Paul, this dominant eye thing is a revelation. I've always been completely right-sided in everything (apart from politics) but now after doing your test, I find out I have a dominant left-eye. Absolute game changer this!

Getting back into playing after years and this video made me realize I'm left eye dominant thanks! I am right handed and used to be right eye dominant but due to having shingles in my right eye it permanently messed it up leaving my left eye to see better. Keep the vids coming

The first darts video to mention the "dominant eye". Most of the videos explain how to throw etc, but nobody talks about it, first you have to figure out which is the dominant eye and then about the throwing style. I once learned which my dominant eye is in an archery course. Great video.

mind blown. so weird, earlier today i found drawing the dart back to my left side was working well, but after a few darts i though no that feels weird just leave it, went back to normal. then i saw this video that was in my watch later, and I find out i'm left eye dominant! (right handed) i'll be trying a taylor esque throw tomorrow!

@@ponemark ha still chopping and changing technique a lot. Though strangely I did throw 9-12 great darts in a row today (including a 180) standing off to the left and keeping my arm more over the right side of my face/shoulder. At the time I thought that might be helping my left eye see the target clearer. (even if the darts not coming back to my left eye) I'm quite superstitious, so the fact you asked me that means I'll stick with that throw tomorrow!

I’ve started working for a new employer and a few co workers and I play darts (on a cheap board and with cheap tattered darts) during lunch break. None of us consistently good always making for close games. Just recently picked up a nice board for the house and a nice set of darts. Other good way of checking eye dominance. Put your hands out toward your bulls eye or some object in your home. Make a triangle with your thumbs touching as the base and forefingers touching up top. Center the object or bullseye in those hands. While holding them in a triangle, bring your hands back to your face while keeping the image in the center. You should come back to your dominant eye. However, if you do come back to an eye, which you can do consciously, and you see a hand cross across the object then that eye is not your dominant. For your dominant you should be able to bring the triangle back to that eye with no obscuring of the object along the way.

You emphasized keeping your elbow motionless (i.e. no upward motion). But in your next video, as well as your vid with other pros, the elbow clearly moves up as the arm extends on every throw. Can you clarify by what you mean by keeping your elbow still. It seems there comes a point in the throw where the elbow is expected to move up?

Depending on what kind of grip you use u can make use of one eye but it doesn't matter that much. You can also throw good just with muscle memory as long as you watch the board.

This is a most important video. I have found I am left eye dominant but right-handed. It is a bit awkward moving your right arm across the body to aim from the left eye. Phil Taylor's style is something I must understand more.

Learning to shoot pistol was hard for me. I'm right handed, but left eye dominant. My coach put me in an eye patch on my left eye until I got muscle memory bringing the pistol to my right eye. Now, I don't even think about it. Maybe a technique darters could use as well.

This has been an eye-opener, pun intended. I've recently started throwing darts casually and was asked "do you aim with your dart", I found this unusual and said 'not really, I just feel it out'.I then tried "aiming" with my dart but was even more inconsistent than normal - turns out I'm left eye dominent with a right handed throw - I pretty much "feel out" all my shots. At least I have a bit of reasoning now.

when you say put the dart in front of your eye do you mean your right eye? when i placed the dart in front of my right eye, and closed my right eye, the dart did not move. however when i placed the dart in front of my right eye and closed my left eye, the dart moved substantially to the left and upwards. DOES THAT MEAN IM LEFT EYE DOMINANT?????

If I centre the dart between my eyes, it moves equally, if I have it above my right it moves when I shut my left, and vice versa. Doesn’t seem like the best test. Maybe I just don’t have a dominant eye.

Few years back i had weird problem with my throwing, i didn't understand it. While i was focusing on aiming i had many misses to 12 and 18, sometimes more than 60% of throws. But while i was throwing without aiming i could hit 20's with 60-70% accuracy. It was really confusing for me, because i really didnt want to throw only basing on muscle memory and 'feeling'. This was cause that i resigned from dart. Today i wanted to throw a little bit, just for fun, and also i watched few yt videos hopefully that i finally find out what was the cause of my misses... And i've just found out that my right eye is dominant but i was aiming with my left eye... ( i'm right handed) Its weird because only with dart im aiming with my left eye... Other methods points that my right eye is dominant. With closed left eye i feel comfortable with aiming and throwing, will se if i can learn to aim with right eye.

Im kinda lost. I'm right handed but left eye dominant, so should be doing something slightly different? People mess with me all the time about how I do it but I find that I throw way better darts by positioning my arm slightly elevated and more toward center or my left. Ive tried to copy the way I see other people position/aim but it seems like my darts always fly/ land way off and I could just as well not aim at all.

If I lift more to the left then my left eye stays engaged, if I lift more to the right then my right eye locks in. So , I tried the eye test ,and the dart doesn’t move for either eye whenever I hold it up. Like if it’s in front of my right eye and I close it , it doesn’t move, but if I hold it above my left eye(I’m ambidextrous), and close my left eye, it also doesn’t move, same if I open or close my right eye while it’s in front of my left eye, and same with holding it right hand in front of right eye, and closing and opening left eye, still doesn’t move. Never tried this back in the day, but just havr and my dart moves about an inch left when i close my left eye, and about an inch right if i close my right?..... Dunno what to do..

