Fun With Turbos! Take some exhaust "els" and weld them together so that you form a tube that takes the air from the compressor wheel and leads it to the turbine. NOW, install a bung for a tube that can be connected to a propane tank with a valve. And a bung for a spark plug and it's electronic unit with D-cell batteries. Using a small pump, provide oil flow for the turbo center section bearings. Now, hook up the propane tank. Turn on the pump for the oil. Use a leaf blower into the intake of the compressor to get the turbo up to speed. When it is at max speed that your leaf blower can make, turn on the spark and slowly open the propane valve with the spark firing. You now own a turbojet engine, and you will hear it slowly increase in speed to the point where it will idle without the blower. If you increase the propane, you increase the speed of the rotating assembly to the point where it blows apart, I urge caution....

Its also possible the engine being turbo direct injection, had an LSPI(low speed preignition) event. LSPIs can knock on the order of 15+ megapascals that can break a piston crown or ring land in an instant. By the time you hear marbles in a can is already too late. After that it can just burn oil and run until it burns through the rest of the piston, which can take a while with vastly increased oil consumption. API SP oil was developed specifically to help reduce LPSI events.
@DavidD-qr2vn Жыл бұрын
Yep, when I saw the broken top land I figured LSPI. These LSPI events plague all TDI engines from all manufacturers and were a major investigation/development/investment area prior to the massive investments in electric drives.

He left the dealership shop where he had bought it and got on the freeway onramp which was right in front of the dealership and stomped on the gas. The engine went 'BOOM' in smoke and steam so bad that a piston came out of the block with so much force that it bent the motor mount. Ford then gave him a new engine. I think the positioning of the three chains, timing, oil pump, timing, makes sense. Not from an ease of maintenance point of view, but from a use of space one. When the offset between the two banks is two chain-width, yu space the two timing chains that far apart, and yu hav a gap on the crankshaft where yu can put a third chain.

I had pry the drive out of the asphalt with a large screwdriver. Board on the drive was destroyed but that old Maxtor drive otherwise didn't flinch. Once you showed all the oil in one turbo/exhaust port, but the engine hadn’t ventilated itself and there weren’t a ton of metal pieces around the engine, I was pretty sure it was going to be a broken piston ring land. Pretty common on DI turbo engines, especially in trucks because they cruise down the freeway at 10-15psi of boost at 2000rpm. Could be a lean cylinder, or it could have been getting a bunch of crankcase vent vapors.
@Mis73rRand0m Жыл бұрын
What about carbon on the valves causing incomplete sealing and hot spots? I bet there was preignition from a hot valve lip which did the initial damage and pulverized the crown, then it started burning through the exposed ring area and blowing oil.
@crazycoffee Жыл бұрын
I'm not very knowledgeable on these Ford's but could have it been a stuck injector or one that's spraying too much? From how the pistons looked the entire engine was lean.
@dm7254001 Жыл бұрын
@@Mis73rRand0m I think incomplete sealing of the valves would lower cyl pressure. Lower compression stops preignition. Hot spot on leaking exhaust could light the charge but should not hurt the piston without having full compression.

Given the side the piston failed on I'd say that was likely the cause of a faulty fuel injector. The newer version of this engine does not have the provisions for the tensioner for the oil pump so sadly we're stuck with the wet belt.

Regular maintenance wont have any impact on the carbon problem...on even the best maintained DI engine it's a simple matter of time and the EGR system dumping oil back into the top end where it always ends up on the intake valves. Like the videos you post! It was interesting to see a teardown of the engine I have in my truck. Hopefully, I won't have the issue this engine had but my guess is I probably won't. No mods or tunes in my truck.

Our company has a fleet of these. ALL do them have been in the shop for engine problems. It’s a constant.

given the context that this motor came out of an f150, with the clues of lean burn, overheating, and lack of an explosive failure. it seems pretty clear (to me) that this was possibly a towing failure the turbos were completely spooled (lean) for a long time (loaded, overheat) at a low rpm (no big boom) and it [melted] the motor as a result. am i correct? maybe not, but this motor doesnt look like it was abused like most of the other motors that you see. its the most likely scenario in my mind.

Our 2017 Ford Transit had the same type of twin turbo v6 engine. We put close to 260,000 miles on it before the engine started breaking down. We did an engine swap from a low mileage donor truck. The engine is complex in design, and there are a myriad of weak points that require attention, but I would consider them to be reliable.

I love seeing spark plugs they tell so much Normally I don’t see golden discoloration in the threads of the plug I do believe this to be since it is a twin turbo v6 that the higher compression and lack of running 91 octane caused the engine to run just a little bit hot and burned the plugs

That engine looks sturdy. It could be a Toyota or Honda engine from 2015. The chain guides looking good is a good sign. The plastic oil pans were a sore spot and the updated pan with a groove and seal instead of full RTV doesn't work because of oil pickup tube or some other item integrated in the pan that changed. I'm surprised one of the aftermarket companies hasn't stepped in with a gasketed pan.

I thought it was possible to do a pan swap with an earlier steel pan on some models. I know I'd prefer not to have a plastic oil pan

That is one very melted piston. I'm impressed.

Someone pulled a good engine to do a 7.3 godzilla swap and decided they liked your channel. Hats off to you.

The 1st gen 2.7s are known for misfires due to carbon buildup on intake valves. My girlfriend's sister's 15 had both heads replaced under warranty because she baby's it, and it never sees above 20% engine load.

What if the engineers had succeeded in keeping some engines port-injected? Would have succeeded in so many ways even much cleaner emissions through better fuel atomization

@@jamesmedina2062 well it's a good thing Ford listens sometimes. I believe all current F150 engines have PI as well as DI.

My 2016 F150 2.7 has 96k miles and run great. It still get 18 mpg mix driving and does not use any oil. I've never had the intake valves clean. Diesel engines have direct injection and no one ever talk about those valve building up carbon.

13:25 Pausing it here to make a prediction.... burned/holed piston, or a collapsed ring land. Onwards, let's see how wrong I could be! EDIT: 31:27 CALLED IT! ED ED: How? You showed it... oil out the exhaust, no clackiness when you turned it over, lack of flakes but metal present, metal appeared more granular or globular, and the engine apparently ran poorly enough to warrant replacing. Blowby would have been horrid, smoked like a chimney, lankey idle, oil smelling of fuel, etc.

I like how the stampings on the heads show not only the engine size and side, it indicates it is for a Rear Wheel Drive also. Makes me wonder what the difference is.

On a transverse install the front head has direct air flow so the cooling passages are different front to rear.
