skekMal the hunter seemed to be the healthiest of the Skeksis, and he was far away from the Castle of The Crystal. Maybe the ceremony of the suns wasn't helping the Skeksis.

@@BrianLyons315 No, something much greater. The Skeksis inherited the urSkek's know how, but the urRu inherited their power, something which they never put to use, until urSol breaks with tradition in "Power of the Dark Crystal". I won't spoil it.

My fave would have to be the Archer cause his tale ends so sadly. He wanted to be rejoined with his counterpart and to become one again. Yet in the end he bravely sacrificed himself to stop all of the evil his other self was doing. Makes you wonder why the others didn't do the same to stop theirs from wounding and further damaging Thra. Or heck! Use that as leverage! They send an envoy saying "Hey! Stop killing Gelflings and ravaging Thra are else we're gonna end your reign of terror the only way we know how...by taking you down with us, literally"

That's a very interesting consideration. However taken to further consideration, the one flaw mainly with the Uru is the fact that they are more or less full-blown pacifists. Technically remember that the skeksis and the uru are not good and evil, per se. They are kind of more like a representation of Id (Self Preserving, Short Term Pleasure, Fear, Emotion, Reptile Brained, Energy/Action) and SuperEgo (Avoidance, Restraint, Patience, Civilization/Laws, Communal Identity, Empathy, Guilt, Diplomatics, Sacrifice, Restraint/Inaction.) With arguably the original forms of the Urskek being Ego, the objective pragmatic balance in-between the two, the one who decides when to act/take care of the Self and when to wait/take care of Others first. You need both these aspects in a harmonious healthy balance in order to be a functional person and in order to be a functional long lasting culture.

What I find ironic is that one skeksis, skekHak, killed his own urru counterpart, urHom, by throwing him down the crystal shaft, thus unknowingly killing himself. At least he suffered the consequences of his actions.

The mystics are so much more interesting than the Skeksis. I want to know much more about them. Peaceful ways are deeper and yet less emphasized and honored. The teller of our modern tales need to make the peaceful as sexy as the chaotic and stupidly warlike.

urVa definitively best UrRu, because he went like a true mad lad. A bit of a correction on urSan, as far as I been told, by those that read the book (Tides of the Dark Crystal) there is no indication the Swimmer was female. Many (Included myself) implied urSan to be female because skekSa the Mariner identified as such, although it is important to note, the UrSkeks were neither male nor female. Jim Henson wanted to keep it like that as during the production of the film he realized there were many male characters but only two females (Kira and Aughra), so when designing the Ornamentalist, he decided to make skekEkt effeminate, without implying specific gender, keeping the creatures mysterious, specially when it came to their true identity, as the UrSkeks were alien to Thra. Although, I would not oppose urSan been one, it would make it interesting if we get Season 2 of TDC AoR. A personal belief of mine is since the UrSkeks species evolve into a higher level of existence by studying the Crystal of their home world, overtime, they lost these mortal mundane traits, since they all became immortal and therefor had no reason to reproduce, in the process losing their Genders. Since the Skeksis and Mystics are crude split Physical Manifestations of the UrSkeks selves, what ever left of that biology, may had been re-instated (for the lack of a better word) into the crude forms. Also: the UrSkeks split was BEFORE the Crystal was cracked. Both the film and Dark Crystal Creation Myths volume 2 show this.

Wouldn't that also imply that skekSa is dead as well, because her counterpart is no longer alive? That's what happened with urVa in Age of Resistance, although I can imagine that the connection is a bit different there because, well, reasons that would be a major spoiler here.

@@Stoney3K well, as of now they are both alive. We still need to see Ung, Na, Shod, Li and Sa. And by what I read on the Dark Crystal wiki on the info from the novels Sa & San are another pair that seem to be living together (though theirs is not for reunification like Grah & Goh). Both act as leader to the Sifa (someone correct me if I misunderstood this) but if we get S2 it will be with parts of Tides of the Dark Crystal as part of the seasons plot as they will be a 3rd pair of importance to the plot after Mal/Va & Grah/Goh.

