best localizing I have EVER seen in dubs. The movie immediatlly reeled me in with We Will Rock You at the start. Then I watched it, and I liked it. And then I watched it again, and I loved it. And then as I kept watching I kept finding new small things everytime. Then HBO got to put this in their programming every few days in Brazil, so having memorized the script and having very little use for subtitles I started learning english from it. Every few years I see it again, and it's always up there with Star Wars, Iron Man, Matrix and Jurassic Park as one of my favorite movies of all time. I love it every time. Also, the title in portuguese (because we also usually localize titles, too) translates to "Knightly Heart" or "a Knight's heart", which really makes this one of the few movies I actually use the localized title when I talk to my friends because it's really good.

Brilliant moment. I kind of wish they took out the bit where he claims Will is a descendant of an ancient line of nobles because it kind of undermines the entire theme of the movie (even though Edward probably said it as a ruse for the crowd to go along with it) but who are we to question it. He is beyond CON-TES-TATION after all.

The moment that completely wrecks me every time is when William appeals to Wat, "Wat, you and me? We are not runners." And Wat says, "Today, Will, we are." Alan Tudyk plays it so well, smirking as he relishes the thought of giving the entirety of the the king's entourage a proper fonging, then his loyalty to William and the repercussions of that hit him. And Ledger's reaction to his fighting friend telling him to flee...

Totally agree. The sincerity was a really big part of early 2000s movies that has mostly vanished since then while everyone tried to copy the MCU style of quippy, self aware humour. Thankfully it looks like the sincerity is slowly coming back to blockbusters (Top Gun Avatar, Batman, Barbie, etc)

Omg, you almost made me cry with nostalgia with this break down. A Knights Tale was one of the few romantic comedies that very much influenced my love of cinema but also shaped how I viewed love and friendship. This is my favorite comedy movie to this day. I had forgotten how good this movie was especially compared to movies now., The dance scene to David Bowie's Golden Years is one of my favorite dance scenes in a movie and introduced me to David Bowie, making Golden Years one of my favorite songs. The female characters are so well written and were actually relatable as a girl who was and still is as tomboy, especially compared to how women were portrayed in other movies' set in this time place or in this genre. And comparing the women in A Knight's Tale to the super Girl Boss characters we get in period pieces now, the difference and downgrade in writing is apparent. Thank you for your time, passion, and work for this video. It hit my heart and my mind in a meaningful way, that I won't forget.

I couldn't agree more. Both women are allowed to express their feminine qualities in their own ways, but still showed they were unique and self defining their roles in society. They're such better representation of "strong female characters" than what newer movies all seem to do. They and Elle Woods are the best I found growing up.

I can quote almost the whole thing and do so on the regular, even when no one notices. Heck, I even took my username from this film!!!

I completely agree with everything you're saying in this video. A knights tale is one of my guilty pleasures. But you left out the scene in the end, where William is saying his iconic line: I will not run -I am a knight. Always brings me to tears! you earned yourself a sub. great content!

It mirrors the scene where he refuses to withdraw once the mystery knight is revealed to be Prince Edward. He says "It isn't in me to withdraw" - if he flees when discovered, he would prove those words to be a boast.

Apparently Helgeland drafted a sequel that would be about Will's daughter pretending to be a man to compete (like how Will pretends to be a noble) but it wasn't picked up. For what it's worth, I think it's all the more special for being a standalone story.

Lovely video and yes, adore the film as well. I don't know if anyone else has commented this already, but I love the detail of the constellation at the end of the film being Orion the hunter, considering that "hunter" is the nickname Jocelyn gives Will soon after they meet for the first time.

When I was a pre-teen, my older cousin stayed at my family's house a lot because of bad stuff going down at the time. He would show us movies he was into, which were primarily very bad comedy movies (in retrospect, they were very educational for me in many ways). But one of them, bless him for this, was "A Knight's Tale", and I've been in love with this movie ever since. It's one I quote all the time; somewhere, I still have the script book! Every time I bring up to people that this is a gen-u-ine classic they've never heard of, (in my imagination, the spiritual successor of "Aladdin", which is no small achievement for me), I've never been able to properly explain why. Now, here is your video, and, like Chaucer, you've said everything I've wanted to and so much better than I could've. So, my cheers and thanks to you!

So fun fact. This was one of my favorite films when it came out. At the time no one knew the film other than me in my group. Son is born in 03 and somehow I ended up with 3 dvd's of this movie, no clue how I just did. Well my then new born son loved the intro title to the dvd (I can still hear it on repeat). Our dvd wouldn't turn off so it just repeat the title music and scene over and over and over. But my son would have a tough time sleeping with out. He also loved holding onto the dvd box, by the time he was 2, my daughter was about to be born and I swear I watched and heard that title dvd intro the entire 2yrs. Anyhow we were struggling a name for my daughter and boom as me and the mother were talking about names, Jocelyn name came up on the movie. And that was that. So my daughter got her name from this movie. And 22yrs later, I still can hear that dang title scene music and image, and somewhere in storage I have 5 dvd's of this movie. A later gf had two herself and she has no clue why, when she moved out she left em. So, yup I have 5 dvd's and I don't even remember buying the first one.

What might be fun is a comparative essay between _A Knight's Tale_ and _Stardust._ They're both historical/fantasy romantic comedies that don't take themselves too serious but are still sincere, and focus on the hero's journey of the male protagonist without removing the agency of the female characters. More than that, they both came out only 6 years apart, had similar budgets, did about as well at the box office and kept growing afterwards You could even describe them as "Romcoms for the lads," which is not something that romcoms often do.

I think this movie worked so we’ll because they made it relate to people of today. Using we will rock you will hype up anyone and the “equivalent” back then wouldn’t really do anything as exhilarating as queen rocking in a crowd of medieval peasants trying to have their own good time. We can relate to that and it makes sense to us. People dancing to Bowie and loving life relates to us again where they were trying to show what it would be like for them at the time with the relevant music at the time but it can’t put a smile on our face the same way. Also just the ways the gang is about each other is how we are with of our friends and it makes sense to us rather than all of the more topical and time accurate language they could have used but it just doesn’t seem to make as much sense to us. I love this movie soo dearly and can’t wait to continue singing it’s praises to everyone who’s willing listen