I've been bringing my hand back in front of my dominant eye to sight the dart, but then my hand is blocking my view of the board. If I close my other eye I can't see the board. Is this wrong? Should I move my hand slightly below or to the side of my dominant eye? Thanks

You do get more used to it with practice, try developing a rhythm you won't even notice your hand anymore. You can also buy sight aids that attach to your dart although I can not vouch for there efficacy. I am left eye dominant but right handed so I bring the dart from my left peripheral vision in the first place. Not bring it upto my centre then left, that helped alleviate my blocking sensation but its kinda more in your head you release that dart at correct point it goes where you want.

the better way is to make a circle with ur thumb and index finger and then aim it at something until u see it in the middle of the circle. now close ur right eye. if the object stays in the middle of the circle, ur left eye dominant...and vice versa

If you hold the dart RIGHT in front of your eye of course its going to move/jump like crazy, you should do this but with your arms outstretched to find your dominant eye or google it but this method is skewing the results by having it so damn close to ONE eye. Everyone is going to think they're right eye dominant if they do it this way.

lol! Peter Wright doesn't overthink at all does he? Guess he changed darts like underwear just for sh*ts and giggles then huh? I know what you're trying to say, but to a degree EVERY player thinks! How do you think they practice with a routine by just walking up and throwing with no discipline, or effort? Muscle memory, and trying to "feel" the dart to the target is much more beneficial than trying to force it by aiming, and throwing until your arm falls off. I think that's more or less what you were implying right?

This doesn't work for me and actually this is quite weird: Nothing moves when I close one eye at a time slowly but when I hit a certain "shutter speed" we'll call it it starts to move equally back amd forth. Further, when I do it fast I can see the tiny reflection of my kitchen light change angles but when I do it slowly there it absolutely no movement whatsoever. This kind of makes sense because I used to play with one eye closed but I do so much better with both eyes open (idk if other people do this or not but it works for me)

Eye dominance doesn't matter. Just look at the target and throw your darts from the side of your eye. So you can see your target with both eyes. That is much better than sticking your dart in front of one eye and then you can't see the target with it. Because you don't aim your darts you just throw them and you've got a much bigger chance of hitting your target when you look at it with both of your eyes.

Phil Taylor and Gary Anderson beg to differ. Phil literally pulled his arm across to the left side of his face to get the dart in line with his offset dominant eye. Players like MVG and Rob Cross seem to be center eyed as they throw from a central position in front of their face, but almost all top players line their sight up with the dart and board. If you've ever played snooker you'd know they do it too. In fact, nearly all elite snooker players are center eyed, so you'll see them cueing directly underneath the middle of their chin. The rare one's who aren't will cue to either side depending on which eye is dominant. It's important for aiming.

@@futurez12 Having worked in visual sciences, I studied this for years, mostly pertaining to snooker. In fact, most right-handed snooker players place the cue under the right eye, and left-handers under the left eye. Nevertheless, independent of handedness, eye dominance is 80 % right, 20 % left. According to research, sighting is task dependent, and an individual uses a different eye for sighting in different disciplines and even in the same discipline after using a different hand for a sufficiently long time. Eye dominance is more about the conscious, so called "ventral" stream of visual processing. Motor control is based relatively more on less conscious "dorsal" visual system. However, all this is individual, and strong eye dominance or some x factor can override this. Sight-right type of finding the line of aim OTOH is more about conscious, dominant eye driven. So, for that you may benefit finding your dominant eye. But even for that it is probably not necessary, because vision is cyclopic, you oniy see one visual field, not one for each eye. I'd suggest forgetting about which eye you use. Just find a system for finding the line of aim and when you're sighting in your stance, just trust your sensory and motor systems :)

I'm certainly no professional but I play to a decent standard. My advice, as a right hand/left eye dominant, would be don't worry about it too much and stick with what feels comfortable and natural. I line everything up through my right side and it feels much better than throwing across from my left. I've tried throwing from my left eye but I hate how my hand blocks the board and how harder it feels to keep my elbow still.

Hm... not sure that trick really determines your eye dominance. Doing that with your left hand (if you're right handed yields the same result but with the opposite eye). According to this test both my eyes are dominant since it moves in both instances for my left and right... Really it changes simply based on where you have the dart in relation to your eyes (right eye focused, left eye focused, middle )

I can't get enough power in my throw unless I start my hand beside my face instead of in front of my eye. As my hand comes forward it does come in front of my eye but I guess that means my action is slightly curved. Any tips to fix this?

@ATOWN135 I find my biggest problem is keeping the darts straight North to South. I'm hitting as many treble 1s and treble 5s as single 20. I like to practise on D11 to try to improve this. Last night I threw approx 100 darts at it and hit it 6 times. My east to west judgement of required speed is excellent so its very frustrating not being able to get the alignment sorted. The funny thing is when I want to hit T19 I can't seem to come out of the straight line and hit the 3 segment 90% of the time.

I have a real issue with the follow through, I just don’t find it natural to follow through anywhere as near as much as pros say u should. The dart keeps going to the right when I’m really trying to follow through