I thought that Skeksis had only two arms and no tails, unlike the Mystics, but the Hunter is much more physically active than the other Skeksis, so his extra arms and tail haven't withered away to almost nothing. You can even see the Emperor holding his scepter with a scrawny, minuscule arm, handing it to his dominant arm before unleashing the Darkening upon the Gelfling. The Mystics hunch over while the Skeksis stand tall, but biologically speaking, any anatomy that doesn't match between the two is so small, it really wouldn't be worth it to attack. That would be like saying that the barber attacked you by cutting off the body parts attached to the top of your head.

So do I. Especially since his Skeksis counterpart, SkekTek the Scientist always regretted ending his relationship with Aughra. Because SkekTek and UrTih died, that meaningful relationship was unfortunately truly no more, along with returning to their true form as an UrSkeks.

He also most rebellious of the Mystics. UrSol never left the valley possible during the death of UrMa and guilted with the Chamberlain's actions. He only stay in the valley to respect UrSu wishes during the movie version. I won't spoil what happened in the book sequels. Know this, Chamberlain is terrified upon seeing Chanter standing against him.

Fun fact about the urRu, they were originally based off of trolls that were designed by the Frouds. Jim Henson wanted a race that resembled Froud’s trolls, so they just gave them 4 arms and they now are the mystics we see them today.

urGoh and urVa are without a doubt my favourites, the Wanderer in particular. The reason why is probably the way they differed from the other Mystics, along with just how they actively tried to save Thra and chose to walk their own paths (urGoh deciding to risk it all by telling the Skeksis and Urru about the prophecy and his close bond with skekGra; urVa deciding to not live alongside the other Mystics and making a great sacrifice to save his friend Aughra).

5:15 “Blanket-Coats” The tale of the Skeksis and urRu is obviously about growing old, the mystics who embrace it and the Skeksis who fear it, I say this because blanket coats sounds like exactly like what an old person would wear

0:29 to 0:46 It’s interesting that SkekOk was the smallest Skeksis, but UrAc was just as big as the other UrRu, if not larger. It makes me wonder if he was more good than evil in his UrSkeks form. 0:51 to 1:09 Other than the Gourmand, all the other Skeksis are very skinny and withering, while all the UrRu appear well fed and look taller than the Skeksis when they stand up right. 1:14 to 1:33 It’s interesting and a little ironic the UrAmaj and UrNol worked together, given that UrAmaj was one of two in arguably the most similar pair, while UrNol is one of two in the most opposite pair. As mentioned in other videos, UrAmaj and SkekAyuk are very similar since they are both cooks, while UrNol and SkekNa could not be more opposite, since “an herb tender and a Slave master have absolutely nothing to do with each other.” I cannot be the only one to see a little irony in that. I love all of the UrRu, whether they’re well known or not. It’s too bad they don’t get as much screen time as the Skeksis, especially on the show. But regardless, I want to see more Dark Crystal on screen.

Strictly speaking, they are all hermaphroditic, like a slug, but only their original complete forms were capable of breeding. Some were so evenly both across their good and bad elements that both counterparts after the division remained sexually ambiguous, but in SOME, one became distinctly more female and the other male. The General, without a doubt, has always been the most masculine of the Skeksis, and his Uru the most Feminine of her kind. Of course the reverse is true in at least one other pair. For one, their masculine side was more toxic, the other, their feminine side was worse.

A fun fact about the mystics when they were being designed, Jim Henson came up with their appearance by the inspiration of Froud’s trolls. Jim Henson wanted to include the troll design and then Froud decided to change them to avoid copyright claim. The only change they made is giving them four arms. I thought this was interesting because most people see trolls as either massive, ugly hulks with tusks, but Froud included their design as something peaceful and gentle.

I really love the Mystics in the Dark Crystal world, they are a lot more interesting than the Skeksis, we saw a few in AOR but not the whole clan. My favorite urRu is now urVa the Archer even though he sacrificed himself to kill the hunter and bring back Aughra He replaced urZah The Ritual Guardian, can’t wait for season 2.

My Favourite urRu is by far the archer. He was the most knowbal by sacrificing himself to get rid of the hunter!

I agree. Because by sacrificing himself, UrVa the Archer not only made SkekMal perish along with him, but he simultaneously saved the Gelfling resistance and brought Aughra back through SkekMal’s energy.

