The dad is a complicated character. Not entirely bad, but also not entirely good. On the one hand he just wanted to see his daughter, but at the same time he also put her in danger and tried to take her against her will.
@0doublezero04 ай бұрын
Which is what made Batman TAS so great. All the antagonists had very intricate backstories that made you feel sorry for them (well some of them at least...).
@pokerface43964 ай бұрын
I feel like his love for his daughter was superficial. He didn't try to turn his life around and abandon crime, so his actions wouldn't hurt his family and ruin his daughter's life. He continued stealing the moment he found a convenient way of doing so and expected his ex-wife just to come back to him with the kid because they would never need anything (as if it was a problem in the first place). He never understood the harm he did -- at this point, taking away his child was a way to get back at his ex rather than an act of a desperate parent. The girl's mom was ready to start things anew in a different place for her safety (even though leaving Gotham is generally a sound decision for parents who want their child to grow up happy and non-traumatized), while he couldn't make a single sacrifice for his family, but still felt he was entitled to his daughter's love.

@@pokerface4396so basically, he found a way of providing for his family that's slightly less harmful to society than any given politician or banker and his wife went full Skylar White... Was Batman supposed to be a hero or a villain in this story?
@pokerface43964 ай бұрын
@@soujemn5 how is screwing people over supposed to be less harmful to society? Politicians and bankers weren't suffering from his theft, employees and workers were. Also, stealing isn't a long-term or stable source of income it's instant gratification for quick cash - and he wanted his family to rely on him, hoping he wouldn't get arrested and their money ends up getting confiscated since it wasn't earned legally? Is that called "providing for the family"? He was selfish: he chose the way that was the easiest for him without any care about him dragging his child into the crab bucket. The mom had plenty of reasons to be concerned - she didn't want her daughter's reputation to be stained before her life could even begin and she didn't want herself and her daughter to be caught in the inevitable crossfire. Families of criminals are often targeted or used as bargaining chips - especially in Gotham. She was the only one worried about the consequences, so she did what a good parent had to. How is "going full Skyler White" is supposed to be a bad thing?
@pokerface43964 ай бұрын
@@soujemn5 stealing isn't less harmful to society. Whenever theft occurs, it's employees who work at the place who are punished for the consequences. Also, it's certainly not a way to secure a stable income or a future for your kid. He literally wanted his ex and child to rely on his ability to steal without caring about the long-term consequences (he didn't even consider the side effects of wearing a suit, which means he would have ended up hurting his family yet again and leaving them even worse off). Meanwhile, the ex actually thought about the future - she didn't want her daughter to be forever associated with a thug or have their assets confiscated because of her husband's illegal activity. Moreover, families of criminals often become targeted by other criminals, either for revenge, as punishment, or bargaining chip. She just wanted a quiet, safe, and peaceful life for her daughter. And seriously, is Skyler White supposed to be a negative character?

Just because he wants to be in the kid’s life, doesn’t mean it’s good for her
@PainMonkey11 күн бұрын
I've seen quite a few custody battles, some pretty close to home. I think one of the reasons this episode works so well is the villain's motivations make a lot of sense. One parent wants to see their kid, one parent is horribly terrified that will happen. That's the kind of conflict you see every day in the real world.

Can we appreciate the mom in this? She told her daughter that her father is not safe to be around because if she didn't, Kimmy would have less of an understanding that her father is a bad guy if so thus making this a bigger mess than it already is and she probably would've grown up to hate both batman and her mom if she didn't let her daughter know.
@amyrosefan18839 күн бұрын
Agreed! I see some people here defending the dad but this creep has been on a watchlist of mine since I saw the episode. Considering the dad is a criminal and is violent and unstable , he also stalks his daughter from afar like a creep and tries to kidnap her in the end. Kimmy’s mom had EVERY right to keep her daughter away from him.
@dianeenvy41948 күн бұрын
@amyrosefan1883 They also are trying to say she should've listen to her daughter but kids typically do have imaginary friends and typically don't have a criminal father with an invisible suit so I think everyone should cut her some slack.

When I was a kid I thought he was pedophile and when I understood I found out it was her dad I still felt scared he was going to hurt her. Very scary episode but definitely something kids should see. This was the real representation I needed as a kid, I didn’t feel alone.

Batman literally adapted the Joel Schumacher film "Falling Down" in this one. How ironic considering what was later to come. For a 90s Saturday morning children's cartoon, I can't believe THIS got made. It had the balls to tackle disturbing topics like restraining orders, child custody and divorce in this kid's show! I'm astonished this wasn't a banned episode or didn't get attacked by conservative parents or family groups at the time.

@@atavious2491 For me as a kid it was 2 part episode early in the series called Feat Of Clay which runs from episode 4 to 5. There are a number of episodes that are darker than episode 17 See No Evil, although it covers a serious subject I would actually say it's one of the more tame episodes in terms of theme and end results for the 90's Batman series. You should rewatch it there are some really messed up endings and themes in the show.

I have seen every episode of the og Batman animated series (quit when the animation and continuity suddenly changed), and this was ALWAYS my favorite, since I was super little. The intro with the wind softly blowing at night, the creaking gate, the ragdoll’s face and that creepy/solemn music is burned into my memory. That scene with the animation style and music instantly takes me back to my childhood.

Such a creep honestly and he calls himself a father
@rokkudai4 ай бұрын
How is he a creep? He can't see his daughter because of whatever decision the courts decided so he found a way around it. From what the show was giving off, nothing he did was related to his daughter but the mother chose to alienate him from her. She says it herself when she said "I told her all about you. She knows you're not supposed to come near you". Same thing happened in the Antman movie with Scott Lang with his ex-wife trying to initially keep his daughter from him. I see a pattern.

@@rokkudai POV: You didn't actually watch the episode and just assumed the mom was just keeping her daughter away from him out of pettiness. If you'd actually watched the episode, it's shown the father is a criminal privvy to violence and a danger to his daughter. He even gets aggressive and forceful with her when he's trying to take her away while she's unattended to. The mother divorced him after finding out about his criminal activity to protect her kid. But I love how you types always assume it's the woman that's the problem. Even without the context you're completely biased.

True, but this goes beyond him wanting to spend time with her. He wants control over the situation and he wants everyone to KNOW he's in control. He feels entitled to be in Emily's life. He knows he's not a positive influence in her life, he knows he's a liability but he doesn't care. He's outraged that anyone would dare defy his will, in spite of objective practicality. He can't stand not having absolute control. Sneaking around as an imaginary friend means catering to his ex wife's will over his own. And he feels he shouldn't have to resort to that. (Sorry for the novel) TL;DR - Yes, he could do that, but he feels he shouldn't have to
