The whole awkward silence after the first intro was actually unscripted. Most of those peasants were actually homeless Czech citizens who didn't speak english and didn't know they were supposed to cheer after Chaucer was done talking, but Roland cued them in and it looked so damn honest they left it in.

I just found out that this movie was recorded in Czech Republic, and in the first introduction of Sir Ulrich nobody understand what was Paul Bettany talking about (because most people in background were from czechia), thats why they didnt knew when to react.... You can even see in 0:15 those two women in background little bit confused, when they were raising hands up but stopped xD ...... And the director of movie kept this scene anyway, because its really funny xD
