My son sophomore year he's learning how to weld. I told him it's a good occupation get into and they teaching lot better ways what me and Grandpa show him.

Learn to weld with either hand. It makes it so much easier to weld the hard side with your left hand if right handed and vice versa . On the job there's gonna plenty of times you can't get to one side or the other with your right hand if right handed or your left if right handed. It's so much easier if you can weld with either one. Hopefully they're teaching that at this great school. That's how I had to learn as a young man. Walking the cup with either hand takes some practice but do much easier once you do. The instructors at this school seem like they're very good , top notch hands.

Staring at a weld with no shield! that's exactly why I switched to crane operating no shade hats off to welders. But there are way too many health risk I just didn't wanna have late in life I'm 42 now and this is the time when all those mistakes start to really catch up!

You'd be surprised to know that clear glasses actually protect your eyes from quite a lot of uv rays. Not as much as a welding helmet but even they don't protect your eyes from it 100%

​@@krisnick92same as riding in your vehicle. You don't get sun burned through the window. Clear safety glasses or dark will help you not get your eyes flash burned. Tig welding will burn them quick. Quicker than stick. I burned mine 1x when fitting and I didn't get them burned while fitting. I was turned toward some duct that was reflecting from my welders flash when he was welding and I was getting it from the reflection. Once was enough. I usually welded. But not that time. I made it to retirement still making x-ray welds. Cheater lens and bifocal safety glasses of course. No matter what or who you are your eye sight is going to fail somewhat sooner or later. For me at 47. It's just part of the trade.

Smoke is not an issue. There is so much smoke there that if was an issue, you would have to stop because your eyes, nose and throat would be burning.
