24:40 Well the idea of Pokemon largely comes from Ultraseven. Ultraseven's alter ego, Dan Moroboshi, carried around five friendly giant monsters in capsules he carried with him. He'd throw the capsules releasing the creature to help him fight as he gave commands. Sound familiar?

It's nifty seeing how much the anime actually took from the game. If you just played the English version you'd think they made most of the lore and world up. But, nope, it was in the game. Just why does the localization have a hard-on for removing all the flavor text? Especially when the next second they're "spicing up" the dialogue.

oh at 11:50 I just noticed, see, I always thought it was a standard line that you received an item, but this implies that each time you get an item in a special way or other they handcrafted the dialogue box for that specific situation, that alone adds so much more charm to the game than I ever would've otherwise known.

"bad, bad, bad" ...Why? Just....WHY!?! 生意気 is one of my favorite Japanese words and they turn it into...whatever that was.

I am loving this series, man! I finally caught up with it. Pokémon is one of my favorite series and it’s localization is something I have been interested in for years. At first it was just the anime but then I realized the rabbit hole went much further than that. I didn’t think a video series like this would ever exist but I’m happy it does!

Thanks! It’s always very motivating to hear someone is liking the series! Part of why I started making these videos is because, as far as I know, no one really makes videos about localization in this way and I wanted to watch this kind of content so it’s nice to see there are others out there like me.

Love to see you continuing this series. Do you already have a game in mind for the next localized journey once you are done with Pokemon Red? 16:45 That really caught me off guard 草 26:15 This is always really infuriating. It's the same with Sony constantly censoring anime-style games while full on sex scenes in TLOU are okay. Or how for the PS release the blood in DDLC got censored from red to black... Remind me again how many far more brutal games with much more realistic depiction of blood are completely uncensored on PS? Either way, keep up the great work.

Thanks! I’m thinking about doing 2 different games simultaneously, one long like Pokémon Red and one short. My hope is that if some people don’t like what I pick for one they’ll at least be able to enjoy the other. For the long one I was thinking maybe one of the xenoblade games seeing as I’ve mentioned those a few times but nothing’s set in stone yet.

@@Ackermin If you're going to pick a xeno game, please don't go with XB3, that game's jp script is very safe and boring, you'll end up just talking about the stupid liberties the localizers took with the text.

I’m leaning towards 2 right now because that seems to be the most controversial and the one I’m most familiar with.

@@Ackermin Sounds like plan. I always thought about starting Xenoblade but now that I'm familiar with all these localization issues I'll gladly put it off until my Japanese is at a sufficient level. That being said, I'll still watch it if you decide to go with Xenoblade. And if you decide to do two games at once that's even better. Just don't burn yourself out 👍

I've binged these Localisation videos the past few days. I'm really inspired to practice Japanese so I can enjoy games as intended. Keep up the grind and looking forward to Part 9.

It’s interesting that based on a couple of the changes to Saffron, that someone who watched the anime as a kid can fill in the missing context but otherwise it would be very bland. Especially with the copycat girl and the gym being a training place for psychics.

True, it’s much harder to remove content that’s shown on screen than it is to remove a few words every now and then.

So far im fully convinced back then they did not a translator that knew full japanese well enough, considering so many rewritten parts.
@FourteenthAngel

While that would still be pretty egregious on it own. Its actually because the translator felt like it pretty much.

Finally caught up with your localization content! That this channel has such a small following feels so wrong to me. But you've easily gotten a subscription out of me lol. It's great to see someone giving heavy handed localization the criticism it rightfully deserves. If you want to be a game writer, then apply for that job. On a side note, do you have any tips to stay motivated learning Japanese? I tend to be very inconsistent with practice.

Thanks! I’m always glad to hear someone is enjoying the localization videos. When it comes to Japanese practice my number one tip would definitely be to involve something you enjoy like video games or anime in your studies in some way. Personally I used to try to work my way through a Japanese game I liked with no English text or read a raw manga that was somewhere close to my current Japanese level. Even if you’re not at a stage where you feel ready to dive into a full Japanese piece of media I’d say just give it a shot every now and then and see how you do. It’s a good way to recognize your incremental improvement which was always motivating for me and it’s something you enjoy so it’ll be easier to pick back up than more traditional forms of study. Sorry if you’ve already tried that lol. Other than that, if you haven’t already, consider trying a learning tool like wanikani or anki. I used wanikani for years and it definitely helped me stay motivated on a more daily basis.

Lmao this guy does _not_ understand how this text limitation thing works 😂 You really think that it's just all one large set? They're divided into smaller sets. Take the "i lost my concentration". The additional dialogue was added because it could fit into the character limit of that specific part. Elsewhere, it is different. And you still have zero adequate criticisms. You're just moaning about minor, insignificant additions of dialogue that change literally nothing. And you're forcing your nonsensical interpretations.

Dunno, I like Doduo. The whole dodo thing isn't immediately obvious anymore but Doduo does make more sense once you know about the original.. which.. nobody would've known back then so okay yeah, I get it. Though to be perfectly honest the line always reminded me of Kiwi birds instead of Dodos, especially Doduo.

6:13 That's not how it works. There was already space in the text slot for that text. They can't add more. It's all done beforehand. 14:30 what? This is the ultimate nitpick. You're seriously complaining about it adding "blocks our path" and removing that it's sleeping "peacefully"? As for the whole grumpy rage thing, it's pretty obvious that in Japanese, Snorlax isn't in the most happy state. Just because it isn't stated, doesn't mean it isn't implied. You seem to be able to pick up so many obscure meanings in the Japanese, how were you unable to do so here? 16:15 That's again due to text space limits. You just don't wish to admit that's a central reason for this information being left out. 16:52 That's literally the English cultural equivalent. People asking "what do you want" usually say that as a result of being provoked in some way in the first place. You're deliberately ignoring these things lmao. 18:44 Again?! Are you just trying your hardest to mess up the interpretation of the english? How exactly did you interpret that line lmao. It's pretty clearly implying a very similar thing to the Japanese line.