Am I the only one humbly prefering the Mystics from the movie ? Because of their deep veiled eyes, sorrow expressions and solemnity. The Mystics from the recent serie just look whimsical and "high" (like a mix of Falkor and Peter Jackson's Radagast), just too light, slow and goofy, more than deep, wise and patient. The enchantment broke on me. (fortunately, everything else in the serie was absolutely marvelous and bewitching!)

Yeah, unfortunately I have some bad news as I have been trying to find this through his other pages and through rips and song lookups with Shazam and other softwares - still unable to find it. I think I got the perfect role for skekyi and urya so listen to this!: Skekyi the astronomer: a female skeksis with a similar beak like skeksil and skekna, a skeksis that studies the planets and the stars and really enjoyed seeing when skeksis fight, she is a close friend to skeksil because she admire his voice a listen his advice and a close friend to skektek to help him with his experiment, she holds a rival grudge against skekzok: astronomy vs astrology Urya the star cartographer: a female urru with a similar snout like ursol who studies the stars and make her owns rituals, she is known to be the most gentle of the urru as she helps other races such as poddlings and grunaks ( before the skeksis wipe them out ) she is also a close friend to urgoh to which she understands the unity of skeksis and urru but after when urgoh was banished she felt bad for him. So what you think?, to which I think it's the perfect role for these two.

Ok so here is my question. In the original dark crystal movie the skeksis and mystics are so connected that if one of them dies their other half dies as well, but if the chamberlain is still alive despite his mystic half dying what does thay mean? Does it mean that if they arent close to the planet alignment than they arent as connected?

if you watch/listen to the movie carefully, at the end when the Mystics enter the crystal chamber you can hear the Scroll Keeper cry "urRu!" This is what they were always supposed to be called before the studio forced Hensen's hand and made him overdub the language into English. (The movie was originally wasn't supposed to be in English but rather in the languages of Thra. That's why the mouths of the characters don't always match the words being said. For example - "Trial by Stone!" was originally "Haskeeka!" You'll see that the Chamberlain's and the General's mouths match this better than "Trial by Stone!"

Archer is the best of them. He is the only urRu willing to protect Thra from the ravages of the Skeksis. When all the others allowed the Skeksis' many genocides, Archer sacrificed himself to save Augra. The urRu could have saved the Gelfling, the Gruenak and all the others killed off by Skeksis, but chose instead to value themselves and their reunification over Thra itself

Science is something you should definitely be careful with, and it has to be tempered with a good moral compass or else you might end up doing some "truly dark stuff."

Because the mystics could not at the time bare that they had counterparts who were that shameful. They left the castle and began their journey far away for a reason, it would take them a very long time to accept they were two halves of the same whole again. Its the part of the urSkek that was ashamed of their dark hearts of which the Skeksis represent. Its something they had to come terms with, that they despite how noble and wise they were were part of a creature or being once that was capable of which things hen they themsleves were so pure and wise. The wondered and his counterpart were both unique in that they knew thats something they had to face, with the Wanderer being the first to finally accept what they were.

In DC: Creation Myths volume 3, there are two urRu, urGoh and another unnamed one. I think it's implied that the latter is urMa, as he moderates the peace treaty between the Gelflings and the Makraks.

Can anyone tell me the background music to this video? It's beautiful and so peaceful. :) I love the Mystics. I think the urSkeks splitting into the Mystics and Skeksis is one of the most interesting things about The Dark Crystal. I also love how Age of Resistance fleshed out the Gelfling race, something the Gelflings really needed. LOL But back to the Mystics, I know the Skeksis tend to be more popular among fans, but as fun as the Skeksis are, it's always refreshing to see the Mystics. Not only would I feel safe with them, I love how gentle, kind, and peaceful they are. I could spend a whole day with them and listen to their wisdom. :) The only thing that might bug me about them is their, um...lack of speed. XD

Only when SkekNa temporary taking control of the Garthim army to find the remaining Gelflings. Plus, UrYm is seen crying while watching Gelflings be caught by Skeksis hands and UrSol encouraging him to help them. But, he refused to break the rules of UrSu's wishes. No matter it hurts him. UrSan, should showing her teaching a Drenchen Gelfling (voice by Annapantsu) to ward off Skeksis for a brief time by singing like a Mystic.
